Before You Visit Morocco, Read The Boy from Fez: Discovering a Civilization from Within
For centuries, Morocco has been visited, painted, photographed, studied, and described by people from around the world. Yet I have often wondered: how frequently have we listened to Morocco telling its own story?
I was born in Fez, among craftsmen, storytellers, musicians, grandmothers, and ordinary people whose extraordinary wisdom shaped my childhood.
Many years later, after studying anthropology and travelling across the world, I realized that my first and greatest classroom had been the streets, homes, and orchards of my own city.
That realization inspired me to write The Boy from Fez.
This book is not simply a memoir of my childhood. It is an invitation to discover Moroccan civilization from within, through the lives of the people who made it what it is.
I wrote it for travellers who wish to understand Morocco before visiting, for Moroccans who wish to reconnect with their cultural inheritance, and for readers everywhere who recognize that our human experiences connect us across borders.
Because I believe something deeply:
Everyone has a Fez of their own.
My Fez may be different from yours, but somewhere in our childhood memories, our families, our friendships, and the places we call home, we may discover how much humanity we share.
Today, I invite you to read my new reflection:
The Boy from Fez: Morocco, Told from Within
