About Croatia

Croatia: Where the Adriatic Meets History

Croatia is a country shaped by the Adriatic. Along its long coastline, islands, stone towns and historic ports tell stories of maritime trade and Mediterranean exchange, while inland landscapes reveal another Croatia of mountains, forests, villages and Central European influences. Geography has given this relatively small country a remarkable cultural diversity.

Dubrovnik is perhaps Croatia's most celebrated historic city, but its beauty becomes more meaningful when we understand the independent maritime republic that once flourished behind its walls. Farther north, Split grew around the extraordinary palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, where ancient architecture gradually became part of a living medieval and modern city.

Throughout the country, Roman, Slavic, Venetian, Austro-Hungarian and broader Balkan influences have left their traces. Churches, fortifications, monasteries, town squares, markets and traditional architecture reveal centuries of movement between the Mediterranean world and the European interior.

Croatia's culture also lives beyond its monuments. Traditional klapa singing, regional cuisine, fishing communities, vineyards, olive groves and local festivals reveal relationships between landscape, family and memory that continue into the present. On the islands and along the coast, the sea remains inseparable from everyday identity.

Nature provides another way to experience the country. Plitvice Lakes, mountain landscapes, islands and coastal trails invite walking and active exploration, allowing travellers to move beyond historic centres and discover the extraordinary geography that helped shape Croatian life.

Sarah Tours explores Croatia through small-group and private journeys combining history, culture, landscapes and human encounter. Our itineraries can include historic cities, islands, food, walking, spiritual heritage and quieter communities beyond the most travelled routes.

Croatia is beautiful at first sight. But travel becomes more rewarding when we look beyond the beauty and begin to understand the histories, people and cultures that gave the landscape its meaning.
