Morocco Imperial Cities Tour

Upon arrival at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Sarah Tours representative and meet your tour leader before beginning the journey to Rabat, Morocco's present-day capital and the first of the country's historic Imperial Cities on your journey.

Depending on your arrival time, begin exploring Rabat with your local guide. Unlike the intensity of Fez or Marrakech that awaits later in the journey, Rabat introduces Morocco at a gentler rhythm, bringing together royal history, Andalusian heritage, traditional neighborhoods, gardens, and the life of a modern capital.

Explore landmarks such as the Kasbah of the Oudayas, with its Andalusian character and views toward the Bou Regreg River and Atlantic Ocean, the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and, as time permits, Rabat's historic medina and Mellah.

This first afternoon is deliberately unhurried, allowing time to settle into Morocco, meet your fellow travelers, and begin understanding the historical and cultural landscape that will unfold over the coming days.

Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight in Rabat.

After breakfast, leave Rabat and travel east toward Meknes, one of Morocco's four historic Imperial Cities. Closely associated with Sultan Moulay Ismail, Meknes offers a different expression of royal Morocco, with monumental gates, ramparts, granaries, historic neighborhoods, and the architectural legacy of a ruler who transformed the city into an imperial capital.

Continue through the fertile countryside to Volubilis, the UNESCO-listed archaeological site that preserves some of the finest Roman remains in North Africa. Walk among its ancient streets, mosaics, columns, houses, and public buildings while considering an important part of Morocco's history: long before the arrival of Islam, this region already stood at the meeting point of indigenous Amazigh, Mediterranean, and Roman worlds.

Nearby rises the whitewashed hill town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, named for Moulay Idriss I, whose arrival in the late eighth century became a defining chapter in the formation of Islamic Morocco. The town remains an important place of pilgrimage and spiritual significance, gathered around the sanctuary of Moulay Idriss and overlooking the surrounding countryside.

From Moulay Idriss, continue toward Fez, founded by the Idrisids and destined to become one of the great intellectual, spiritual, commercial, and cultural centers of Morocco and the wider Islamic world.

Before settling into your hotel, time permitting, pause at one of the panoramic viewpoints overlooking the ancient medina. From above, Fez appears almost contained within its walls; tomorrow, you will enter those walls on foot and discover the remarkably different world within.

Begin your day with a panoramic introduction to Fez, Morocco's oldest Imperial City and one of the great historic cities of the Islamic world. From the surrounding heights, see the ancient medina enclosed within its walls before descending to explore it on foot.

Visit the Royal Palace gates and the Mellah, Fez's historic Jewish quarter, where architecture, balconies, synagogues, cemeteries, and neighborhood history reveal an important chapter in Morocco's Jewish heritage and the diverse communities that have shaped the city.

Then enter Fez el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed old city. Here, exploring Fez becomes less about following a list of monuments and more about understanding how a medieval city continues to function as a living urban community. Walk through narrow lanes and market streets where homes, mosques, fountains, bakeries, workshops, schools, shrines, food stalls, and neighborhood life remain interwoven.

Along the way, visit some of Fez's important historic and cultural landmarks, including the beautifully decorated Al Attarine Madrasa, Seffarine Square, where metalworkers continue a centuries-old craft tradition, and the surroundings of Al Qarawiyyin, founded in the ninth century and long associated with scholarship, religious learning, and the intellectual life of Fez.

Spend time in the artisan quarters, where crafts such as leatherwork, metalwork, woodcarving, weaving, embroidery, and zellij tilework remain part of the city's living economy. Your local guide will help interpret not only what you see, but how the medina developed around relationships between neighborhoods, trades, religion, water, commerce, education, and community life.

Pause for lunch in the medina before continuing your exploration during the afternoon, with time for the souks, workshops, and discoveries that naturally occur while walking through Fez.

After breakfast, leave Fez and travel south toward Marrakech, crossing a changing landscape that reveals another side of Morocco beyond its historic cities.

The journey begins through the Middle Atlas, passing through Ifrane and the surrounding mountain country before continuing toward El Hajeb. Along the way, your tour leader will introduce the geography, agriculture, rural communities, and changing landscapes of the region, helping you understand how climate and altitude have shaped different ways of life across Morocco.

This journey also offers an opportunity to observe the contrast between the urban culture of Fez and the smaller towns, agricultural areas, and predominantly Amazigh regions of the Middle Atlas. Rather than simply passing through the countryside, we use the road to better understand the remarkable geographical and cultural diversity contained within Morocco.

Pause for lunch along the way before joining the highway toward Marrakech. As the journey continues south, the landscape gradually changes again, announcing the transition toward the warmer plains surrounding the city.

Arrive in Marrakech, historically known as Marrakech al-Hamra — Marrakech the Red — whose walls, architecture, gardens, markets, and public life offer a striking contrast to the world you have just experienced in Fez.

After breakfast, set out with your local guide to explore the historic heart of Marrakech, founded in the eleventh century and one of Morocco's four Imperial Cities. Marrakech developed at the meeting point of the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara caravan routes, and the plains of southern Morocco, becoming an important center of political power, commerce, craftsmanship, and culture.

Begin with the Koutoubia Mosque and Minaret, one of the great landmarks of Marrakech and an important expression of Almohad architecture. Its architectural language crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and can be seen in monuments of Andalusia, including the Giralda in Seville — a reminder that the histories of Morocco and southern Spain cannot always be understood separately.

Continue to the Saadian Tombs, the beautifully decorated royal necropolis of the Saadian dynasty, and the Bahia Palace, where courtyards, gardens, carved cedar, painted ceilings, stucco, and zellij demonstrate how architecture, craftsmanship, light, water, and privacy came together within the Moroccan palace tradition.

Then enter the medina and souks of Marrakech. Walk through market streets and artisan quarters where textiles, leather, metalwork, spices, woodwork, clothing, food, and everyday commerce create a constantly changing rhythm. Your guide will help distinguish between what was created for visitors and the crafts, trades, and neighborhood traditions that remain part of the living city.

Pause for lunch before continuing through the medina during the afternoon, allowing time not only for historic sites but also for the encounters and observations that make walking through Marrakech part of the experience.

Toward evening, arrive at Jemaa el-Fna, when the character of the square begins to change. Food stalls appear, musicians and performers gather, and residents and visitors converge in a public space that has served Marrakech in many different ways across the centuries.

Conclude the evening with dinner at a Moroccan restaurant accompanied by local entertainment before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, continue your exploration of Marrakech with a day devoted to another side of the city — its gardens, relationship with water, and life beyond the historic medina.

Begin at the Menara Gardens, where a large reservoir, orchards, pavilion, and distant views of the Atlas Mountains reveal something fundamental about Marrakech: behind the beauty of its gardens lies an ingenious relationship with water. For centuries, irrigation systems made it possible to sustain orchards, gardens, agriculture, and urban life within an otherwise dry landscape.

Continue to one of Marrakech's celebrated botanical gardens, where plants, architecture, shade, and water provide another expression of the garden tradition that has long been important to the city's identity.

Visit the Museum of Water, where the story expands beyond Marrakech to explore Morocco's traditional knowledge of collecting, managing, distributing, and conserving water. Wells, irrigation channels, communal systems, and agricultural practices remind us that water in Morocco has never been merely a resource; it has helped shape settlement, cooperation, architecture, and ways of life.

Later, leave the old city for Gueliz, developed beyond the medina walls during the twentieth century. Its broad avenues, cafés, galleries, shops, and contemporary neighborhoods offer a striking contrast to the historic city explored the previous day and reveal another chapter in the continuing evolution of Marrakech.

Return to your hotel for your final evening in Marrakech, with dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, depart Marrakech for Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, traveling across the plains of central Morocco for your international flight home.
