Morocco Sahara Camel Trekking

Welcome to Morocco.

Upon arrival at Casablanca Airport, you will be met by your guide and begin the journey to Fez, where our Sahara expedition begins.

Today is deliberately unhurried. After the long journey to Morocco, there is no need to rush immediately into sightseeing. Settle into your accommodation, rest, and allow yourself time to arrive—not only in another country, but in another rhythm.

Fez is an appropriate place from which to begin a journey toward the Sahara. For centuries, the city was connected to a much wider world through trade, scholarship, pilgrimage, and the movement of people across North and West Africa. Goods, ideas, stories, music, and knowledge travelled along routes that reached far beyond the city walls.

Over the coming days, we will gradually follow the landscape south—from Fez across the Middle Atlas, through mountain communities and the great palm valleys, until paved roads give way to desert tracks and eventually to the open Sahara.

For now, we simply arrive.

In the evening, we gather for dinner and meet the people with whom we will share the journey. It is an opportunity to talk about the expedition ahead, ask questions, and begin getting acquainted.

Tomorrow, before travelling south, we enter the medina of Fez and discover something of the world from which the old caravan roads once departed.

This morning we step into the medina of Fez, not simply to visit an old city, but to understand something of the world from which our journey toward the Sahara begins.

For centuries, Fez stood within networks of trade, scholarship, pilgrimage, craftsmanship, and human movement that connected Morocco with lands far beyond the Atlas Mountains. What arrived with the caravans was not limited to merchandise. People travelled with languages, music, beliefs, techniques, stories, and ideas. The desert separated worlds, but it also connected them.

We explore Fez on foot, as the city has always been explored.

Through its narrow streets and marketplaces, we encounter craftsmen still working in small workshops, food sellers, fountains, funduqs, mosques, madrasas, and neighborhoods where everyday life continues within an urban fabric shaped over many centuries. Rather than rushing from monument to monument, we allow the medina to reveal itself through the relationships between people, water, faith, commerce, architecture, and craft.

Our guide will introduce some of Fez's important historical sites, but equally important will be what happens between them: a craftsman at his bench, bread disappearing into a neighborhood oven, the sound of metal being worked, the smell of cedar or spices, or a conversation that could never have appeared on an itinerary.

We stop for lunch in the medina and continue our exploration during the afternoon, leaving time for those who wish to visit workshops or browse the souks.

By the end of the day, the Sahara may still seem far away. Yet traces of the wider African world are already around us.

Tomorrow morning we leave Fez and travel south. The streets of the medina will give way to cedar forests, mountain roads, high plateaus and eventually the palm groves of the Ziz.

The caravan journey is about to become a landscape.

Today we leave Fez and turn south.

Almost immediately, Morocco begins to change around us. The cultivated plains gradually rise toward the Middle Atlas, where cedar forests, mountain pastures and small towns replace the dense urban world we left behind in Fez.

We travel through Ifrane and continue toward Azrou, an old mountain market town where routes from different parts of the Middle Atlas have long converged. Around us is the country of Amazigh communities whose relationship with these mountains, forests, pastures and seasonal movements reaches back generations.

Beyond Azrou, the landscape opens.

Forests become thinner, settlements more scattered, and the road climbs across the high plateaus toward Midelt, lying between the Middle and High Atlas ranges. We stop along the way and take lunch around Midelt before continuing south.

From here, the journey begins to reveal why geography has always determined movement through Morocco.

We cross the High Atlas through the upper Ziz country and gradually descend toward the great oasis system of the south. After hours of stone, mountain and increasingly arid land, the first dense stands of date palms appear below us.

This is the Ziz Valley.

Water has made a long green corridor through an otherwise dry landscape. Villages, fields and palm groves follow its course, reminding us that in the pre-Saharan world, settlement is rarely accidental. Where there is water, there can be cultivation. Where there is cultivation, communities grow. And where people gather, routes of exchange begin to meet.

We continue through the oasis country toward Erfoud and then Merzouga. The mountains that accompanied us for much of the day gradually recede, the vegetation becomes sparse, and the horizon grows wider.

Then the dunes appear.

At Merzouga we leave our vehicle and meet the desert team who will accompany us into the Sahara. Camels, camp equipment and supplies are prepared, and we make our first short journey away from the road toward our camp among the dunes.

Tonight is our first night in the desert.

Dinner is prepared in camp. As the lights of the settlements disappear behind us, there is little left between us and the night sky.

Tomorrow, we leave the road behind.

We wake this morning in the Sahara.

After breakfast, our camp is packed and the caravan begins to move. From this point, the road becomes less important. We travel across the desert slowly, sometimes riding, sometimes walking beside our camels, following tracks known to the people who have crossed this country for generations.

There is no need to remain on camelback all day. The camel is our companion and means of transport, not a test of endurance. Walk when you wish, ride when you wish, and allow your body gradually to find the rhythm of the caravan.

The Sahara begins to look different when crossed at this pace.

What seemed empty from a distance slowly reveals signs of life: a well, a patch of vegetation, animal tracks in the sand, a distant dwelling, a shepherd with his animals, or the faint line of a path almost invisible to an unfamiliar eye. Our desert guides help us read these signs and understand how people orient themselves in a landscape without road signs or marked trails.

During the hottest part of the day, we stop. The camels rest, shade is found where possible, and our cook prepares lunch. There is time for tea, conversation and stillness before the caravan moves again.

Our journey brings us toward Khamliya, a Saharan village known particularly for its Gnawa musical heritage. Here the human story of the Sahara becomes more visible. The desert was never an empty barrier at the edge of Morocco. For centuries it was crossed by people carrying goods, languages, beliefs, music, memories and traditions between communities north and south of it.

We spend time in and around the village, meeting people naturally and learning something of the life and musical traditions that have taken root here. We come as guests, not as spectators. When conversation happens, we make time for it. When music is shared, we listen.

Later, we return to the open country and establish our camp for the night.

As evening approaches, the practical rituals of desert life begin: the animals are settled, tents are raised, water is carefully used, and our cook prepares dinner. These ordinary acts are part of the expedition. In the wilderness, a camp is not simply where we sleep. For one night, it becomes our home.

After dinner there is nowhere we need to go.

The desert has become our road, our landscape, and our address.

Tomorrow, we travel deeper.

Morning comes quietly in the desert.

After breakfast, our camp is dismantled, the camels are loaded, and we continue south toward Taous. By now the rhythm of the caravan is becoming familiar. We walk for a while, ride for a while, stop for tea, and allow the conditions of the desert rather than the clock to shape our day.

Today we move away from the great dunes into another face of the Sahara.

The landscape becomes more open and austere. Sand gives way at times to stone, gravel plains, dry riverbeds and low ridges. To an unfamiliar eye, there may appear to be very little here. Our guides see something different. They recognize tracks, grazing areas, wells, old routes and subtle changes in the land that reveal where water may once have flowed and where people and animals can still survive.

This is part of learning to travel through the Sahara: slowly, attentively, and with respect for what the landscape can provide.

Around midday we stop and establish shade for lunch. Our cook prepares the meal while the caravan rests. There is no restaurant to reach and no sightseeing appointment waiting for us. The pause belongs to the journey itself.

Later we continue toward Taous.

The appearance of an oasis after hours of travelling through dry country is never insignificant. A few palms, cultivated plots, a well or the presence of animals tell a larger story. In the Sahara, water does more than quench thirst. It determines where people can live, where animals can be watered, where food can grow and where travelers have been able to stop before continuing their journeys.

At Taous we enter that human landscape.

Depending on local circumstances, there may be opportunities to meet residents, farmers, herders or families living in the area. Such encounters are never staged for us. We stop when we are welcomed, share tea when it is offered, listen, ask questions, and allow conversation to take its own course.

This evening we share a meal with a local family, an opportunity to experience hospitality not as a performance but as one of the enduring languages of desert life. Around the table, stories may travel more easily than we do—stories of the land, family, changing ways of life, beliefs, music, memory and the Sahara itself.

Later, we return to the quiet of the night.

By now we have begun to understand something that cannot easily be learned from a map:

The oasis is not an interruption of the desert.

It is one of the ways human beings learned to live with it.

Tomorrow, our caravan turns again toward the great dunes of Erg Chebbi.

By now, the caravan has found its rhythm.

We leave Taous after breakfast and turn north toward Erg Chebbi, travelling across open desert country where distances are difficult to judge and landmarks can seem deceptively close.

Today belongs to the immensity of the Sahara.

Our route carries us across changing terrain—stony plains, dry wadis, low ridges and stretches of sand. There may be no single trail beneath us. Instead, our desert guides read the country: the shape of the land, familiar horizons, tracks left by animals and people, the position of the sun, and knowledge inherited through years of travelling here.

For those accustomed to roads, signs and maps, this way of moving through a landscape can be a revelation.

The Sahara is not without direction. One simply has to learn another language for finding it.

We travel for several hours before stopping for our midday rest. The camels are unloaded, shade is made, tea is prepared and our cook begins lunch. By now these small rituals have become familiar. What felt unusual only a few days ago has started to become the ordinary rhythm of our travelling household.

If we encounter herders, families or other travelers along the way, we may stop to exchange greetings or share tea when circumstances allow. Nothing is arranged for display. Life in the desert continues whether we are here or not, and our privilege is simply to pass through it respectfully.

During the afternoon, something begins to change on the horizon.

Erg Chebbi appears again.

After the stone plains and open country through which we have travelled, the great dunes rise almost unexpectedly from the landscape. We approach them slowly, understanding them differently now from when we first saw them several days ago.

Then, they were the Sahara.

Now we know they are only one of its many faces.

We reach our private camp among the dunes in the late afternoon. The camels are unloaded for the final time, and there is time to walk, climb a nearby dune, or simply sit and watch the light move across the sand.

Tonight is our last night in the wilderness.

Our desert team prepares dinner, and we gather together as we have done each evening. There may be music and conversation, but there is also time for silence.

Tomorrow we will return to vehicles, paved roads, hotels and schedules.

Tonight, there is only the camp, the dunes and the sky.

And perhaps the realization that we did not come to conquer the Sahara.

We came to learn how to move through it.

This morning, we wake for the last time among the dunes.

Breakfast is prepared in camp, the equipment is packed, and we say goodbye to the desert team and the camels that have accompanied us through the Sahara.

The change is immediate.

After days measured by footsteps, camel tracks, meals and the movement of the sun, we return to our vehicles and paved roads. Distances that took hours to cross in the caravan now disappear quickly behind us.

We travel west toward Tinghir, watching the open desert gradually give way to another landscape.

And once again, water changes everything.

At Todra, a river has carved its passage through immense walls of rock, creating not only one of Morocco's most dramatic geological formations but also a corridor of life. Palms, cultivated fields and settlements follow the water through country that would otherwise support little agriculture.

We take time to walk and explore rather than simply stopping for a photograph. After several days in the open Sahara, the coolness of the gorge, the sound of running water and the sudden abundance of vegetation can feel almost extravagant.

From Todra we continue toward the Dades Valley.

Here, the relationship between people and landscape becomes visible in another form. Villages and old kasbahs rise from the earth from which they were built. Fields occupy the cultivable ground beside the river. Roads follow passages that geology has allowed. Human settlement seems to negotiate constantly with mountain, stone and water.

We continue through Boumalene Dades and the country around Kalaa M'Gouna, where cultivated valleys support roses, fruit trees and small farms. After the austerity of the Sahara, these pockets of fertility remind us again that southern Morocco has always depended upon a delicate conversation with water.

Throughout the day, we stop when the landscape, a village, a market or an encounter invites us to do so. We are still travelling in the spirit of the expedition. The camels may be behind us, but we have not returned to travelling by checklist.

By late afternoon, we continue toward Ouarzazate.

Tonight we return to the comforts of a hotel: a private room, a shower, perhaps clothes without desert dust. We gather for dinner and look back on the country we have crossed—from the streets of Fez through cedar forests and mountain passes, along the Ziz, into the Sahara, through its oases and open wilderness, and now into the river valleys of the south.

Tomorrow we leave Morocco's interior and begin our journeys home.

But something has changed.

The map we carried when we arrived showed us roads, towns and distances.

The journey has shown us what lies between them.

After breakfast, we transfer to Ouarzazate Airport for your onward flight to Casablanca and your continuing journey.

There are no more tracks to follow today, no camels to saddle and no camp to dismantle.

Over the past week, we have travelled from the medina of Fez across the Atlas Mountains, followed water into the oasis country of the south, and left the paved road to move through the Sahara at the pace of a caravan.

We have slept beneath the desert sky, shared meals along the way, passed through villages and oases, and discovered that what first appeared to be an empty landscape is filled with relationships—between water and settlement, movement and survival, people and place.

We leave the Sahara behind, but perhaps not entirely.

For a few days, we learned to travel differently: to move slowly, to notice what lies between destinations, to accept what the day brings, and to understand that sometimes the journey itself is the place we came to see.
