Morocco Hinterland Expedition

Welcome to Morocco.

There could hardly be a more appropriate place to begin our expedition than Tangier, a city that has spent much of its history looking in several directions at once. Here, at the meeting of the Mediterranean and Atlantic and within sight of Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco has long stood in conversation with the world beyond its shores.

After meeting your guide and settling into the hotel, we begin gently. Today is less about covering ground than finding our bearings.

We explore Tangier through its Kasbah, the Grand Socco and the old quarters, walking through a city shaped by successive layers of Moroccan, Mediterranean, African and European history. For centuries, merchants, diplomats, pilgrims, migrants, artists and adventurers passed through here, each leaving something behind while Tangier remained unmistakably itself.

But we are also beginning to look beyond the city.

To the south and east rise the green folds of the Rif Mountains. Beyond them lie Chefchaouen, the ancient approaches to Fez, the Atlas ranges, the great oasis valleys and eventually the Sahara. Much farther away, beyond landscapes we cannot yet see, are the Anti-Atlas, the Souss and the Atlantic coast we will meet again near the end of our journey.

For now, there is no need to hurry.

Tangier is our threshold.

We have twenty-two days ahead of us, and Morocco will reveal itself gradually—as every country should.

Today we leave Tangier and begin our journey into the Rif, the great green mountain country of northern Morocco.

Our first encounter is Tetouan, a city whose whitewashed medina carries a strong Andalusian memory. For centuries, people moved across the narrow sea between Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula, carrying with them language, music, architecture, crafts, food and ways of living. The Strait separated two continents, but it never completely separated their people.

From Tetouan, the landscape begins to change.

The Mediterranean world gradually gives way to mountain country. Roads climb and bend through valleys and villages, cultivated slopes appear between the folds of the Rif, and the pace of life begins to follow the geography.

This is our first real encounter with Morocco beyond its great cities.

The Rif has its own rhythms, traditions and relationship with the land. Mountain communities learned to cultivate difficult terrain, use water carefully and build settlements into slopes rather than against them. What may appear remote on a modern map has never been isolated from history; these mountains have long been crossed by traders, pilgrims, farmers and travelers moving between the Mediterranean and Morocco's interior.

By afternoon we reach Chefchaouen, resting beneath the peaks of the western Rif.

Its blue-washed streets have made the town famous, but Chefchaouen is more than its color. Founded in the late fifteenth century, it grew within the movement of people between Andalusia and northern Morocco and still carries something of that inheritance in its houses, crafts, food and intimate medina.

We take time to walk rather than simply visit—to enter the market, follow the narrow streets and allow the mountain town to introduce itself at its own pace.

Yesterday we stood between two seas.

Today the mountains have begun to close around us.

This morning we leave the blue lanes of Chefchaouen and descend from the Rif toward the fertile plains of northern Morocco.

The change is gradual but revealing. Mountain slopes open into agricultural country, and the road begins to follow one of the old corridors through which people, armies, traders, pilgrims and ideas have moved for centuries.

Our first great encounter with Morocco's deeper past is Volubilis.

Its columns, arches, mosaics and foundations are usually described as Roman ruins, but ruins can sometimes make history appear more finished than it really is. Volubilis belonged to a much longer human landscape. The fertile country surrounding it produced grain, olives and other crops, connecting the settlement to Mediterranean trade and to communities that had inhabited this region long before Rome arrived and remained after Roman authority disappeared.

Standing among the stones, we begin to see something that will accompany us throughout this expedition: civilizations change, but geography remains remarkably persuasive.

Nearby, on the slopes of Jebel Zerhoun, lies Moulay Idriss.

Here the story moves into another chapter. Idris I found refuge in this region in the late eighth century and became associated with the beginnings of the Idrisid state. The town that carries his name remains one of Morocco's important spiritual places.

The distance between Volubilis and Moulay Idriss is only a few kilometers.

Historically, however, we have crossed centuries.

And yet perhaps the more interesting story is not the distance between Roman and Islamic Morocco, but the continuity beneath them—the same fertile valleys, the same springs and hills, the same need for security, trade, community and belonging.

We continue toward Fez, where many of these currents will come together.

Founded soon after the arrival of the Idrisids, Fez would grow into something much greater than a political capital. It became a center of scholarship, craftsmanship, commerce and spiritual life, drawing people from Andalusia, North Africa, the Sahara and the wider Islamic world.

We arrive this evening without trying to understand it yet.

Fez deserves more than an arrival.

Today we enter Fez.

Not simply to see its monuments, but to understand something of the civilization that created them and the living city that still surrounds them.

The old medina does not reveal itself easily. Its streets narrow and turn, descend toward the river and climb again, opening unexpectedly into markets, workshops, fountains, mosques, schools and small neighborhood squares. What first appears confusing gradually reveals an order of its own.

Fez was built for walking.

We begin with some of the great institutions that shaped the city: the Bou Inania Medersa, the Qarawiyyin, the Attarine Medersa, the shrine of Moulay Idriss and the Nejjarine quarter. But today they are not boxes to be checked. Each helps us read a different part of the city.

The mosque was not only a place of prayer. Learning grew around it.

The medersa housed students who came in search of knowledge.

The fountain provided water as a public good.

The funduq received merchants, travelers, animals and merchandise.

The souk organized trades according to their needs and relationships.

The hammam served cleanliness, sociability and ritual life.

And behind modest doors, the traditional dar gathered family life inward around its courtyard.

Together they formed something larger than architecture.

They formed a way of living.

As we walk, we encounter another great inheritance of Fez: its artisans. Woodworkers, brass workers, weavers, leather workers, embroiderers, potters and zellij craftsmen preserve knowledge that was traditionally transmitted not through textbooks but from maâlem to apprentice, hand to hand and generation to generation.

Here, knowledge could live in the fingers.

Water, too, quietly shaped Fez. Springs and rivers made settlement possible, supplied homes and fountains, served gardens and workshops and helped sustain the industries upon which the city prospered. Even when we cannot see the water, much of the medina's life was organized around its presence.

By lunchtime, Fez may feel less like a collection of monuments and more like a conversation between people, faith, work, knowledge and place.

We continue through the medina in the afternoon, but without trying to conquer it.

No one conquers Fez in a day.

Perhaps that is part of its gift.

Today we discover that history is still at work.

Today we leave the grandeur of Fez for two smaller places that tell another part of Morocco's story.

Only a short distance away, the landscape begins to change. The great medina gives way to orchards, cultivated fields, villages and the first rising country of the Middle Atlas.

Here, water becomes easier to read.

Sefrou grew around it. Streams descending from the mountains nourished gardens and orchards, supplied the town and helped make this small settlement an important meeting place between different worlds. Mountain people came down with their produce, merchants passed between Fez and the south, and communities of Muslims and Jews lived beside one another within a town whose history was shaped as much by exchange as by isolation.

We walk through the old town and follow something of that memory.

Sefrou's Jewish heritage remains an important part of its story. For centuries, Jewish families participated in its commercial and social life, and the town and surrounding region retain places associated with that long Moroccan Jewish presence.

But Sefrou also introduces us to another Morocco—the agricultural country that supported the great cities.

Fez could not exist by intellect and craftsmanship alone.

Cities must eat.

Their water must come from somewhere.

Their markets depend upon farmers, herders, orchards, villages and roads that bring the countryside through their gates each morning.

After Sefrou, we continue to nearby B'Halil, built into the foothills of the Middle Atlas.

The village is known for dwellings incorporated into natural caves, some of which remained in use across generations. Here architecture begins not with imposing a design upon the landscape, but with adapting human shelter to what the land already provides.

We take time to walk through the village and surrounding countryside, where cultivated slopes, limestone formations and mountain water begin preparing us for the geographical transition ahead.

These are modest places compared with Fez.

That is precisely why they belong to this expedition.

A country cannot be understood only through its capitals and monuments. Sometimes the village explains the city better than the city explains itself.

Late in the day we return to Fez.

Tomorrow we leave it behind and cross the Middle Atlas toward the Sahara.

The mountains ahead will change almost everything: water, vegetation, architecture, agriculture and eventually the way people live.

Today is one of the great geographical days of our expedition.

We leave Fez and begin climbing into the Middle Atlas, and within a remarkably short distance Morocco changes character.

The cultivated plains give way to higher country. Around Ifrane and Azrou, cedar forests, evergreen oak, mountain pastures and flowing water replace the landscapes we have known until now. In winter these mountains may carry deep snow; in spring their streams swell and descend toward the plains below.

The Atlas Mountains are more than Morocco's dramatic backbone.

They are among its great reservoirs of life.

Rain and snow captured at altitude feed rivers, springs, aquifers, forests, orchards, farms and cities far beyond the mountains themselves. Much of the Morocco we have already travelled through would be very different without the water gathered here.

Around Azrou we enter cedar country, where forest and pasture have long supported mountain communities and seasonal movement with livestock. The relationship between people and these uplands is old, practical and intimate: wood, grazing, water and routes across the mountains have shaped life here for generations.

We continue south toward Midelt, where the Middle Atlas begins giving way to the much greater mass of the High Atlas.

Jbel Ayachi rises above this country, and the landscape becomes increasingly austere.

Then comes one of the transitions I most want you to notice.

As we cross toward the southern side of the mountains, vegetation begins to retreat. Moisture becomes scarce. The green landscapes of the north slowly surrender to rock, open plateau and immense horizons.

The mountains that collect life-giving moisture on one side also help create aridity on the other.

Geography has become climate.

And climate will soon become culture.

Descending through the Ziz country, we begin to see how people answered scarcity. Where water appears, palms gather around it. Villages follow. Cultivation returns. Human settlement stretches along the valley in a narrow ribbon of green surrounded by increasingly dry land.

Here an oasis is no longer something picturesque.

It is an agreement between water, soil and human ingenuity.

By the time we reach Erfoud and continue toward Merzouga, the great dunes begin to rise on the horizon.

The transition is complete.

This morning we travelled through cedar forests and mountain water.

Tonight we sleep beside the Sahara.

Depending on conditions and preference, we continue toward our desert camp by camel or four-wheel drive, leaving the paved road behind as the dunes gather around us.

There is very little we need to say when we arrive.

The desert has its own way of reducing conversation.

For tonight, we eat beneath the open sky and allow silence, distance and darkness to become part of the expedition.

Yesterday we learned that the village can explain the city.

Today the mountains begin to explain the country.

The Sahara wakes differently.

Before the heat begins to rise, we have the opportunity to walk onto the dunes and watch the first light move across them. What seemed almost without form during the night slowly reveals ridges, shadows and an immense horizon.

But today we begin by questioning one of our most persistent ideas about the desert.

We call it empty.

It never was.

For centuries, the Sahara connected rather than separated. Caravans crossed it carrying salt, gold, textiles, manuscripts, spices and other goods, but they also carried languages, beliefs, music, stories and knowledge. Routes developed between wells and oases, and communities grew wherever water made settlement possible.

After breakfast we leave the dunes to explore this human Sahara.

We travel toward Rissani, an old oasis town of the Tafilalt and one of the historic gateways to the trans-Saharan routes. Its importance was never accidental. Water, date palms, agriculture and its position near the desert routes allowed communities to settle here and trade with worlds extending far beyond the horizon.

The oasis itself deserves our attention.

Yesterday we called it an agreement between water, soil and human ingenuity.

Today we walk inside that agreement.

The date palm provides more than fruit. Its height creates shade; beneath it other fruit trees can grow, and closer to the ground vegetables, grains and fodder can be cultivated. Layers of agriculture make use of precious land and water while protecting crops from the severity of the desert climate.

What appears from a distance as a strip of green is, on closer inspection, a carefully constructed ecology of survival.

We also encounter another archive of the Sahara—stone.

The region around Erfoud is known for fossils preserved in rock formed hundreds of millions of years ago, when environments here were profoundly different from the desert before us today. Local workshops cut and polish this stone, revealing marine life inside landscapes now among the driest on earth.

There is something wonderfully unsettling about holding the fossil of a sea creature in the Sahara.

It reminds us that landscapes are not permanent.

The mountains changed.

The rivers changed.

The climate changed.

The sea disappeared.

Human beings arrived much later and learned to live with what remained.

By late afternoon we return from the great scale of geological time to the human scale of the oasis and desert settlements.

Yesterday the Atlas taught us why the Sahara begins.

Today the Sahara teaches us that scarcity does not mean absence.

Where there is a little water, life gathers around it.

Where there is a route, people move along it.

Where people meet, they exchange more than goods.

And suddenly the desert no longer appears empty.

It appears connected.

This morning we leave the great dunes behind, but we do not really leave the Sahara.

Instead, we begin following the places where the desert and water negotiate with one another.

The road west from Erfoud crosses a landscape that at first appears austere—rock, gravel, distant mountains and enormous sky. Then, almost without warning, a line of green appears.

Palms.

Fields.

A village.

Water has announced itself.

As we travel toward Tinghir, these ribbons of cultivation become one of the day's great lessons. Rivers and underground water descending from the Atlas have allowed communities to create oases where agriculture can survive at the edge of the desert.

From a distance, an oasis may look like nature's generosity.

Come closer and you discover human labor everywhere.

Water must be found, diverted, shared and protected. Channels must be maintained. Fields must be cultivated. Date palms must be tended. Rights to water must be understood and respected.

An oasis is not simply where water exists.

It is where people learned how to live together around water.

And perhaps that is why water in Morocco is never merely geography.

It becomes agriculture.

It becomes settlement.

It becomes cooperation.

It becomes law.

It becomes culture.

By the time we reach Tinghir, the relationship is written clearly across the landscape. The palm grove stretches through otherwise arid country like a green artery, sustaining villages and cultivated plots along its course.

We continue toward the Todra Gorge, where the landscape suddenly narrows.

Here water has been working on stone for a very long time.

Great walls of rock rise around us as the river passes through the mountain, reminding us that the apparently solid landscape is also in movement—only at a rhythm much slower than our own.

We take time to walk.

After days of roads, dunes and immense horizons, the gorge changes our sense of scale. In the Sahara the sky made us feel small. Here the rock does.

Yet beneath both landscapes runs the same lesson.

Human life in this country has always depended upon learning where water goes.

Villages follow it.

Gardens follow it.

Palms follow it.

Roads often follow it.

And eventually, civilizations follow it.

Tonight, as we settle in around Tinghir, we have travelled only a portion of southern Morocco, but perhaps we are beginning to read it differently.

Yesterday we discovered that the desert was never empty.

Today we discover that an oasis is not simply a place in the desert. It is a human achievement.

Yesterday we learned how people live together around water.

Today we discover what happens when that water begins connecting communities across an entire landscape.

We leave Tinghir and travel southwest through increasingly open country toward the Draa Valley, crossing the folds and passes of the Anti-Atlas. The mountains here are older, drier and more exposed than the great Atlas ranges we crossed several days ago. Rock dominates the landscape, and human settlement becomes increasingly dependent upon the places where water can still gather.

Then we meet the Draa.

Suddenly the desert has a green spine.

Date palms stretch along the valley. Cultivated plots gather beneath them. Earthen villages and kasbahs rise from the same soil on which they stand, sometimes appearing less constructed than grown from the landscape itself.

But the Draa is more than an oasis.

It is a corridor.

For centuries, this valley helped connect the interior of Morocco with the Sahara and the lands beyond it. Water made movement possible, and movement brought traders, pilgrims, nomads, scholars, goods and ideas through these settlements.

The river nourished fields.

The valley nourished journeys.

Here again, geography becomes history.

We stop around Agdez and continue through villages scattered along the palm groves, taking time to notice how settlement follows the availability of water. The architecture responds to climate as naturally as agriculture does: thick earthen walls protect against heat, enclosed spaces provide shade and security, and villages gather closely rather than spreading wastefully across cultivable land.

In a country where fertile soil and reliable water are precious, even the position of a house becomes part of survival.

As we continue toward Zagora, the landscape becomes increasingly Saharan, yet human presence does not disappear.

It reorganizes itself.

This is something the desert has been teaching us since Merzouga.

When resources become scarce, relationships become more important.

People must know where water lies.

They must know when to move.

They must know what can be cultivated.

They must know whom they can trade with.

They must know whom they can trust.

Perhaps this is why caravan routes were never simply lines across a map. They were chains of human relationships stretched across enormous distances.

By late afternoon we arrive in Zagora, once an important staging point on the routes leading farther into the Sahara.

Tomorrow we continue toward Tamegroute and M'Hamid, closer to the point where cultivated Morocco begins surrendering almost completely to the desert.

But tonight we remain beside the Draa.

Yesterday water taught us how a community survives.

Today it teaches us something larger:

Water does not only create life. Sometimes it creates roads.

Yesterday we followed water through the Draa Valley and discovered how an oasis could become a road.

Today we follow that road toward the edge of settled Morocco.

As we travel south from Zagora, the palm groves continue beside us, sometimes broad and generous, sometimes narrowing as the country becomes increasingly dry. Villages rise from the earth in much the same colors as the landscape, while beyond the cultivated strip the desert waits remarkably close.

Our first important stop is Tamegroute.

At first glance it may appear to be another small oasis settlement along the Draa.

Look again.

For centuries, Tamegroute developed as a center of religious learning associated with the Nasiriyya tradition. Its historic library preserves manuscripts dealing with theology, law, language, astronomy, medicine and other fields of knowledge gathered and copied across generations.

Here the caravan road reveals another purpose.

We often imagine Saharan caravans carrying salt, gold, cloth, spices and other merchandise.

But books travelled too.

So did scholars.

So did ideas.

A manuscript could cross the desert just as merchandise could, passing from teacher to student, library to library and generation to generation.

The Sahara was therefore not merely a commercial space.

It was also an intellectual highway.

We take time in Tamegroute to encounter this scholarly inheritance and the distinctive pottery tradition for which the village is also known, another form of knowledge transmitted through hands rather than pages.

Then we continue toward M'Hamid, where the Draa Valley approaches the open Sahara and the relationship between water and settlement becomes increasingly fragile.

The landscape grows more exposed.

And now another archive surrounds us.

Stone.

The rocks, dry plateaus and ancient formations of southern Morocco carry a history immeasurably older than the caravans that crossed them. Elsewhere on our journey we have already held marine fossils in the Sahara—a reminder that environments we experience as permanent are anything but permanent.

Before the caravan, there was the river.

Before the oasis, there was the rock.

Before human history, the land had already been travelling through its own immense history.

And when water eventually moved through these landscapes, it carried part of that geology with it—minerals and sediments deposited in valleys and lowlands where, together with organic matter and human cultivation, soils could support life.

Before water writes upon the landscape, geology has already prepared the page.

Perhaps that is another way to understand the Draa.

Rock provides possibilities.

Water awakens them.

Human knowledge learns how to use them.

And culture grows around the relationship.

Near M'Hamid, cultivated Morocco begins to loosen its grip. Palm groves become more scattered, horizons widen and the great Saharan spaces ahead begin to dominate.

Yet even here, what looks empty has carried extraordinary traffic.

People crossed.

Goods crossed.

Books crossed.

Beliefs crossed.

Stories crossed.

Knowledge crossed.

By late afternoon we return toward Zagora carrying perhaps a different image of the Sahara from the one with which we arrived several days ago.

We first saw dunes.

Then we discovered water.

Then routes.

Today we discover memory.

The desert has never been silent.

We simply had to learn how to read it.

Today we leave the Draa Valley and travel west through one of the least familiar landscapes of our expedition.

The road toward Foum Zguid and Tata runs through the immense country between the Sahara and the Anti-Atlas, where mountains, dry plains, rocky plateaus and occasional oases seem to reduce the landscape to its essential elements.

Rock.

Earth.

Water.

Plants.

And human ingenuity.

By now we have learned not to call such country empty.

Instead, we begin asking a different question:

What does the land provide, and what have people learned to make from it?

The answer is everywhere.

Earth becomes walls.

Clay becomes vessels.

Stone becomes shelter and tools.

Plants become food, medicine, fibers and dyes.

Minerals provide pigments and contribute to glazes and other practical uses.

Palm trees provide fruit, shade, timber and fibers.

Nothing useful is easily wasted in an environment where resources must be understood carefully.

Yesterday in Tamegroute we encountered this relationship through pottery. Clay taken from the earth is shaped by human hands and transformed by fire; mineral-rich materials contribute to the distinctive glaze that has made Tamegroute pottery recognizable far beyond the Draa Valley.

The object may be beautiful.

But beauty here often begins with usefulness.

A bowl must hold food.

A jar must hold water.

A wall must protect against heat.

Clothing must protect the body.

Color itself may come from what the surrounding environment provides or from materials carried along the trade routes that crossed it.

Even indigo, the deep blue plant-derived dye associated with Saharan textiles, tells a larger story. Cloth is not merely decoration in this climate. What people wear responds to sun, heat, wind and dust. Across Saharan cultures, knowledge of fabrics, wrapping, dyes, oils, plants and other preparations developed alongside the practical need to protect the body and skin in an unforgiving environment.

Culture begins to look different when we understand necessity.

What a visitor may admire as a color, a ceramic, a garment or an architectural style may contain generations of observation.

Someone had to learn which earth could build.

Which clay could hold.

Which plant could dye.

Which material could cool.

Which substance could protect.

Which stone contained something useful.

This is knowledge too.

Not all libraries have shelves.

As we travel through Foum Zguid, the landscape becomes increasingly geological. Exposed rock and broad plains allow us to see something normally hidden beneath vegetation and soil: the physical foundations upon which human life has had to negotiate its existence.

When water appears, it works upon that geological inheritance.

It carries sediments.

It gathers minerals.

It creates soils.

Then human beings enter the relationship—diverting water, enriching the earth, planting, building and adapting what nature provides to what life requires.

Geology provides the possibilities. Water awakens them. Human knowledge gives them purpose.

By the time we reach the oasis country around Tata, green appears again against the mineral landscape.

After hours of stone and aridity, a cultivated plot can seem almost miraculous.

But we now know better than to call it simply a miracle of nature.

It is also labor.

Knowledge.

Cooperation.

Adaptation.

Generations learning from the same land.

Tonight we stay in the Tata region, surrounded by a landscape that at first seems to possess very little and yet has taught its inhabitants to make remarkable use of what it gives.

Perhaps abundance is not always having more.

Sometimes abundance begins by knowing the value of what is already there.

This morning we leave Tata and continue westward along the old Saharan corridors toward Guelmim.

By now the word hinterland may have begun to mean something different.

At the beginning of our expedition it described the country beyond the familiar destinations. But travelling through these remote regions taught me something years ago that I have never forgotten.

The hinterland can also be a place where knowledge hides.

I discovered this unexpectedly in southern Morocco.

In places such as Tamegroute and Tata, far from the great institutions we normally associate with Moroccan scholarship, I encountered traditions of remarkably sophisticated astronomical and metaphysical knowledge—material and ways of thinking that I had not encountered even in my familiarity with the celebrated intellectual world of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez.

It disturbed one of my assumptions.

I had unconsciously imagined knowledge as a river flowing outward from the great centers of learning.

Fez.

Marrakech.

The famous universities.

The great libraries.

But knowledge does not always travel from center to periphery.

Sometimes it travels the other way.

And sometimes, when political centers change, libraries disappear or intellectual fashions move elsewhere, knowledge survives precisely because somebody in a remote village continues to protect it.

This makes sense when we consider the world through which we are travelling.

Astronomy was not an abstraction beneath the Saharan sky.

The heavens mattered.

The movement of the sun mattered.

The lunar calendar mattered.

The seasons mattered.

Direction mattered.

Time mattered.

For travelers crossing immense spaces with few visible landmarks, knowledge of the sky could become practical knowledge.

But human beings rarely stop at usefulness.

Once we look upward long enough to ask where we are, another question eventually follows:

What are we?

And perhaps this is where astronomy begins touching metaphysics.

The same sky that helps a traveler find direction can cause a contemplative person to lose all sense of human importance.

The stars can guide the caravan.

They can also guide the imagination.

As we travel toward Guelmim today, I want us to remember that the caravans crossing these landscapes did not carry only commodities.

They carried people who knew things.

A scholar travelled.

A manuscript travelled.

A calculation travelled.

A story travelled.

A medicinal recipe travelled.

A theological argument travelled.

A method of observing the stars travelled.

And when that traveler stopped in an oasis, some of that knowledge stayed behind.

Perhaps this is how the Sahara should be mapped—not only by roads between places, but by roads between minds.

The landscape continues to teach us the same lesson in other forms.

Yesterday we saw how people learned from clay, minerals, plants, stone and water. Today we see that practical knowledge and contemplative knowledge were never necessarily separate.

To know the seasons was useful to the farmer.

To know the stars was useful to the traveler.

To understand water was essential to the oasis.

But observation also invited contemplation.

The useful could become beautiful.

The measurable could open toward the immeasurable.

And knowledge could become wisdom.

We continue westward until we reach Guelmim, historically one of Morocco's important meeting places between the settled north and the Saharan world.

Here routes converged.

People arrived from different ecological and cultural regions carrying what their own lands produced and seeking what their lands could not provide.

Goods met goods.

Languages met languages.

Ideas met ideas.

People met people.

And once again, the supposed emptiness of the Sahara reveals itself as connection.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of today's journey is a simple one:

Never confuse remoteness with ignorance.

A great university may preserve knowledge because everybody recognizes its importance.

A remote community may preserve knowledge because somebody quietly refuses to let it disappear.

Both are libraries.

One has walls and a famous name.

The other may be hidden in the hinterland.

Dinner and overnight in Guelmim.

This morning we leave Guelmim and begin turning north toward Tiznit.

But before we leave, it is worth understanding where we have arrived.

For days we have followed the old Saharan world westward—from the Tafilalt and the Draa through Tamegroute, Tata and the great dry country between mountain and desert.

Guelmim stands near the western end of that story.

Historically, this was an important meeting ground between the settled regions of Morocco and the Saharan routes extending southward. Traders, nomads, pastoral communities and merchants came here carrying what their own environments produced and looking for what they could not produce themselves.

The desert had dates, livestock, salt and goods arriving from farther south.

Other regions offered grain, textiles, manufactured goods and agricultural products.

The caravan therefore did something very human.

It connected one landscape's abundance with another landscape's need.

Trade begins to look different when we see it this way.

It is not simply buying and selling.

It is geography exchanging with geography.

Mountains cannot produce everything.

Neither can deserts.

Neither can coasts.

Human beings solved that limitation by moving.

And wherever people moved, culture moved with them.

Languages travelled.

Music travelled.

Clothing travelled.

Food travelled.

Beliefs travelled.

Knowledge travelled.

Even materials travelled.

The indigo we spoke of earlier reminds us that what becomes characteristic of a place does not necessarily originate there. A material may travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers, arrive in another environment, be adopted for practical reasons, and eventually become so deeply associated with the people using it that we begin to call it tradition.

Tradition itself sometimes has travelled.

As we leave Guelmim, another transition gradually begins.

The severe Saharan landscapes soften. The influence of the Anti-Atlas remains around us, but vegetation begins to change. Argan country starts to appear, announcing our approach toward the ecological world of the Souss and southwest Morocco.

Here again, geology, water and climate have prepared different possibilities.

And people answered differently.

The date palm that made sense in the oasis gives way increasingly to other forms of cultivation and pastoral life. Architecture changes. Foods change. Markets change. The relationship with the land changes.

Culture follows ecology, but never mechanically.

Human beings interpret what the landscape gives them.

They experiment.

They exchange.

They remember.

And eventually adaptation becomes tradition.

We continue toward Tiznit, a walled town whose history is closely tied to the communities and trade networks of the surrounding Anti-Atlas and Souss.

Its reputation for silverwork gives us another opportunity to see how material becomes culture.

Silver is a mineral.

In the hands of a craftsman it becomes something else.

A bracelet can become wealth.

A fibula can fasten clothing.

Jewelry can identify region, family, taste or status.

An object can be practical, beautiful and symbolic at the same time.

The earth provides the material.

Human hands provide the transformation.

Culture provides the meaning.

By now this relationship should feel familiar.

We saw earth become architecture.

Clay become pottery.

Plants become dyes.

Water become agriculture.

Stone become tools and memory.

Today mineral becomes ornament, wealth and identity.

Perhaps this is one of the great privileges of travelling slowly.

After thirteen days, we no longer encounter objects as isolated curiosities.

We begin seeing relationships.

Tonight we settle in Tiznit.

Tomorrow we turn inland again toward the extraordinary granite landscapes of Tafraoute and the Anti-Atlas, where geology will no longer remain beneath our feet.

It will rise around us.

Today we leave Tiznit and turn inland toward Tafraoute, entering one of Morocco's most distinctive geological landscapes.

The Anti-Atlas does not welcome us with the forests and flowing water we encountered farther north.

It speaks another language.

Rock.

Light.

Space.

Scarcity.

As the road climbs into the mountains, great formations begin to dominate the landscape. Around Tafraoute, granite has been exposed, fractured and sculpted by immense stretches of geological time. Rounded boulders balance upon one another, mountains break into strange forms, and villages appear almost tucked into the stone.

Today geology no longer hides beneath the landscape.

Geology is the landscape.

And yet people live here.

That simple fact should make us curious.

For the experienced traveler, perhaps one of the most interesting questions is no longer, “Isn't this beautiful?”

It is:

How did people make a life here?

The answer begins, as it so often does in Morocco, with learning how to read the land.

Where does rainwater collect?

Which valley holds moisture longer?

Which slope can support a terrace?

Where has erosion deposited enough soil?

Which tree can survive a dry year?

Which crop can tolerate poor ground?

Where can a house stand without consuming precious cultivable land?

These are not small questions.

Across generations, they become knowledge.

The people of the Anti-Atlas learned that an apparently severe landscape contains possibilities, but those possibilities reveal themselves only to those who observe carefully.

Almond trees became one of the answers.

So did argan.

So did barley, olives, figs, livestock and the small cultivated plots created wherever soil and water permitted them.

Nothing here should be understood in isolation.

The granite we admire influences the soils that develop around it.

Rain works upon the rock.

Erosion carries particles downward.

Sediments gather in hollows and valleys.

Water follows gravity.

Human beings watch.

Then they build a terrace.

Plant a tree.

Construct a channel.

Protect the soil.

Wait for rain.

And begin again.

Geology provides the possibilities. Water awakens them. Human knowledge gives them purpose.

We have repeated this relationship before, but here in the Anti-Atlas we can almost watch it happening.

Even the location of villages tells the story.

Traditionally, valuable cultivable ground was not casually surrendered to buildings. Houses gathered together, often against slopes or rocky ground, leaving better soils available for crops.

Architecture therefore becomes part of agriculture.

Agriculture becomes part of water management.

Water management becomes part of community.

And once again, everything belongs together.

As we approach Tafraoute, we enter a deeply rooted Amazigh cultural landscape.

But by now we should be cautious about treating culture as something separate from environment.

The houses, foods, agricultural rhythms, clothing, markets, patterns of migration and social relationships developed through generations of conversation between people and place.

Even migration tells us something about the land.

When a mountain environment cannot provide everything a growing community requires, people move. They trade. They establish businesses elsewhere. They maintain relationships with the village. Money, ideas and experience travel back.

A person may leave the mountain without the mountain leaving the person.

Perhaps this, too, is a form of hinterland.

A remote village can have relationships extending across Morocco and far beyond it.

We spend time around Tafraoute walking through this extraordinary landscape rather than merely photographing it.

Touch the rock.

Look at the small plots between enormous formations.

Notice where the houses stand.

Look for the trees.

Ask where the water comes from.

By Day 14, these questions should have become almost instinctive.

We are learning to read Morocco.

And perhaps the Anti-Atlas gives us another lesson.

We often measure wealth by quantity.

How much water?

How much fertile land?

How much vegetation?

How much can be produced?

But people who have lived for generations in difficult environments sometimes teach us another definition.

Wealth can also be the knowledge of how little one needs to waste.

Tonight we stay among the mountains of Tafraoute.

Around us are rocks hundreds of millions of years older than the human stories we have been following.

Yet somewhere between those rocks, someone planted an almond tree.

And it grew.

Perhaps that small tree tells us as much about Morocco as any monument we have visited.

Dinner and overnight in Tafraoute.

This morning we leave the granite country of Tafraoute and descend toward the Souss.

Yesterday we stood among ancient rocks and contemplated an almond tree growing between them.

Today we follow what happens when the mountains begin releasing what they have gathered.

The landscape changes gradually.

The severe formations of the Anti-Atlas open toward broader valleys. Argan trees become increasingly familiar companions, villages appear among cultivated land, and eventually the great basin of the Souss spreads before us.

After days of travelling through environments where every patch of soil and every source of water seemed precious, the transition is striking.

But fertile country does not appear from nowhere.

The mountains have been working on it for a very long time.

Rock breaks.

Water moves it.

Rivers and floods carry sediments downward.

Valleys collect them.

Soils deepen.

Underground water gathers.

And eventually human beings arrive and discover possibility.

Mountains do not only rise above fertile plains. Sometimes, over immense stretches of time, they help create them.

The Souss lies between the High Atlas to the north and the Anti-Atlas to the south, held almost like a great garden between two mountain systems.

Water descending from those mountains, together with the soils accumulated across the basin, helped make this one of Morocco's important agricultural regions.

But nature provided possibility, not agriculture.

People did the rest.

They dug wells.

Managed water.

Planted.

Grafted.

Pruned.

Harvested.

Experimented.

Remembered what worked.

Passed that knowledge to their children.

And gradually landscape became livelihood.

As we travel through the Souss, we encounter argan, olives, citrus, vegetables and other crops cultivated across a region whose agricultural importance reaches far beyond the villages we pass.

Here the relationship between geology, water and human knowledge that has accompanied us throughout the expedition becomes particularly visible.

But abundance brings its own responsibility.

Water that appears plentiful can still be exhausted.

Soil that has produced for generations can still be damaged.

An aquifer accumulated over long periods can be depleted much faster than nature replenishes it.

Perhaps scarcity teaches conservation immediately.

Abundance sometimes takes longer to teach the same lesson.

This is particularly important in the Souss, where agriculture, growing settlements and changing climatic conditions have placed increasing pressure on water resources.

The lesson of the oasis has followed us here.

Water must still be shared with the future.

Along the road, the argan tree tells another story.

Its twisted form may appear almost stubborn against the dry landscape, but its deep adaptation to southwest Morocco has made it valuable to people and ecosystems alike. Its fruit supports an old rural economy, traditionally associated particularly with women's knowledge and labor, while the tree itself helps hold soil and survive conditions that defeat less adapted species.

Once again, what appears ordinary beside the road becomes extraordinary when we learn how to read it.

By afternoon we approach Taroudant.

Behind its earthen walls lies an old market town strategically placed between mountain, plain and the routes connecting the Souss with Marrakech, the Anti-Atlas and Saharan country.

And now something from earlier in our journey returns.

Where landscapes meet, markets grow.

Taroudant did not prosper simply because someone decided to build a town here.

Around it were different ecological worlds producing different things.

The mountains had something to exchange with the plain.

The plain had something to exchange with the desert.

Farmers met pastoralists.

Craftspeople met merchants.

Villages met wider commercial networks.

Geography created difference.

Movement turned difference into exchange.

And exchange helped create the town.

We enter Taroudant through this understanding.

Its walls, souks and workshops are worth exploring, certainly, but by Day 15 we are learning not to separate a town from the landscape that feeds it.

The market begins in the mountains.

It begins in the field.

It begins at the well.

It begins with the shepherd.

It begins with someone harvesting an argan fruit or picking an almond from a tree growing improbably between rocks.

Only later does everything arrive in the souk.

Tonight we stay in Taroudant.

We have travelled from scarcity toward abundance, but perhaps the two are not opposites after all.

Both require knowledge.

Both require restraint.

Both require gratitude.

And both remind us of something the expedition has been teaching us since we crossed the Atlas:

The land can provide for us only as long as we remember that it does not belong only to us.

Dinner and overnight in Taroudant.

This morning we leave the fertile country of the Souss and turn once again toward the High Atlas.

We have seen these mountains before.

But perhaps we have not seen them like this.

On Day 6, crossing south toward the Sahara, we discovered the Atlas as one of Morocco's great reservoirs of life. Since then we have followed that water through valleys, oases, palm groves, villages, fields and caravan routes.

We watched people organize communities around it.

We saw water become agriculture.

Agriculture become settlement.

Settlement become trade.

And trade connect landscapes that could never provide everything for themselves.

Today we begin travelling back toward the source.

From Taroudant, the road rises gradually out of the Souss. Cultivated plains give way to foothills, valleys narrow, slopes steepen and the High Atlas begins to dominate the horizon.

The higher we travel, the more clearly we see that a mountain is never simply a mountain.

It is rock, certainly.

But it is also stored water.

Pasture.

Forest.

Soil.

Shelter.

A barrier.

A passage.

A homeland.

And for communities living far below, it may be a source of life they rarely see.

This is one of the lessons our expedition has taught us repeatedly: what sustains a place may originate somewhere else.

The oasis remembers the mountain through its water.

The plain remembers it through its soil.

The market remembers it through the produce arriving from valleys and farms.

Even the city carries the mountain invisibly within it.

As we climb toward the Toubkal region, human adaptation changes again.

Here there is no broad plain on which to spread a village comfortably.

Land must be negotiated vertically.

Homes gather against slopes.

Fields are terraced where possible.

Paths follow contours.

Water is guided carefully.

Walnut, apple and other trees appear where altitude and water permit, while livestock make use of terrain unsuitable for cultivation.

Once again, architecture is not separate from agriculture, and agriculture is not separate from geography.

The mountain decides some things.

Human ingenuity negotiates the rest.

Eventually we reach Imlil, a mountain village lying beneath the great mass of the Toubkal region.

For many visitors, Imlil is simply the starting point for a trek.

For us, after sixteen days on the road, it means something more.

We have arrived inside the machinery of the landscape.

The water we followed through southern Morocco begins in places like these—with rain, snow, springs, rock and altitude.

And even here geology is quietly at work.

Rock weathers.

Water carries it.

Gravity moves it.

Valleys receive it.

Far downstream, what begins as erosion may eventually become fertile soil.

The mountain is slowly giving itself away.

Perhaps that is why our reflection yesterday remains with me.

The Earth is not greedy.

The mountain holds water and releases it.

Rock becomes sediment.

Trees give fruit.

Pastures feed animals.

Generation after generation receives something from this landscape.

But mountain environments are also fragile. What takes centuries to establish can be disturbed quickly. Water, forests, soils and pastures require the same principle we encountered in the oasis:

Take what is needed.

Leave enough for what comes after.

This afternoon we walk around Imlil and its surrounding valleys, allowing our bodies to enter the landscape after the journey by road.

We meet a Morocco shaped by altitude: mountain homes, terraced agriculture, narrow paths, streams and communities whose knowledge of these slopes has accumulated across generations.

And perhaps we understand them differently now.

On Day 6 we looked at the Atlas and said:

There is the mountain.

Today we can look again and see:

the oasis,

the field,

the village,

the market,

the almond tree,

the glass of water.

They were all hidden inside it.

Tonight we sleep beneath the High Atlas.

Tomorrow we walk deeper into this mountain world.

But for now, perhaps it is enough simply to recognize where we have returned.

**We followed the water for thousands of kilometers, and it has brought us back to the mountain.

Dinner and overnight in Imlil.

Today we stay in the mountains.

No long road. No great historical monument. No need to explain Morocco.

We walk.

After breakfast, we set out through the valleys and villages around Imlil, following mountain paths toward Aremd and the surrounding countryside beneath the great peaks of the High Atlas.

By now, much of what we see should feel familiar.

Terraced fields climb the slopes.

Water runs down from higher ground.

Walnut and fruit trees gather where soil and moisture allow them.

Houses settle into the mountainside.

Footpaths connect one village with another.

Livestock make use of land that cannot easily be cultivated.

Sixteen days ago, perhaps we would simply have called this a beautiful mountain landscape.

Today we can read some of what lies behind it.

But we do not have to.

Sometimes understanding should give way to enjoyment.

We take our time, stopping along the way, meeting people when the opportunity arises and allowing the rhythm of walking to replace the rhythm of the road.

There is something important about travelling through a landscape on foot.

Distances become human again.

A village is no longer five minutes away.

It is a path, a climb, a stream crossing, a greeting, a pause beneath a tree.

The mountain is no longer outside the vehicle window.

We are inside it.

Depending on the group and conditions, our walk can be adapted in length and difficulty. This is not a day about reaching a summit. It is about being present in the High Atlas.

Perhaps that is enough.

For more than two weeks Morocco has been teaching us through cities, deserts, oases, rocks, rivers, markets and roads.

Today there is no lesson planned.

**We simply walk and allow the journey to settle inside us.

Dinner and overnight in Imlil.

This morning we leave Imlil and descend from the High Atlas toward Marrakech.

The journey is not long, but after seventeen days of travelling through Morocco, the road carries more meaning than it would have at the beginning.

Mountain villages gradually give way to foothills.

Valleys broaden.

Cultivated land returns.

And eventually the plain of Marrakech opens before us.

Then the city appears.

For many travelers, Marrakech is where Morocco begins.

For us, it arrives on Day 18.

And perhaps that is exactly where it belongs on this expedition.

We have already travelled through many of the landscapes and human relationships that helped make a city like Marrakech possible.

We have crossed the mountains that provide water.

We have walked through the valleys that produce food.

We have followed caravan routes that carried goods and ideas from the Sahara.

We have visited villages where craftsmen learned from local materials.

We have seen markets emerge where different ecological worlds needed one another.

Now many of those threads meet in the city.

Marrakech grew where geography made encounter possible—between the High Atlas, the Haouz plain, the routes toward the Souss and Sahara, and the roads leading north toward the rest of Morocco.

The mountains behind it were not simply a beautiful backdrop.

They helped make the city possible.

As we enter Marrakech, we settle into our accommodation and allow the afternoon to unfold at an easier pace.

There will be time tomorrow to explore the medina properly.

For now, perhaps the best introduction is simply to walk.

Eventually we make our way toward Djemaa el-Fna, where Marrakech seems to gather itself each evening.

Food sellers arrive.

Musicians play.

Storytellers, performers, merchants, residents and travelers share the same great public space.

After everything we have learned about movement and exchange, perhaps we can see the square differently.

It is not merely entertainment.

It is encounter.

People bringing something into a shared space and finding someone else waiting for it.

A story needs a listener.

A musician needs an ear.

A cook needs someone hungry.

A merchant needs a customer.

A traveler needs a story to carry home.

For centuries, cities have lived through these encounters.

Tonight we do not need to analyze Marrakech.

We have travelled far enough to let ourselves simply enjoy it.

Seventeen days ago we began at the threshold of Morocco in Tangier.

Today, after mountains, deserts, oases, villages, caravan roads and countless cups of tea, we arrive in one of its great cities.

But perhaps the most important difference is not Marrakech.

It is the eyes with which we now see it.

Dinner and overnight in Marrakech.

Today we explore Marrakech.

But after eighteen days together, perhaps we no longer visit a city in quite the same way.

We begin in the old medina, walking through neighborhoods, souks and some of the monuments that reveal the city's long history. Depending on opening times and interests, our exploration may include places such as the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Medersa and the great Koutoubia Mosque that has watched over the city for centuries.

They are beautiful places.

But beauty is no longer enough for us.

By now we have learned to ask where things come from.

Look at a carved cedar ceiling and remember the mountains.

Look at plaster and remember stone and minerals.

Look at zellij and remember earth, water, pigment, fire and the hand of the craftsman.

Look at a carpet and think of wool, plants, dyes, pastoral life and the woman who carried a design in her memory before transferring it to the loom.

Look at leather and remember livestock, water, tanning, trade and generations of specialized knowledge.

Look at silver and remember the mineral before the ornament.

Suddenly the souk becomes something more than a place to shop.

It becomes a map of Morocco made from objects.

The country we have travelled through for eighteen days has quietly gathered here.

The mountains have entered the workshop.

The desert has entered the spice market.

The pastoral world has entered the carpet.

The oasis has entered the basket of dates.

The argan country has entered the bottle.

And traditions that themselves travelled across centuries have entered almost everything.

We continue through the medina at an unhurried pace.

There is architecture to admire, certainly, but we also pay attention to how the city works: narrow streets creating shade, houses turning inward around courtyards, fountains recalling the importance of water, workshops grouped around particular crafts and markets connecting producer, merchant and household.

The same relationships we discovered in Fez appear again, but Marrakech speaks them with its own accent.

That is another lesson travel eventually teaches us.

Similarity does not erase difference.

Two Moroccan cities can share faith, architectural principles, crafts and social institutions and still possess completely different personalities.

We take time for lunch and continue exploring according to the rhythm of the day.

Perhaps we return to Djemaa el-Fna later, when the evening begins changing the square once again.

There is no examination at the end of this expedition.

No one needs to remember every dynasty, date or architectural term.

If we have travelled well, something simpler has happened.

We have become curious.

We have learned to look at a wall and wonder what it is made from.

To see an oasis and ask where its water originates.

To enter a market and wonder what roads brought everything there.

To meet a tradition and ask where it has travelled.

To see a village and ask why it was built precisely there.

And perhaps most importantly, to meet people without assuming that what appears simple is therefore without knowledge.

Marrakech gives us plenty to see today.

But Morocco has spent nineteen days teaching us how to see.

Today we leave Marrakech and travel west toward the Atlantic.

After the intensity of the medina, the landscape opens again.

The road carries us across the plains toward the coast, through agricultural country and the increasingly familiar argan landscape of southwest Morocco.

By now, the argan tree needs little introduction.

We have learned that a tree is never simply a tree.

It can hold soil.

Feed animals.

Produce food.

Support livelihoods.

Carry inherited knowledge.

And become part of the identity of an entire landscape.

We continue westward.

Gradually something changes in the air.

Long before we see the Atlantic, we may begin to feel its influence.

The light changes.

The vegetation responds.

The temperature softens.

And eventually the horizon opens.

The ocean has returned.

We first encountered the Atlantic twenty days ago at Tangier, where it met the Mediterranean and where our expedition began.

Then we turned inland.

Since then we have crossed mountains, followed rivers, slept beside dunes, walked through oases, travelled old caravan routes, entered palm groves, crossed ancient geological landscapes and watched people create livelihoods from environments that sometimes appeared to offer almost nothing.

Now we meet the Atlantic again.

There is something satisfying about that.

A journey does not always need to form a circle on a map to complete one inside us.

By afternoon we arrive in Essaouira.

The city faces the ocean openly, yet its history has always looked inland as well.

That relationship matters.

A port does not live from the sea alone.

Everything that reaches the harbor must come from somewhere.

Agricultural products arrive from the countryside.

Crafts arrive from workshops.

Goods travel from inland markets.

People bring languages, skills, beliefs and ambitions.

And ships carry some of them elsewhere.

For much of our expedition we followed the caravan.

Today we meet the ship.

One crossed the desert.

The other crossed the sea.

Both connected worlds.

Essaouira grew from that meeting between hinterland and ocean.

Moroccan Muslims, Jews, Amazigh communities, merchants, sailors, craftsmen and visitors from beyond Morocco all participated in the life of this Atlantic town across different periods of its history.

Perhaps that is why Essaouira has always felt difficult to reduce to one identity.

Ports rarely belong to only one direction.

We walk through the medina and toward the harbor, but without urgency.

Fishing boats return.

Gulls circle above the port.

The smell of salt replaces the dust of the interior.

After so many days of mountains and desert, perhaps the greatest pleasure is simply to stand beside the water.

And listen.

Twenty days ago, the ocean watched us leave.

Today it receives us back.

But we return carrying the mountains with us.

The Sahara.

The oasis.

The almond tree between the rocks.

The old scholar near Tata.

The markets.

The villages.

The roads.

And all those people who taught us, knowingly or unknowingly, how to see.

Perhaps that is what travel finally does.

We leave a place behind, but the place does not necessarily leave us.

Tonight we sleep beside the Atlantic.

No great lesson is required.

The ocean is enough.

Dinner and overnight in Essaouira.

Today we stay in Essaouira.

There is nowhere we urgently need to reach.

After twenty days of roads, mountains, deserts, villages and cities, this is a day to wander at our own pace.

We return to the medina, perhaps following streets we passed yesterday without noticing. We walk along the ramparts, visit workshops, watch fishermen around the harbor, sit in a café or simply allow the Atlantic air to determine the rhythm of the day.

By now, something may have changed in the way we travel.

At the beginning of the expedition, a guide had to point things out.

Look at this.

Notice that.

Let me explain why this village is here.

Let me show you where the water comes from.

But after twenty days, perhaps you are already doing some of this yourself.

A craftsman working with thuya wood may remind you of the forests and the long relationship between material and human hands.

A piece of silver may take you back to Tiznit.

An argan product may recall the dry landscapes of the southwest and the people whose livelihoods depend upon the tree.

A woven textile may make you wonder about wool, dyes, plants, trade and the hands that carried the pattern from memory to loom.

A plate of fish reminds us that here the Atlantic itself enters daily life.

You no longer see only the object.

You begin to see the relationships behind it.

Perhaps this is why we have left this day relatively open.

Travel also needs silence.

It needs an afternoon with no monument to reach.

A conversation that was not scheduled.

A doorway we enter simply because we were curious.

A cup of tea that lasts longer than expected.

Time to sit beside the ocean and allow memories from the road to return in whatever order they choose.

There is another reason Essaouira is a good place for this.

For much of our journey we have been moving through landscapes where people learned to adapt themselves to the land.

Here we are reminded that people also learned to live with the sea.

The fisherman reads weather differently from the farmer.

The sailor understands wind differently from the shepherd.

The caravan looked toward the horizon and saw a road.

The sailor did the same.

Different environments.

The same human curiosity about what lies beyond them.

By evening we may return once more to the harbor or the ramparts.

The sun lowers toward the Atlantic.

Tomorrow we begin the final stage of our expedition.

There will be time then to think about departure.

Today, we are still here.

And perhaps after travelling through Morocco for twenty-one days, we no longer need to ask constantly what there is to see.

Perhaps we can ask a different question:

How does it feel to be here?

Because somewhere along a good journey, the traveler stops merely passing through.

For a little while, we belong.

Overnight in Essaouira.

This morning we leave Essaouira and begin our final journey north along the Atlantic toward Casablanca.

There are no great discoveries planned today.

Morocco has already given us plenty.

We began twenty-two days ago in Tangier, standing between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, with the Rif Mountains ahead of us and most of Morocco still unknown.

Then we travelled.

Through the Rif to Chefchaouen.

Through Volubilis and Moulay Idriss to Fez.

Across the Middle Atlas and into the Sahara.

Along oases and caravan roads.

Through the Draa, Tamegroute and the remote country around Tata.

Across the Anti-Atlas to Guelmim and Tafraoute.

Through the Souss.

Back into the High Atlas.

Down to Marrakech.

And finally, back to the Atlantic.

But perhaps a journey should not be measured only by the distance travelled.

We followed water until we understood that an oasis was a human achievement.

We followed roads until we discovered that caravans carried knowledge as well as goods.

We looked at geology until a rock became soil, clay became pottery and a mineral became ornament.

We entered remote places and learned never to confuse remoteness with ignorance.

We discovered that traditions themselves can travel.

We stood among rocks hundreds of millions of years old and noticed that somewhere between them, someone had planted an almond tree.

And it grew.

Perhaps Morocco did reveal itself gradually after all.

Not completely.

No country ever does.

That may be the most important discovery of the journey.

There should always be something left unexplained.

Something that makes us curious enough to return.

As we travel north along the Atlantic, towns, fields and fishing villages pass beside us. There is no need now to interpret everything we see.

We know how to look.

Somewhere along these twenty-two days, Morocco stopped being a collection of destinations.

The mountains began speaking to the valleys.

The valleys spoke to the oasis.

The oasis spoke to the caravan.

The caravan spoke to the market.

The market spoke to the city.

And the people connected them all.

Perhaps that is the Morocco we came looking for.

Not a country of isolated monuments and beautiful landscapes, but a country of relationships.

By afternoon we reach Casablanca and settle into our hotel.

But our expedition is not quite finished.

Tonight we gather one last time around the table for our farewell dinner.

For twenty-two days we have travelled together. We have shared long roads and mountain paths, meals and cups of mint tea, unexpected encounters, laughter, fatigue, silence and discoveries that were never written into the itinerary.

Somewhere along the road, a collection of travelers became travelling companions.

So tonight is not another sightseeing experience.

It belongs to us.

We eat together, remember the road behind us, exchange stories and perhaps discover that everyone has travelled through a slightly different Morocco.

Tomorrow we will begin going our separate ways.

Tonight, we are still together.

After breakfast, we arrange your transfer to Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport according to your flight schedule.

There is nothing more we need to teach you about Morocco.

The journey has done its work.

Perhaps you will leave with photographs, a carpet, a piece of pottery, some argan oil or a little desert sand stubbornly hiding somewhere in your luggage.

But we hope you carry something less visible too.

A different way of seeing.

A question you did not have when you arrived.

The memory of someone whose name you may eventually forget but whose kindness you will remember.

And perhaps the understanding that Morocco cannot really be discovered in one journey.

Twenty-two days ago, we welcomed you as travelers.

This morning, we say goodbye as friends.

Or perhaps, in the Moroccan way, we should not say goodbye at all.

Bslama, wa ila al-liqaa — go in peace, until we meet again.
