Three days Tour to Morocco from Spain

Your journey begins as you step off the ferry in Tangier, where your Sarah Tours guide will meet you at the port.

Spain is now behind us, but its relationship with Morocco will follow us throughout these three days.

We leave Tangier and travel south through the landscapes of northern Morocco toward Fez. Along the way, we will make three important stops: Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes.

In a remarkably short distance, we will travel through centuries of Moroccan history.

Volubilis — Before Morocco Was Morocco

Our first major stop is Volubilis.

Long before Fez or Marrakech existed, this fertile region supported one of the important cities of Roman Mauretania Tingitana.

Walk among the remains and the city slowly becomes readable again: houses, mosaics, baths, olive presses, streets, public buildings and the great ceremonial structures of Roman urban life.

But Volubilis is interesting not simply because Romans were here.

Look around.

The surrounding land helps explain why people settled here in the first place.

Fertile plains, agricultural possibilities, water and routes of communication made this valuable country long before modern borders existed.

Civilizations change.

Geography remains.

Moulay Idriss — A New Chapter

From Volubilis we can see the hills around Moulay Idriss, and within minutes we move forward several centuries.

Here the story changes.

Moulay Idriss I arrived in Morocco in the late eighth century and established himself among local Amazigh communities. His presence helped begin the Idrisid chapter of Moroccan history and the emergence of an Islamic Moroccan state.

The proximity of Volubilis and Moulay Idriss is remarkable.

Two places.

Two civilizations.

Only a few kilometers apart.

This is one of the pleasures of travelling through Morocco: history is not always arranged neatly in separate museums. Sometimes centuries live almost beside one another.

Meknes — Imperial Ambition

We continue toward Meknes, one of Morocco's historic imperial cities.

The city reached its great imperial period under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, when monumental gates, walls, granaries, stables and palaces expressed the ambitions of a powerful Moroccan state.

Our visit introduces another Morocco again—not Roman, not early Idrisid, but imperial.

By now the journey has carried us through nearly two thousand years without travelling very far geographically.

Then we continue to Fez.

Fez — Where the Journey Comes Alive

By evening we reach Fez.

If Volubilis allowed us to walk through the remains of a civilization, Fez gives us something different.

Here, history is still inhabited

Today we enter Fez.

Yesterday we travelled through history. At Volubilis, much of that history survived in stone. In Fez, history still wakes up every morning and goes to work.

We begin with an introduction to the city from outside its walls, including the Royal Palace gates and a panoramic view across the medina.

From above, Fez may appear almost impossible to understand.

Thousands of roofs gather inside the old walls. Minarets rise between them. Narrow streets disappear beneath houses. Somewhere inside are mosques, schools, workshops, markets, bakeries, fountains and family homes.

Then we walk in.

And the city begins to explain itself.

A City Made for Walking

The medina of Fez was built for people, animals and human scale long before the arrival of cars.

Its narrow streets provide shade. Neighborhoods gather around mosques, fountains, ovens and small markets. Houses turn inward around courtyards, protecting family life from the movement outside.

Everything has a relationship with something else.

Water shaped where people lived.

Markets grew around what people needed.

Crafts gathered where materials, water and trade made them possible.

Religious institutions became places of worship, education and social life.

Fez was not designed all at once.

It grew like a living organism.

Al Qarawiyyin — Knowledge at the Heart of the City

Eventually our walk brings us into the world surrounding Al Qarawiyyin.

Founded in the ninth century by Fatima al-Fihri, Al Qarawiyyin became one of the great centers of learning in the Islamic world.

Its presence tells us something important about Fez.

This was never merely a commercial city.

People came here to trade, certainly, but they also came to study.

Theology, law, Arabic language and other branches of knowledge were transmitted here across generations, attracting scholars and students from Morocco and far beyond.

Around Al Qarawiyyin grew another kind of economy: booksellers, scribes, teachers, students, craftsmen and the charitable institutions that helped sustain religious and intellectual life.

Knowledge itself became part of the city.

Al Attarine — When Beauty Has a Purpose

Nearby, the Al Attarine Madrasa allows us to see how architecture, craftsmanship and learning came together.

Look closely.

Zellij does not exist separately from geometry.

Carved cedar does not exist separately from the forest.

Plaster does not exist separately from earth and minerals.

Calligraphy carries language into architecture.

The craftsman transforms materials, but he also carries knowledge.

This is something Fez teaches particularly well:

Beauty is not separated from function, and craftsmanship is not separated from intelligence.

Seffarine — Listen Before You Look

As we continue through the medina, we may hear Seffarine Square before we see it.

The rhythmic hammering of metal has echoed through this part of Fez for generations.

Here craftsmen shape copper and other metals into objects for everyday life.

Watch the hands.

A maâlem may perform an action that appears effortless, but what looks simple may contain decades of repetition.

This is one of the great pleasures of Fez.

Knowledge is not found only in books.

Some knowledge lives in the hands.

Earth, Water and Fire

We also encounter another great tradition of Fez: pottery and ceramics.

Clay is only earth.

Yet add water, human hands, minerals, pigment and fire, and earth becomes something that can enter a house and remain there for generations.

A bowl.

A plate.

A tile.

A fountain.

A wall of zellij.

What visitors often admire simply as decoration is really the meeting of geology and human knowledge.

The material came from the land.

The maâlem gave it another life.

The Andalusian Memory

As we move through Fez, we also encounter reminders of the movement of people between Morocco and al-Andalus.

One of the historic quarters of the city became associated with Andalusian families who crossed from Iberia centuries ago, bringing memories, skills and traditions with them.

For travelers who arrived from Spain only yesterday, this gives the journey another dimension.

The Strait of Gibraltar was never simply a border.

People crossed it in both directions.

They carried language.

Music.

Architecture.

Food.

Craftsmanship.

Ideas.

And memory.

Some of what you encountered in Andalusia has roots on this side of the water.

And some of what you encounter in Morocco carries memories of the other shore.

Meeting Fez

Our day continues through the souks, workshops and neighborhoods of the medina.

There will be monuments to see, certainly.

But Fez is not a museum.

People are buying vegetables.

A baker is pulling bread from an oven.

A craftsman is repairing something rather than replacing it.

A child is walking home.

Someone is carrying goods through a street that has carried goods for centuries.

And somewhere, inevitably, someone will offer tea.

That may be the most important moment of the day.

Because after all the architecture, history and craftsmanship, Morocco finally becomes human when we sit with someone.

Yesterday we crossed the Strait and travelled through centuries.

Today we slowed down enough to enter one city.

And perhaps that is the paradox of Fez:

The deeper we enter the medina, the larger Morocco becomes.

Dinner and overnight in Fez.

This morning we leave Fez and travel north through the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen.

The landscape changes again.

The great inland city gradually gives way to mountain country, cultivated valleys, olive groves and villages scattered across the slopes.

Then Chefchaouen appears beneath the mountains.

Chefchaouen — More Than Blue

Chefchaouen has become famous around the world for its blue-painted streets.

They are beautiful.

But we did not come all this way simply to photograph a color.

Founded in the late fifteenth century, Chefchaouen grew during a period of enormous movement across the western Mediterranean. Muslims and Jews displaced from al-Andalus settled in northern Morocco, bringing with them memories, skills, customs and ways of building that became part of the life of towns such as Chefchaouen.

For travelers returning to Spain today, that history matters.

We walk through the medina at an unhurried pace.

Small streets climb and descend with the mountain. Houses gather around the contours of the land. At Outa el-Hammam, the kasbah and mosque recall the historic center of the town, while workshops, markets and cafés remind us that Chefchaouen is not simply a beautiful backdrop.

It is a community.

We may continue toward Ras el-Ma, where water descending from the mountains has long entered the daily life of the town.

And by now, after Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Fez, perhaps we know enough to ask the question ourselves:

Why here?

Why did people settle precisely in this place?

Once again, geography gives part of the answer.

Mountains offered protection.

Water made settlement possible.

Agriculture supported life.

Routes connected the town with other communities.

And history brought people carrying knowledge from elsewhere.

A place is rarely created by one thing.

Across the Mountains

After time to explore Chefchaouen, we continue through the Rif toward Tangier.

The road itself becomes part of our final day.

Three days ago, Tangier was our entrance to Morocco.

Now it is our way back to Spain.

But between those two moments we have travelled through Roman ruins, a sacred town, an imperial city, the living medina of Fez and the mountain world of Chefchaouen.

Three days are not enough to know Morocco.

Perhaps three weeks would not be enough.

That was never our promise.

Our purpose was to open a door.

Back to the Strait

By afternoon we reach Tangier Port in time for your ferry to Tarifa.

And here our little journey completes its circle.

Only a few kilometers of water separate Morocco from Spain.

Yet during these three days we have discovered how often those waters were crossed.

By merchants.

Travelers.

Scholars.

Migrants.

Exiles.

Diplomats.

Pilgrims.

Families.

Ideas crossed with them.

So did music, architecture, food, language, craftsmanship and memory.

The Strait separated two shores.

It also connected them.

As the ferry carries you back toward Spain, perhaps the coastline ahead will look slightly different from the one you left three days ago.

Not because Spain has changed.

Because now you have seen something of the world on the other side.

You came to Morocco for three days.
