Toubkal Hiking Tour

Welcome to Marrakech.

Upon arrival at Marrakech Airport, you will be met by your Sarah Tours representative and transferred to your hotel. There will be time to settle in, rest after your journey and become accustomed to your new surroundings.

Later in the afternoon, we begin gently.

There will be plenty of time to explore Marrakech when we return from the mountains. Today, we want to understand where the city stands in relation to the journey ahead.

Look south.

Beyond Marrakech rises the High Atlas, and somewhere among those mountains is Toubkal, the highest summit in North Africa and our destination in the days ahead.

But the Atlas is much more than a dramatic horizon.

The Mountains Give Before We Reach Them

Our introduction begins at the Menara Gardens.

At first sight, Menara appears to be a peaceful landscape of olive trees, gardens, a pavilion and a large reflecting basin.

But look at the water.

It tells a much larger story.

For centuries, water captured in the High Atlas and carried toward the plains through an ingenious network of channels and underground khettaras helped sustain Marrakech, its gardens and the agriculture surrounding it.

The mountains we are preparing to walk through are therefore already here.

Their water reached Marrakech before we did.

This is our first lesson in the High Atlas.

Mountains are not isolated from the civilization below them. Snow, rain, springs and streams descend toward valleys and plains, supporting orchards, fields, villages and cities along the way.

Tomorrow we begin travelling in the opposite direction.

We will follow the water toward its source.

An Introduction to Marrakech

From Menara, we continue toward the old city for a gentle introduction to Marrakech.

We see the Koutoubia rising above the medina, an enduring landmark of the Almohad city, before entering the older quarters on foot.

There is no need to see everything today.

Instead, we allow Marrakech to introduce itself gradually: walls of warm earth, gardens hidden behind doors, craftsmen at work, the movement of the souks and finally Jemaa el-Fna, where mountain people, merchants, musicians, storytellers, travelers and city dwellers have encountered one another for generations.

Tomorrow, the landscape changes completely.

The streets become roads.

The roads become mountain paths.

Vehicles eventually give way to feet and mules.

And Marrakech, which tonight surrounds us with movement and sound, will gradually disappear behind the mountains.

For now, enjoy the city.

Tomorrow we walk toward the Atlas.

Overnight in Marrakech.

This morning we leave Marrakech and travel south toward the High Atlas.

Yesterday, from Menara, we looked toward the mountains and followed their water down to the plains.

Today we travel in the opposite direction.

As the city recedes, the land begins to rise. The broad plain gradually narrows into valleys, villages appear along the slopes, and the mountains that yesterday formed a distant horizon begin to surround us.

Asni — The Mountain Market

When the weekly market is operating, we stop at Asni.

A rural market tells us a great deal about the country around it.

People come down from surrounding villages to buy and sell vegetables, fruit, grain, household goods and other necessities. News travels with them. So do relationships.

For us, Asni is also where the logistics of our trek become human.

We meet members of the local mountain team and the muleteers who will accompany and support us during the journey. Provisions are organized, loads prepared and balanced, and the mules become part of our small travelling community.

This is not simply transportation.

In mountain country, the mule has served for generations where roads could not. It carried food, building materials, harvests and household necessities between communities connected by paths rather than highways.

By employing local muleteers and purchasing provisions locally whenever practical, our journey participates, however modestly, in the economy of the mountains through which we travel.

Then comes tea.

There is always time for tea.

It gives us a moment to meet one another before we begin depending upon one another.

Imi Oughlad — Where Walking Begins

We continue toward Imi Oughlad, in the Aït Mizane region, where the vehicle can take us no farther along our chosen route.

Here we begin walking.

There is something important about that transition.

Until now, Morocco has been passing outside our window.

From here, we move at the speed of the landscape.

The trail climbs toward the Tacht Pass, carrying us through increasingly rugged country and stands of juniper. Villages appear against the mountainsides, their position revealing how carefully people have adapted settlement to terrain, water and cultivable land.

At walking pace, details become visible.

A terrace cut into a slope.

A water channel.

A loaded mule.

A woman returning from a field.

A house built largely from materials found in the surrounding landscape.

An orchard occupying the small piece of earth where soil and water have made cultivation possible.

The mountains may look wild from a distance.

Walk through them and you discover that people have been reading this landscape for generations.

Our First Night in the Mountains

We pause along the trail for lunch near the springs before continuing toward our destination.

Tonight we stay in a local Amazigh home.

The accommodation is simple, and that is part of the experience.

We are no longer observing mountain villages from a vehicle or photographing them from the roadside. For one evening, we enter the rhythm of a household and experience something of the hospitality that has long accompanied travel through these valleys.

There will be food.

Tea.

Conversation when language allows it—and smiles when it does not.

Outside, the mountains settle into evening.

Tomorrow we walk deeper into them.

Today we left Marrakech behind.

We met the people who will share our trail, placed our provisions on the backs of mules and took our first steps into the High Atlas.

The trek has begun, but so has something else: we are no longer merely looking at the mountains. We have entered their life.

Overnight in a local mountain home.

We wake this morning in the mountains.

The sounds are different from Marrakech. There is no city beginning its day outside our window. Instead, there may be the movement of animals, voices from the household, water somewhere nearby and the preparations of our mountain team.

After breakfast, we shoulder our daypacks and continue deeper into the High Atlas.

By now we are beginning to understand something important.

A mountain is not only something to climb. It is something that gives.

Following the Water

Our trail climbs toward the mountain passes and continues through juniper forests, valleys and flowing springs.

Yesterday we saw water reaching the gardens of Marrakech.

Today we encounter it much closer to its source.

Here a spring emerging from rock may become a stream.

The stream feeds vegetation.

Vegetation supports animals.

Farther below, water is guided toward terraces, orchards and villages.

What eventually appears effortless in a garden has travelled a long way to get there.

For mountain communities, understanding water has never been an abstract environmental concern.

It is knowledge necessary for life.

Where does it appear?

When does it flow?

How can it be shared?

What can be cultivated with the amount available?

Where can a village survive?

The landscape has been asking these questions for generations, and people have learned to answer them.

The Forest Is Part of the Story

We continue through stands of juniper and thuya, stopping occasionally simply to look around us.

Trees at these elevations are more than scenery.

They protect soil, hold moisture, provide habitat and have historically supplied mountain communities with useful materials. Their presence also reminds us how fragile these environments can be.

A forest takes years to grow.

A careless traveler can leave evidence of his presence in minutes.

This is why walking responsibly through the Atlas means more than carrying our rubbish away. It means understanding that we are guests in an environment upon which other lives depend.

The Intelligence of a Mountain Path

As we walk through the Tikkent and Azzaden valleys, another feature of mountain life becomes increasingly obvious: the path itself.

Long before roads entered these valleys, paths connected people.

They led to neighboring villages, markets, fields, grazing areas, forests, water sources and mountain passes.

A path often follows the intelligence of generations.

It knows where the slope is manageable.

It knows where water can be found.

It avoids what cannot easily be crossed.

And sometimes it takes what appears to us to be the longer way because experience has discovered that the shortest distance is not always the wisest route.

Our local guides know these trails not simply as lines on a map.

They know them through use.

Lunch Beside the Mountain

We stop for an open-air lunch near the forest and mountain water.

Food tastes different after several hours of walking.

It also acquires another meaning when we remember how it reached us.

Somebody purchased it.

Someone packed it.

A mule carried part of it.

Our mountain team prepared it.

And the landscape provides the place in which we share it.

This small meal reminds us that even in apparent wilderness, we travel through relationships.

Toward Tizi Oussem

During the afternoon we continue toward Tizi Oussem.

The walking has given us time to notice how the High Atlas changes from one valley to another and how human settlement responds to those changes.

We are also gradually gaining elevation.

Toubkal still waits ahead, but there is no need to hurry toward it.

The body is adjusting.

The legs are learning the trail.

And our eyes are learning the mountains.

Tonight we settle into our mountain camp near Tizi Oussem.

There are few luxuries here, but there is something increasingly difficult to find in ordinary life: darkness when night arrives, the sound of the natural world around us, and enough stillness to realize how far we have walked from the city.

Tomorrow the journey changes again.

We begin leaving some of the inhabited valleys behind and move toward the sacred mountain landscape of Sidi Chamharouch.

For tonight, we rest.

Yesterday we entered the mountains.

Today we began to understand how life flows through them.

Overnight near Tizi Oussem.

We leave Tizi Oussem after breakfast and begin climbing toward the Mezzik Pass.

By now our bodies have found something of the rhythm of mountain walking.

We climb slowly.

We breathe.

We stop when necessary.

And with every gain in elevation, the landscape changes around us.

From the pass, the valleys we have been walking through begin to reveal themselves from another perspective. Villages become smaller below us. Terraces follow the contours of the mountainsides. Paths that seemed substantial while we walked them become thin lines across an enormous landscape.

From here, one begins to understand just how carefully human life has fitted itself into the geography of the High Atlas.

We then descend toward the Aït Mizane Valley and eventually begin climbing again toward Sidi Chamharouch.

When Landscape Becomes Sacred

Mountains have rarely been only physical objects to the people who live among them.

They provide water.

They influence weather.

They determine routes.

They protect and isolate.

They can sustain life, and they can make life extremely difficult.

It is therefore unsurprising that human beings have also given mountains spiritual meaning.

Sidi Chamharouch is part of that sacred geography.

The site, marked dramatically by a white-painted rock beside the mountain stream, has long been associated in local tradition with Sidi Chamharouch and visited by people seeking blessing, healing and spiritual assistance.

For the trekker, it lies on the route toward Toubkal.

For the pilgrim, it can mean something entirely different.

We happen to be walking the same path, but we may not be making the same journey.

That distinction deserves our respect.

A Different Kind of Knowledge

We do not come here to judge belief.

Nor do we need to romanticize it.

As travelers, our privilege is simply to recognize that the landscape through which we walk has meanings that existed long before trekking became an international pastime.

A spring may be water to one person and blessing to another.

A mountain may be geology to one person and sacred presence to another.

A path may lead us toward a summit while carrying somebody else toward prayer.

None of these meanings necessarily cancels the others.

They tell us that human beings inhabit landscapes with more than their bodies.

They inhabit them with memory, belief and imagination as well.

Toward the High Country

As we continue upward, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse.

The cultivated mountain we encountered during our first days begins giving way to the high country.

There are fewer houses.

Fewer trees.

Less soil.

Rock becomes more dominant.

The scale of the mountains seems to grow as evidence of human settlement diminishes.

Toubkal is drawing closer.

But the mountain has already taught us something before we reach its summit.

We began below among fields, orchards and villages.

We followed water.

We walked through forests.

We crossed paths made by generations.

And today we encounter another layer of mountain life: the relationship between landscape and the unseen.

Tonight we rest in the high mountain environment, preparing for the next stage of our ascent.

Tomorrow the conditions become more demanding.

The villages will be behind us.

The vegetation will thin further.

And the mountain itself will increasingly determine our pace.

For now, we rest beside a place where two kinds of travelers have passed for generations:

those seeking the heights,

and those seeking something that cannot be measured by altitude.

Overnight in the Toubkal high-country area.

Today we climb Toubkal.

We begin early, when the mountain is still quiet and the air is cool.

By now we have left much of the inhabited Atlas behind us. The orchards, terraces, villages and forests of the lower valleys have given way to a harsher landscape of rock, scree and open mountain.

Up here, nature sets the terms.

There is little vegetation and little shelter. The air is thinner. Our pace becomes slower and more deliberate.

We follow our mountain guide toward the Toubkal high-country refuge, where we prepare for the final ascent.

The Mountain Decides the Pace

At 4,167 metres, Jebel Toubkal is the highest summit in North Africa.

The normal ascent is not technically difficult in favorable conditions, but altitude changes everything.

There is no reason to hurry.

We walk steadily, allowing the body to adjust and following the judgment of our mountain guide, whose knowledge of the route, weather and seasonal conditions is more important today than any timetable.

In winter and during periods of snow or ice, the mountain becomes a different environment altogether and appropriate equipment and experience are required.

Reaching the summit is our objective. Returning safely is our responsibility.

The mountain always has the final word.

The Summit

As we climb higher, the world below begins to open.

Eventually, if weather, trail conditions and the strength of the group allow, we reach the summit of Mount Toubkal.

There is a particular satisfaction in standing at the highest point of a journey travelled largely on foot.

But before looking toward the horizon, look down.

Somewhere below are the valleys through which we have walked.

The villages.

The springs.

The forests.

The terraces.

The orchards.

The paths.

The people who welcomed us.

From here they may appear very small.

Yet without that inhabited world below, our journey to this summit would not have been possible.

Our guides brought their knowledge.

Muleteers carried provisions through the mountains.

Villages gave us shelter.

Water sustained us.

Paths created by generations showed us the way.

Nobody reaches Toubkal entirely alone.

The Highest Point Is Not the Whole Journey

We take time on the summit to absorb the immense landscape of the High Atlas before beginning our descent.

And perhaps now we understand Toubkal differently from the way we understood it when we first saw the mountains from Marrakech.

Then, it was a summit.

A number on a map.

4,167 metres.

Now there is a world beneath that number.

The mountain has people.

It has paths.

It has memory.

It has sacred places.

It has an economy.

It gives water to valleys and ultimately to the plains beyond them.

The summit is the highest point of our journey.

But it may not necessarily be its deepest.

Returning to the Refuge

After celebrating our ascent, we descend carefully toward the refuge.

Going down demands attention too. Loose rock, tired legs and altitude remind us that reaching the summit is only half the day's responsibility.

By the time we return, the simplest things become luxuries.

A place to sit.

Warm food.

Water.

Removing our boots.

Conversation with the people who shared the climb.

And rest.

Tomorrow we descend toward the inhabited valleys again.

Trees will return.

Water will become more abundant.

Then orchards.

Houses.

Roads.

And eventually Marrakech.

Tonight, however, we remain high in the Atlas beneath the mountain we came here to climb.

We reached for the summit.

The journey taught us to look below it.

Overnight at the Toubkal mountain refuge.

This morning we wake beneath Toubkal and begin our descent.

Yesterday our attention was directed upward.

Today we look down.

At first, the landscape remains austere. Rock dominates. Vegetation is sparse, and our feet follow the mountain trail carefully toward lower elevations.

But gradually something begins to change.

Life Returns

As we descend, the mountain gives things back to us.

First, more vegetation appears.

Then water becomes increasingly present.

Trees return.

The valleys become greener.

Eventually we see cultivated terraces, orchards and houses again.

After several days of walking through the High Atlas, these things no longer appear incidental.

We understand why the village occupies that particular slope.

Why cultivation gathers around water.

Why a path follows one contour rather than another.

Why the mule remains useful.

Why people plant wherever mountain, soil and water give them an opportunity.

We are descending through the same landscape we entered days ago, but we are not seeing it with the same eyes.

Sidi Chamharouch — Passing Again

Our descent takes us back through the mountain landscape around Sidi Chamharouch.

On the way up, our attention was naturally drawn toward Toubkal.

Now there is less urgency.

The summit is behind us.

The pilgrim still comes for reasons different from the trekker. Water continues downhill. Muleteers continue along the paths. Mountain life continues whether or not someone has reached the summit.

That may be one of the quiet lessons of climbing a mountain.

For us, yesterday was extraordinary.

For the mountain, it was simply another day.

Back to Imlil

Eventually we return to Imlil and the inhabited valleys.

Here we say goodbye to the mountain team who has accompanied us.

Our guides and muleteers were never simply part of the logistics.

They carried knowledge.

They knew the paths, the weather, the water and the mountain. They helped transport our provisions and equipment, prepared meals and made possible a journey that from the outside can easily appear to be an individual achievement.

We climbed with our own legs.

But we travelled within a network of human cooperation.

That deserves our gratitude.

There may be handshakes, photographs, laughter and perhaps another glass of tea before we part.

Then comes a strange moment.

We get into a vehicle.

After days of measuring distance with our feet, the road suddenly moves very quickly.

Returning to Marrakech

We leave the High Atlas and descend toward the plains.

Marrakech gradually returns.

Traffic.

Buildings.

Shops.

People.

The sounds of the city.

And eventually our hotel.

Yet the connection between Marrakech and the mountains is much clearer to us now.

On our first day, we stood beside the Menara basin and spoke about water arriving from the Atlas.

We have now walked much closer to where that journey begins.

We have followed streams, crossed valleys, walked beside orchards and climbed beyond the vegetation to the high mountain itself.

The circle is almost complete.

Tomorrow Marrakech will be waiting for us.

But we will enter it differently.

Because now, when we see water in a garden, fruit in a market or goods arriving from the countryside, we may think about the landscape beyond the city that helped produce them.

Tonight, however, there is a hotel room.

A shower.

A comfortable bed.

And legs that have earned their rest.

We went into the mountains looking for Toubkal.

We return carrying much more than a summit.

Overnight in Marrakech.

This morning there is no mountain pass to cross.

No mule to load.

No summit waiting above us.

After breakfast, we return to Marrakech on foot—but this time through the doors of its history, craftsmanship and daily life.

A week ago, Marrakech was our starting point. We looked toward the High Atlas and spoke about the water flowing from those mountains toward the plains.

Since then, we have walked in those mountains.

We followed their streams.

We crossed their valleys.

We slept in their villages.

We shared the paths of muleteers and pilgrims.

We climbed beyond the forests and vegetation until almost nothing remained but rock, sky and Toubkal.

Today we return to the city carrying that experience with us.

Marrakech Looks Different Now

We begin with some of the great landmarks of the old city, including the Koutoubia and Bahia Palace.

At Bahia, architecture brings us back into another kind of human landscape.

Courtyards provide light and air.

Gardens bring vegetation inside the house.

Water cools and gives life.

Plaster, cedar, stone, pigments and tile are transformed by craftsmen into architecture.

After several days watching mountain people work intelligently with the materials available to them, perhaps we recognize the same principle here in a more elaborate form.

People build with what the land gives them—and culture teaches them what to do with it.

Into the Souks

Then we enter the souks.

Before the trek, they might simply have appeared as a maze of colorful shops.

Now we can look differently.

Leather came from an animal.

Wool was once on a sheep.

A basket began as a plant.

Wood came from a tree.

Clay came from the earth.

Pigments began as minerals, plants or other natural materials.

And none of them became an object by themselves.

Between the raw material and the finished object stands a human being with knowledge.

The carpenter.

The weaver.

The leather worker.

The metalworker.

The potter.

The dyer.

The maâlem.

Once again, some knowledge lives in the hands.

The mountains taught us that lesson through survival.

The souks teach it through craftsmanship.

From Mountain to Market

Marrakech has always depended upon relationships extending far beyond its walls.

People came from the Atlas and surrounding countryside carrying agricultural produce, animals, wool, herbs, timber, crafts and other goods.

They returned carrying things their communities needed.

Markets therefore did more than exchange merchandise.

They connected worlds.

The mountain needed the city.

The city needed the mountain.

Neither existed entirely by itself.

This is something travel sometimes allows us to see particularly well:

a place is rarely just a place. It is a web of relationships.

Time to Wander

The afternoon belongs partly to you.

There will be time to explore the souks, visit workshops, look for something to take home, sit over a glass of mint tea or simply enjoy walking without needing to reach a mountain refuge before nightfall.

And after several days in hiking clothes, perhaps there is also pleasure in doing absolutely nothing strenuous.

That, too, is part of travelling well.

Jemaa el-Fna — Back Among the Crowd

As afternoon moves toward evening, we return to Jemaa el-Fna.

After the silence and enormous scale of the mountains, the square can feel almost overwhelming.

Voices overlap.

Food cooks.

Musicians play.

People bargain.

Families stroll.

Travelers watch.

Smoke rises from the food stalls as evening settles over Marrakech.

For centuries, this great public space has brought together people from the city, the mountains, the plains, the Sahara and places much farther away.

And tonight we join them.

Our final evening is celebrated with a farewell dinner in Marrakech.

Not simply because we climbed Toubkal.

We did.

And that deserves celebration.

But we also walked through a mountain world that existed long before we arrived and will continue after we leave.

We met some of the people who make their lives there.

We followed their paths.

We depended upon their knowledge.

We learned where water travels.

And perhaps we discovered that the greatest reward of walking slowly is not simply seeing more.

It is learning how things belong together.

Tonight Marrakech is full of life around us.

Tomorrow we go home.

Farewell dinner and overnight in Marrakech.

This morning, after breakfast, there may be time for one last coffee, a quiet walk or simply a few moments to enjoy Marrakech before departure.

At the appropriate time, you will be met at your hotel and transferred to Marrakech Airport for your onward flight.

Eight days ago, the High Atlas was a line of mountains on the horizon.

Then we walked into it.

We followed its water, crossed its valleys, entered its villages, shared tea and food, walked beside muleteers, passed through forests and sacred places, and climbed until the cultivated world disappeared beneath us.

At 4,167 metres, we stood on the summit of Toubkal.

But altitude was only one measure of the journey.

Perhaps what remains will be something smaller:

The sound of water beside a mountain path.

Bread shared after a long day's walk.

A muleteer quietly balancing a load.

Tea in a village home.

The silence above the tree line.

Or the first sight of Marrakech returning after days in the mountains.

These are the things travel sometimes leaves behind.

We came to climb a mountain.

Along the way, we discovered some of the people, knowledge and relationships that have made life possible around it for generations.

And perhaps that is why we walk.

Not only to reach somewhere new, but to return seeing differently.
