About This Tour

Overview

An Overland Journey Through Olive Groves, Cedar Forests & Mountain Communities

There is another Morocco beyond the great cities and the Sahara.

It is a greener Morocco, rising through the hills and mountains of the north: a country of ancient olive groves, fig trees, cedar forests, grazing lands, springs and high plateaus, where villages have grown within landscapes that have sustained their communities for generations.

Morocco's Green Highlands is a journey into this quieter country.

Beginning in Rabat, we turn inland toward Ouazzane and the Jbala Mountains, where olive trees cover the hillsides and village life still follows the rhythms of agriculture and the seasons. From here, we travel and walk through the Rif highlands, following pastoral paths through farming communities, forests and mountain country rarely included in conventional Morocco itineraries.

As we move eastward, the landscape changes around us. The journey takes us through the Taza country, the remarkable geographical passage between the Rif and the Middle Atlas, before continuing into the higher forests and pastoral lands around Bouiblane and Marmoucha. Here cedar, carob and mountain vegetation replace the olive country of the north, and shepherding and seasonal movement become increasingly visible in the life of the highlands.

But this is not simply a hiking tour.

Walking allows us to enter the landscape slowly enough to understand it. We encounter farmers, shepherds and mountain communities; visit villages and local markets; camp beneath the trees and open sky; and discover the zawiyas and sacred places that reveal another dimension of rural Moroccan life.

Throughout the journey, the landscape itself becomes our guide.

The olive tells us where people settled.

The fig speaks of the household, the harvest and the seasons.

And the cedar tells us how high we have climbed.

Eventually, the mountains lead us toward Sefrou and Fez, where the rural paths of the highlands meet one of Morocco's great centers of culture, spirituality and exchange.

This is not the Morocco that demands attention with grand monuments or dramatic spectacle.

Its attraction is quieter.

You discover it while walking beneath an old tree, sharing tea in a village, listening to the silence of a forest, or looking across a plateau where the horizon seems to have no urgency.

Morocco's Green Highlands invites us to travel slowly enough for this other Morocco to reveal itself.

Highlights

  • Walk through the olive-covered hills of the Jbala country, where farming, village life and mountain traditions have developed together over generations.

  • Follow old footpaths through the Rif Mountains, crossing cultivated valleys, forests and remote highland communities rarely visited on conventional Morocco journeys.

  • Discover Ouazzane and the spiritual traditions of Morocco's northern mountains, where zawiyas and pilgrimage have long formed part of rural life.

  • Camp beneath open skies and among forests where the landscape, rather than the hotel, becomes our home for the night.

  • Cross the remarkable Taza country, where the Rif Mountains and Middle Atlas create one of Morocco's great natural passages between east and west.

  • Walk through cedar, carob and mountain forests and discover how vegetation changes as we climb from cultivated hills toward the higher pastoral country.

  • Travel through the Bouiblane and Marmoucha highlands, where shepherding, seasonal movement and mountain agriculture continue to shape everyday life.

  • Share tea and conversation along the way with farmers, shepherds and mountain families when the journey naturally brings us together.

  • Follow the changing landscape through olive and fig country toward the great cedar forests—the trees themselves quietly telling us where we are.

  • Descend through Sefrou and the country south of Fez, where mountain paths, orchards, markets and old routes eventually lead us into Morocco's cultural and spiritual capital.

  • Travel through a Morocco that does not announce itself with famous monuments. Its beauty reveals itself slowly—in a forest, an olive grove, a village path, a shared glass of tea, and the silence of the high plateau.
