Upon arrival at Fez Saïss Airport, you will be welcomed by your Sarah Tours representative and transferred to your accommodation. Travelers already staying in Fez will meet the group and local guide before beginning the day's exploration.

Start with a panoramic introduction to Fez, Morocco's oldest Imperial City and one of the great historic centers of learning, craftsmanship, trade, and spiritual life in the Islamic world. Explore Fez el-Jdid, including the Royal Palace gates and the Mellah, the city's historic Jewish quarter, before viewing the ancient medina from the surrounding heights.

Then enter Fez el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed old city, on foot. Behind its walls lies an intricate urban world of neighborhoods, mosques, madrasas, fountains, markets, workshops, bakeries, shrines, and homes connected through thousands of narrow streets and passageways.

With your local guide, explore important landmarks including the beautifully decorated Al Attarine Madrasa, Seffarine Square, where metalworkers continue a centuries-old craft tradition, and the surroundings of Al Qarawiyyin, founded in the ninth century and long associated with scholarship, religious learning, and the intellectual life of Fez.

Visit the pottery and ceramics workshops for which Fez is renowned and observe artisans working with clay, painted decoration, and traditional zellij tilework. Throughout the day, your guide will help you understand not simply the monuments of Fez, but the relationships between craftsmanship, commerce, religion, water, neighborhoods, and community life that have allowed the medina to remain a living city.

After breakfast, leave Fez and travel south toward the Sahara, beginning a remarkable transition through several of Morocco's geographical and climatic regions in a single day.

Climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains and stop in Ifrane, a mountain town whose architecture, forests, altitude, and cooler climate present an immediate contrast to Fez. Continue through the cedar country around Azrou, an important center of the Middle Atlas and a region long associated with Amazigh communities, forests, pastoral life, and agriculture.

Travel south through Midelt, between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, pausing for lunch along the way. As the road continues toward southeastern Morocco, the landscape gradually becomes drier and more dramatic, revealing the transition from mountain country toward the pre-Saharan environment.

Continue through the Ziz Valley, where the river and extensive palm groves create a ribbon of cultivation through an increasingly arid landscape. Here, the relationship between water and human settlement becomes visible: villages, agriculture, date palms, and oasis life have developed around the precious presence of water.

By late afternoon, reach Merzouga, where the great dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the edge of the Sahara. Leave the road behind and travel into the dunes for your desert experience, watching the changing light and colors as the sun begins to set.

After breakfast, leave the Merzouga region and travel west through the landscapes of southern Morocco toward Tinghir, the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, and Ouarzazate.

The journey crosses a region where oasis settlements, palm groves, earthen villages, kasbahs, and cultivated valleys appear against an increasingly dramatic mountain landscape. Here, architecture and agriculture developed in direct response to climate, available water, local materials, and the need to protect both communities and their resources.

At Tinghir, explore the remarkable oasis landscape created along the Todra River before continuing into the Todra Gorge, where steep limestone walls rise above the narrow valley. Take time to walk through the gorge and observe how water has shaped both the landscape and the communities that developed around it.

Continue through Boumalne Dades and the Dades Valley, part of the historic route often called the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The name evokes the many fortified earthen settlements that once characterized this region, built from materials drawn directly from the surrounding land.

As you travel, your tour leader will introduce the distinctive architecture and settlement patterns of southern Morocco, including the difference between a kasbah, generally a fortified residence or stronghold, and a ksar, a fortified village containing multiple homes and communal spaces.

Continue toward Ouarzazate, historically positioned between the valleys of southern Morocco, the High Atlas Mountains, and the routes leading toward Marrakech. Arrive in the late afternoon and settle into your accommodation.

Leave Ouarzazate after breakfast and travel by 4WD vehicle into the landscapes of Morocco's Great South, following back roads toward Agdez and the Draa Valley.

The journey passes through the rugged country of the Saghro region before reaching Agdez, where the Draa Valley begins to reveal one of southern Morocco's great oasis landscapes. From here, the road follows a long ribbon of date palms, cultivated fields, earthen villages, kasbahs, and ksour sustained by the waters of the Draa.

The road is ceremonial. As the landscape unfolds gradually, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. Mountains give way to oasis, oasis to settlement, and settlement increasingly to desert. Rather than arriving suddenly in the Sahara, you begin to understand how people have lived along its margins for centuries.

Travel through communities whose survival has depended upon careful relationships between water, agriculture, architecture, and cooperation. Irrigation channels nourish date palms and small cultivated plots, while earthen architecture reflects both the materials available from the land and the demands of a hot, dry climate.

Continue south toward Zagora, historically connected with the caravan routes that linked Morocco with communities across the Sahara. The landscape here begins to tell another story of southern Morocco — not of isolation, but of movement, exchange, trade, scholarship, and encounters across the desert.

Arrive in Zagora and settle into your riad. Enjoy dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, travel south from Zagora toward Tamegroute and M'Hamid, following the Draa Valley toward the edge of Morocco's great Saharan landscapes.

Stop in Tamegroute, a small oasis community with an influence far greater than its size might suggest. Visit the historic Nasiriyya zawiya and manuscript library, associated with a tradition of religious learning, scholarship, and the movement of knowledge along the trans-Saharan routes. The manuscripts preserved here are reminders that the Sahara was never simply an empty space separating peoples; it was also a landscape across which scholars, pilgrims, merchants, books, ideas, and spiritual traditions traveled.

Tamegroute is also known for its distinctive pottery tradition. Visit local workshops to observe artisans working with clay and the characteristic green-glazed ceramics associated with the village. After seeing the refined ceramic traditions of Fez earlier in the journey, Tamegroute offers another expression of Moroccan craftsmanship, shaped by a very different landscape and history.

Continue toward M'Hamid El Ghizlane, one of the last oasis settlements before the open Sahara. Here, cultivated land, palm groves, earthen settlements, and desert meet, revealing how communities have adapted to life at the margins of the dunes.

Spend time experiencing the Saharan landscape, with a desert excursion and lunch in an oasis setting. Away from the cities, the scale and silence of the desert offer another way of encountering Morocco — through space, light, wind, and the rhythms of an environment in which water and shade acquire an entirely different value.

Return to Zagora in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, leave Zagora and travel north through the Draa Valley toward Ouarzazate, beginning the journey back across the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.

Continue to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar whose earthen buildings rise from the landscape along one of the historic routes between the Sahara and Marrakech. Walk through the fortified settlement and explore how homes, defensive walls, communal spaces, passages, and towers were constructed largely from earth and other materials available in the surrounding environment.

Aït Ben Haddou also brings together several themes encountered throughout this journey. Its location reflects the importance of the old caravan routes, while its architecture demonstrates how communities adapted building techniques to climate, geography, security, and locally available resources. The distinction introduced earlier in the journey becomes visible here: Aït Ben Haddou is not simply a kasbah, but a ksar — a fortified village containing a community within its walls.

Continue through the High Atlas Mountains, following the mountain road toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. The route climbs through a dramatic landscape of valleys, mountain slopes, villages, and changing vegetation, offering another opportunity to observe how altitude and geography influence settlement and ways of life.

As you cross the High Atlas, consider how important these mountains have been in shaping Morocco. They are not merely a scenic barrier between north and south; mountain passes such as Tizi n'Tichka have connected the Sahara and southern valleys with Marrakech and the plains beyond.

Descend from the mountains toward Marrakech, where the landscape changes once again as you return from the oasis and desert regions to one of Morocco's great historic cities.

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a full day exploring Marrakech, one of Morocco's four historic Imperial Cities and, for centuries, an important meeting point between the High Atlas, the Sahara, and the plains of central Morocco.

Begin with the Koutoubia Mosque and Minaret, one of the city's defining landmarks and an important expression of Almohad architecture. Continue through the historic city to the Saadian Tombs and Bahia Palace, where courtyards, gardens, carved wood, painted ceilings, stucco, and zellij reveal the refinement of Moroccan architecture and craftsmanship.

Explore the medina and souks, walking through streets organized around trades, workshops, markets, food, neighborhood life, and religious and communal spaces. Here, the craftsmanship encountered throughout the journey appears again in an urban setting — leather, textiles, metalwork, wood, ceramics, spices, and other trades that continue to form part of Marrakech's living economy.

Visit the Menara Gardens, where the large reservoir and surrounding olive groves offer a final opportunity to consider one of the recurring themes of your journey: the importance of water. From the Ziz and Draa valleys to the oases of the Sahara, water has shaped where people settle, what they cultivate, and how communities survive. In Marrakech, water made gardens, orchards, and urban life possible on the dry plains beneath the Atlas Mountains.

Toward evening, return to Jemaa el-Fna, when the square begins its daily transformation. Food stalls appear, musicians and performers gather, and residents and visitors fill a public space that has remained at the center of Marrakech life for generations.
