Arrival in Morocco — The Landscape Begins to Speak

Welcome to Morocco.

Upon arrival at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, you will be met by your Sarah Tours host and begin the journey south toward Marrakech.

There is no need to hurry today.

After a long international flight, this first drive is intended as an introduction rather than a lesson. Settle into your seat, look through the window, and allow Morocco to arrive gradually.

Casablanca belongs to Morocco's Atlantic world, but as we travel inland and south, the landscape begins telling another story. Cultivated plains stretch toward the horizon. Farms, villages and market towns appear along the road. Agriculture has long connected these rural landscapes with Morocco's great cities, reminding us from the beginning that a city never lives entirely by itself.

Then, if the day is clear, something begins to appear in the distance.

The Atlas Mountains.

At first they may seem merely a beautiful horizon behind Marrakech.

Over the coming days, we will discover that they are much more than scenery.

They capture water, influence climate, feed rivers and valleys, support forests and pastures, separate ecological regions, shape agriculture and provide homes for communities whose ways of living have developed in conversation with altitude, season and terrain.

For now, however, we simply notice them.

Tomorrow we will begin asking questions.

Marrakech — Where the Mountain Meets the City

Upon reaching Marrakech, settle into your hotel and take some time to rest.

Depending upon your arrival time and energy, we may later venture gently into the city.

Marrakech is often introduced through its palaces, souks and celebrated Jemaa el-Fna. We will certainly discover those things, but throughout this journey we will also look behind them.

Why could a great city flourish here?

Where did its water come from?

What connected it with the mountains rising beyond its walls?

Who brought food, animals, wool, timber, herbs and other products from the surrounding countryside?

Why did people from the Atlas and southern Morocco come here to trade?

The answers will gradually reveal Marrakech not as an isolated city surrounded by beautiful scenery, but as part of a much larger human and ecological landscape.

If energy permits, our first evening may include an unhurried walk through Jemaa el-Fna.

Do not try to understand everything.

Listen.

Observe.

Notice who is selling, who is buying, who is performing, who is eating, and who has come into the city from somewhere else.

Tomorrow we will begin exploring Marrakech more closely.

Tonight, we simply arrive.

After dinner, return to your hotel for a well-earned rest.

The Atlas will still be there in the morning.

And our journey into the land that shaped Morocco will have begun.

What can a landscape tell us before we know how to read it?

The City the Mountains Made

This morning, look toward the Atlas again.

Yesterday the mountains were a distant presence on the horizon.

Today we begin discovering what they have been doing here for centuries.

Our exploration starts at the Menara, where a large reservoir lies among olive groves with the High Atlas rising beyond it.

At first glance, it is one of Marrakech's most familiar and graceful images: water, pavilion, olive trees and mountains.

But let us look again.

The water is the story.

Marrakech developed on a relatively dry plain. A city of gardens, orchards, fountains, hammams, households, craftsmen and markets could not flourish here through rainfall alone.

Water had to travel.

For centuries, human ingenuity worked with the geography of the Atlas and the surrounding plain, capturing and directing water through irrigation systems to sustain gardens, agriculture and urban life.

Suddenly the mountains behind the Menara are no longer a backdrop.

They are participants in the city.

When Water Becomes Civilization

We continue through Marrakech looking at the city through this relationship between environment and human ingenuity.

Gardens are not merely decorative spaces. In an arid climate, shade, vegetation and water are expressions of both beauty and adaptation.

Courtyards respond to heat.

Thick walls moderate temperature.

Narrow streets create shade.

Fountains bring water into architecture.

The traditional house turns inward, creating its own protected climate.

What appears to be architectural beauty often began as practical intelligence.

And, as Morocco so often reminds us, function and beauty need not be enemies.

We will visit selected historic landmarks, including the Koutoubia and Bahia Palace, not simply to accumulate monuments but to observe how architecture, materials, climate, craftsmanship and political history came together to create the city.

The Koutoubia also opens another geographical door. Its architectural language travelled far beyond Marrakech, connecting the city historically with the wider western Islamic world, including Andalusia.

Landscapes may shape civilizations, but civilizations also move across landscapes.

The Countryside Enters Marrakech

Later we enter the souks.

Here our journey changes again.

Yesterday we saw cultivated land from the road.

Today some of that countryside has arrived in the city.

Look beyond the color of the market.

Ask where things came from.

Olives and oils.

Herbs and spices.

Wool and leather.

Wood.

Fruit and vegetables.

Carpets and woven textiles.

Objects made from materials that began their lives somewhere beyond Marrakech.

A market is not simply where things are sold.

It is where landscapes meet people.

Mountain communities, farmers, pastoralists, craftsmen, merchants and city dwellers have depended upon one another through networks of exchange that long predate modern tourism.

The souk allows us to begin following those relationships.

Jemaa el-Fna — A Human Landscape

Toward the end of the day, we return to Jemaa el-Fna.

Yesterday we simply observed it.

Today perhaps we see more.

The square is not a monument. It is a human landscape whose character has been shaped by movement into and out of Marrakech—merchants, storytellers, musicians, healers, food sellers, rural visitors, craftspeople and generations of city residents.

We will not try to reduce it to an explanation.

Some places should be allowed to remain larger than our interpretation of them.

Walk.

Listen.

Taste something if curiosity invites you.

Watch Marrakech change as afternoon gives way to evening.

And remember the mountains beyond the city.

Tomorrow we will leave Marrakech and travel toward them.

We will follow the water upstream into the Ourika Valley and meet communities who live much closer to its source.

Today we discovered something simple:

A city does not end at its walls.

Its water may begin in a mountain.

Its food may begin in a field.

Its wool may begin with a shepherd.

Its wood may begin in a forest.

Its prosperity may depend upon people whose homes lie far beyond the city itself.

Marrakech is not separate from its landscape.

Marrakech is one of its expressions.

How much of a city exists beyond the city itself?

Following the Water into the Mountains

Yesterday, in Marrakech, we discovered that the city reaches far beyond its walls.

Today we follow one of those relationships in the opposite direction.

We leave the plain behind and travel toward the High Atlas, following the Ourika Valley as the mountains gradually close around us.

The change is not sudden.

That is part of what makes this journey interesting.

Watch the landscape.

The broad plain begins to narrow. The horizon rises. Villages appear along the slopes. Cultivated land follows the river. Walnut, fruit trees and small agricultural plots occupy places where soil and water allow them to exist.

The farther we travel into the valley, the more clearly we can see that people have not simply settled in a beautiful landscape.

They have learned how to negotiate with it.

Where the House Stands and the Field Remains

Look carefully at the villages.

Many houses climb the slopes rather than occupy the precious flatter ground beside the river.

Why?

Because good agricultural soil is valuable.

In mountain country, a family does not necessarily build wherever construction is easiest. The land itself may determine what must be preserved for cultivation, where animals can graze, where water can be reached and where a house can stand without taking away from the family's ability to produce food.

A village on a hillside therefore becomes more than picturesque architecture.

Its position is part of its knowledge.

Stone, earth, timber, slope, sun and water all participate in the decision.

This is one of the lessons we will encounter repeatedly across Morocco: traditional landscapes often contain solutions developed over generations, long before anyone used expressions such as ecological design or sustainable development.

People learned because they had to live here.

The River as Neighbor

As we continue toward Setti Fatma, the Ourika River remains close to us.

For the visitor, a mountain river may first appear simply beautiful.

For the communities of the valley, water means much more.

It irrigates.

It feeds orchards.

It supports households.

It determines what can grow.

It connects one settlement with another.

And when its force changes, people must respond.

Water is therefore not merely part of the landscape.

It is part of the social life of the valley.

Where water must be shared, communities also develop understandings about access, timing, maintenance and responsibility.

The river teaches agriculture, but it also teaches cooperation.

Walking to Get Closer

Around Setti Fatma, we leave the vehicle behind for a mild walk.

There is no mountain to conquer today.

We walk because some relationships cannot be understood properly through a windshield.

The pace changes.

We can notice the walls holding soil on a slope, the channels carrying water, the plants growing beside the river, the materials used in a house, the sound of water moving through the valley and the distances people themselves negotiate as part of ordinary life.

Depending upon conditions and the comfort of the group, those wishing to walk farther may explore toward the waterfalls with our local guide, while others can enjoy the valley at a gentler pace.

The purpose is not how far we walk.

Walking is simply our way of getting closer.

Lunch will be enjoyed in the valley, where food gives us another opportunity to look around and ask where what we are eating may have come from.

A meal, too, belongs to a landscape.

Returning to Marrakech

Later in the afternoon, we descend toward Marrakech.

But this is not quite the same road we travelled this morning.

We now know something about what lies behind the mountain produce entering the city.

The walnut has a valley.

The fruit has an orchard.

The water has a source.

The person selling something in Marrakech may have a village somewhere along a road like this one.

Yesterday we discovered that the mountains enter the city.

Today we have entered the mountains.

Tomorrow we will do something different again.

We will cross them.

And when we reach the other side of the High Atlas, Morocco itself will begin to change before our eyes.

When people live with a difficult landscape for generations, does the landscape shape only their livelihood—or also the way they learn to live together?

Across the High Atlas — When the Landscape Changes Sides

This morning we leave Marrakech behind and travel south.

Yesterday we followed the water into the mountains.

Today we cross the mountains themselves.

The road begins climbing through the High Atlas, following valleys and slopes where villages appear almost to grow from the earth around them. Fields occupy whatever land can be cultivated. Terraces hold soil against gravity. Houses respond to slope, available materials and climate.

As we gain altitude, vegetation changes.

So does the air.

Look back occasionally.

The plain of Marrakech gradually disappears below us.

Ahead lies another Morocco.

A Mountain Has Two Faces

The High Atlas is not simply a range of beautiful peaks running across the country.

It is one of Morocco's great geographical actors.

Moisture-bearing air arriving from the Atlantic encounters these mountains. Elevation influences rainfall, snow and vegetation, while beyond the main range the country gradually becomes drier as we descend toward the pre-Saharan south.

We can actually watch this transition happen.

Trees become fewer.

Vegetation thins.

Colors change.

The earth begins revealing itself more openly.

Villages change with it.

So does agriculture.

So does architecture.

The mountains have not merely separated two landscapes.

They have helped create them.

At Tizi n'Tichka, we reach the high point of our crossing and pause when conditions allow.

There is no need to conquer the pass.

We simply stand for a moment between two watersheds, two directions and two ecological worlds.

Then we begin descending.

When the House Becomes the Landscape

On the southern side of the Atlas, another relationship becomes increasingly visible.

Architecture changes color.

Why?

Because people build with what the land gives them.

Earth, stone, timber and water become walls, houses, granaries, villages and fortified settlements. Rather than imposing architecture upon the landscape, traditional building often seems to emerge from it.

This is where Aït Benhaddou becomes meaningful to our journey.

It is famous today as a UNESCO World Heritage site and as a setting used by the film industry. But we are interested in something older than cinema.

We approach it as a ksar — a fortified settlement shaped by geography, available materials, community and the older routes connecting the Sahara with the country beyond the Atlas.

Walk through its earthen lanes and look closely.

The walls beneath your hand began as landscape.

The buildings carry the colors of the ground because, quite literally, much of the ground became the buildings.

Here architecture gives us another way of reading nature.

Human beings did not simply inhabit this environment.

They learned how to build with it.

The Road Toward Ouarzazate

We continue toward Ouarzazate through increasingly arid country.

By now Marrakech seems much farther away than the number of kilometers would suggest.

This is one of the pleasures of travelling through Morocco by road.

Distances measured on a map tell us very little about the changes occurring between them.

This morning we left gardens, olive groves and the Marrakech plain.

We climbed through mountain valleys.

We crossed the High Atlas.

We descended into a drier world of exposed geology, earthen settlements and increasingly sparse vegetation.

All in one day.

Ouarzazate lies within this meeting place between mountain and desert environments, where water descending from the Atlas has made settlement and agriculture possible in an otherwise demanding landscape.

Tonight we rest here.

Tomorrow we will continue east through valleys where rivers have drawn long green lines across an increasingly arid country.

There we will encounter another Moroccan lesson:

When the land changes, how much must human life change with it?

Where Water Draws the Map

Yesterday we crossed the mountain with two faces.

Today we travel through the world created on its drier side.

Leaving Ouarzazate, the landscape opens before us in broad expanses of earth, rock and mountain. At first the country may appear increasingly empty.

But look more carefully.

Across this arid land run narrow bands of green.

They are telling us where the water is.

And where there is water, people have gathered.

The Valley as a Long Garden

We travel through the Dadès country toward El Kelaâ M'Gouna and Boumalne Dadès.

Here the contrast between the dry surrounding land and cultivated valley can be extraordinary.

Along the river grow fruit trees, small fields and gardens. Villages follow the geography of cultivable land, while earthen kasbahs and settlements rise in colors borrowed almost directly from the surrounding soil.

In spring another plant announces itself.

The rose.

Around El Kelaâ M'Gouna, roses have traditionally been grown along field boundaries and hedgerows. What may appear to the visitor simply as something beautiful and fragrant also belongs to a rural economy. Flowers are harvested and transformed into rosewater and other products.

Once again, landscape becomes livelihood.

The rose is not separate from agriculture.

The kasbah is not separate from earth.

The village is not separate from water.

Everything is related.

Geology Enters the Story

As we continue east, the land begins speaking another language.

Rock.

The Dadès and Todra regions reveal the tremendous geological forces that shaped this part of Morocco. Rivers have cut through mountain formations, exposing cliffs, folds and narrow passages that allow us to read something of a history far older than human settlement.

At Todra, towering rock walls close around the river.

But rather than seeing the gorge only as a dramatic natural monument, notice what happens when the river emerges from it.

Life follows.

Palms appear.

Fields appear.

Villages appear.

Human settlement gathers along the water.

Geology determines where water can travel, and water helps determine where people can live.

The landscape is becoming a chain of relationships.

The Oasis — Not an Accident in the Desert

As we continue toward Erfoud, aridity becomes more pronounced.

Then the date palm begins appearing.

For many travelers, the oasis is one of the great romantic images of the Sahara: palms rising unexpectedly from an otherwise dry landscape.

But an oasis is much more interesting than the image.

It is an organized human ecology.

Water must be found, directed and shared.

Land must be cultivated carefully.

Shade matters.

Soil matters.

The date palm itself helps create conditions beneath which other plants can grow.

Generations of knowledge are contained in what may initially look like a simple grove of trees.

The oasis teaches an important lesson:

Scarcity does not necessarily produce emptiness. It can produce organization.

Where water is limited, its use becomes everybody's concern.

Agriculture becomes cooperation.

Survival becomes relationship.

Where the Road Becomes Sand

Beyond Erfoud, our relationship with the landscape changes once again.

The paved road has carried us across plains, mountains and valleys.

Now we leave it behind.

We continue by four-wheel-drive vehicle toward Merzouga, where the great dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the surrounding desert.

Here the horizontal world begins to change.

Sand moves.

Wind redraws surfaces.

Tracks disappear.

Distances become difficult to judge.

Eventually we meet our camels for the final approach toward camp.

There is no need to describe the dunes as breathtaking.

The Sahara can speak for itself.

We simply enter.

A Night Beneath the Sahara Sky

As evening approaches, light changes across the dunes and the heat of the day begins to leave the sand.

Our camp becomes our home for the night.

Dinner is prepared, and there may be music around the camp according to the evening and the people present.

But we will not manufacture an encounter for the sake of entertainment.

The desert does not need a performance to become meaningful.

Step away from the lights for a moment.

Listen.

The silence itself has texture.

Look upward.

For generations, people crossing these regions travelled through a landscape in which knowledge of water, direction, weather, animals and distance could matter profoundly.

Tonight we are comfortable guests.

We should remember the difference.

We have crossed in a single day from river valleys and rose country through gorges, palm groves and oasis settlements to the edge of the great dunes.

The land has become progressively drier.

Yet human life has not disappeared.

It has adapted.

It has concentrated.

It has learned.

Yesterday the mountain showed us its two faces.

Today its southern face has taught us something else:

When water becomes scarce, every drop begins to have a biography.

Tomorrow we leave the Sahara and follow one of those biographies north.

From the Date Palm to the Cedar

We wake this morning in one of Morocco's driest landscapes.

By evening, we will have crossed mountain country where great cedar trees grow.

Few days reveal the geographical diversity of Morocco as clearly as this one.

We leave the dunes behind and travel north toward the Ziz Valley.

Yesterday, scarcity taught us to notice water.

Today we follow it.

The Green Line

From higher ground, the Ziz Valley can appear almost improbable.

A long ribbon of palms and cultivation winds through an otherwise dry landscape.

But there is nothing accidental about it.

The green follows water.

The settlements follow the green.

And the road, in many places, follows the same geography that human movement has followed for generations.

Date palms dominate the oasis landscape, but beneath and around them exists a more complex agricultural world. Shade makes other cultivation possible, while careful management of water allows communities to produce food in an environment where careless use would quickly have consequences.

Yesterday we asked whether scarcity makes something more valuable or teaches us to share.

Here perhaps we begin to see that it does both.

Scarcity gives water value because everyone depends upon it.

A drop wasted upstream is not simply one person's loss.

Someone may be waiting downstream.

The landscape quietly turns ecology into ethics.

Leaving the Palm Behind

We continue north toward Errachidia and begin climbing.

Watch carefully.

The date palm becomes less common.

The architecture changes.

The air changes.

Elevation begins doing what latitude would require hundreds of kilometers to accomplish elsewhere.

We are leaving the Saharan and pre-Saharan environment and entering the mountain systems of interior Morocco.

The transition is gradual enough to observe but dramatic enough to feel.

Rock formations, high plateaus and mountain valleys accompany us toward Midelt.

Here the High Atlas and Middle Atlas worlds approach one another, and the landscape opens into broad upland country.

We stop for lunch around Midelt.

But even lunch belongs to our journey.

Look at what grows here compared with what grew around Erfoud.

Agriculture has changed because altitude, temperature, rainfall and soil have changed.

The farmer has changed crops because the landscape has changed the possibilities.

The Shepherd's Landscape

As we continue into the Middle Atlas, another relationship becomes visible.

Not all useful land is cultivated.

Some landscapes support animals better than crops.

Pastoral communities have long moved livestock according to pasture, water and season, creating a relationship with territory very different from that of the settled farmer in an oasis.

Movement itself can be an adaptation.

If we encounter pastoral families along the road, we may greet them when circumstances naturally allow.

But we do not travel looking for a “nomad encounter.”

Their camp is not our attraction.

It is somebody's temporary home.

We arrive, if invited, as guests.

And sometimes the most respectful encounter is simply to pass, wave, and continue along the road.

The Cedar

Then something remarkable happens.

Trees return.

Not palms.

Cedars.

Around Azrou, the great cedar forests of the Middle Atlas announce that we have entered another ecological Morocco entirely.

This morning we woke beside Saharan dunes.

Now we can stand beneath trees adapted to mountain altitude, winter cold and greater moisture.

Pause for a short walk if conditions permit.

Feel the temperature.

Smell the forest.

Listen.

After the openness of the Sahara, even sound behaves differently among trees.

The forest is not simply beautiful. It is another living system.

For surrounding communities it has historically been connected with grazing, timber, water, seasonal movement and livelihood. Like the oasis, it asks human beings how much they can take while allowing the system itself to continue.

Scarcity taught responsibility in the south.

Abundance requires responsibility too.

Our Fellow Inhabitants

The cedar forests are also home to Barbary macaques, one of the native primates of North Africa.

We may see them during our passage through the forest.

We observe them as inhabitants of this environment rather than performers waiting beside the road.

Wildlife belongs first to its habitat.

We are the visitors.

Toward Fez

From Azrou, we continue northward.

The mountain country gradually gives way to the Saïss plain.

Agriculture changes again.

The horizon opens.

And somewhere ahead lies Fez.

After a day dominated by valleys, palms, high plateaus, pasture and cedar forest, entering one of Morocco's great historic cities might appear to mark the end of our natural-landscape journey.

It does not.

Tomorrow we will discover that much of what we have been seeing along the road has followed us into the city.

The wool of pastoral country.

The leather of animals.

The cedar of forests.

The grain and produce of agricultural plains.

The herbs of mountains and countryside.

The people who carried, transformed, traded and sold them.

Fez will show us what happens when landscape becomes craft, commerce and civilization.

But before we enter the city, remember where this morning began.

A date palm.

A desert.

A scarce drop of water.

And now, cedar forest.

A map would tell us that we travelled from Merzouga to Fez.

The landscape tells us that we crossed several worlds.

Today's Question

When nature gives us abundance, do we become more responsible—or simply less aware of what things are worth?

When the Landscape Enters the City

Yesterday we crossed several ecological worlds.

We began among date palms, followed the Ziz north, climbed through mountain country, passed pastoral landscapes, walked beneath cedar trees and eventually descended toward the fertile Saïss plain.

Today we enter Fez.

At first this may seem like a completely different journey.

The road disappears.

Mountains recede.

Nature gives way to walls, houses, mosques, workshops, markets and narrow streets.

But has the landscape really disappeared?

This morning we are going to look for it.

A City in Its Landscape

We begin above the old city, where Fez can first be understood as a whole.

From the heights surrounding the Medina, look down before entering.

The city occupies a basin surrounded by hills and connected to the fertile Saïss plain and the mountain regions beyond.

Water was essential to its growth.

So was agriculture.

So were the routes that connected Fez with the Middle Atlas, Rif, Mediterranean, Sahara and wider networks of trade.

The walls may define the city physically.

They never isolated it economically or culturally.

Fez depended upon a much larger landscape.

Now we descend and enter through one of its gates.

The vehicle stays behind.

From here, we walk.

Follow the Material

There are many ways to explore Fez.

Today we try something simple.

Follow the material.

A craftsman works with leather.

Where did the hide begin?

Another works with wool.

Where were the sheep raised?

A carpenter shapes cedar.

Where did the tree grow?

A merchant sells olives, fruit, herbs or grain.

Where was it cultivated?

A weaver works with natural fibers.

A dyer works with pigments.

A metalworker shapes copper or brass.

Suddenly the Medina becomes connected again with landscapes we have crossed—and with others extending far beyond the city.

What nature provides as raw material, human knowledge transforms.

**The Guilds — Knowledge in the Hands

As we descend through the Medina, different crafts begin announcing themselves.

Sometimes we see them.

Sometimes we hear them first.

The tapping of metalworkers in Seffarine.

The movement of carpenters around Nejjarine.

Leather being worked near the tanneries.

Textiles, embroidery, food, spices and countless small trades occupying streets whose organization reflects generations of urban life.

But an object does not become beautiful merely because the material exists.

Someone must know what to do with it.

A tree does not make a carved cedar door.

A sheep does not make a woven textile.

A hide does not make a saddle.

Earth does not make pottery by itself.

Between nature and object stands knowledge.

And much of that knowledge traditionally passed from person to person.

Master to apprentice.

Parent to child.

One pair of hands to another.

The Medina therefore contains another kind of landscape:

a landscape of inherited knowledge.

Water Behind the Walls

Water accompanies us again.

We encountered it at the Menara.

We followed it into Ourika.

We watched settlements gather around it in the south.

We saw its scarcity create the oasis.

In Fez, water enters an urban civilization.

Historically, streams and channels supplied households, fountains, gardens, hammams, workshops and religious institutions throughout the city.

The principle remains familiar.

Water makes life possible.

Human beings organize themselves around its use.

Only the form has changed.

In the desert we saw palms.

Here we find fountains, courtyards and workshops.

The same necessity produces different expressions.

More Than a Marketplace

We continue toward the great commercial and spiritual heart of the Medina, passing through markets and historic quarters toward the Qarawiyyin area, Attarine, Nejjarine and Seffarine.

We will certainly admire the architecture.

But today architecture is not separated from the society that produced it.

A mosque requires builders.

A madrasa requires craftsmen.

A house requires woodworkers, plasterers, tile makers and metalworkers.

A city requires food.

Markets require countryside.

Crafts require materials.

Knowledge requires transmission.

And all of them require people.

This is why Fez should never be understood merely as a collection of old buildings.

The monument is only the visible part of a much larger relationship.

The Tanneries — Transformation

At the tanneries, perhaps the relationship between nature and human transformation becomes most visible.

Animal hides arrive as raw material.

Through a demanding sequence of preparation, cleaning, treatment, dyeing and drying, they are transformed into leather that will later pass into the hands of other craftsmen.

For the visitor, the tannery is visually extraordinary.

For us, the more interesting question is:

How many landscapes and how many human hands are contained in a finished object?

The answer is rarely one.

Tea Behind a Door

Toward the end of our walk, whenever arrangements and circumstances permit, we may enter a traditional Fez home for mint tea.

After a day of markets, workshops, monuments and crowded streets, crossing the threshold of a house changes the scale of the city.

Fez becomes intimate.

The public city gives way to the private one.

Hospitality has its own geography: the threshold, the courtyard, the room prepared to receive a guest.

Here there is nothing we need to inspect.

We sit.

We drink tea.

We talk.

For a little while, we allow ourselves to be received.

Because a city is not understood only through what it produces.

It is also understood through how it receives another human being.

What Came Through the Gate?

When we finally emerge from the Medina, think again about yesterday.

The cedar forest no longer seems quite so distant.

Neither does the shepherd.

Neither does the farmer.

Neither does water.

The countryside has been entering these gates for centuries—in sacks, baskets, caravans, animals, timber, wool, food and human movement.

Fez transformed some of those materials into objects.

It transformed others into meals.

And through generations of craftsmen, scholars, merchants and families, it transformed knowledge into culture.

Tomorrow we leave Fez and travel north.

The landscape will change once again.

We will cross the fertile country around Zerhoun, encounter the ancient settlement of Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, and eventually climb toward the Rif.

But tonight perhaps Fez has given us another way of seeing Morocco.

Yesterday we travelled from the date palm to the cedar.

Today we discovered that a forest can enter a city as a door.

Today's Question

**When nature becomes culture, where does one end and the other begin? **

From the Saïss Plain to the Rif — The Land Remembers

This morning we leave Fez behind.

Yesterday we followed wood, wool, leather, food and water through the gates of the Medina and watched nature become culture in the hands of people.

Today we return to the countryside.

Almost immediately, the horizon opens.

Fields replace walls.

Cultivated plains stretch toward rolling hills.

Olive trees appear.

Villages become visible again.

After the density of Fez, there is room to look farther.

But the countryside we enter is not empty land between cities.

It has memory.

Volubilis — Why Here?

Our first stop is Volubilis.

It is tempting to approach an archaeological site by beginning with dates, dynasties and ruins.

Today we begin with a different question:

Why was a city built here?

Look around before looking at the stones.

The surrounding country is fertile.

Agriculture has supported human settlement here for centuries. Grain, olives and other products connected this region with wider systems of exchange long before modern Morocco existed.

Then enter the ruins.

Columns, mosaics, houses, presses, streets and public buildings tell us about the people who lived here.

But the fields surrounding them tell us why life on this scale could flourish here at all.

Civilizations do not float above geography.

They eat.

They drink.

They cultivate.

They trade.

They depend upon soil, water, climate and routes connecting them with other people.

At Volubilis, archaeology gives us the remains of a city.

The landscape gives us part of the reason for the city.

Moulay Idriss — When Geography Becomes Sacred

From Volubilis we continue toward Moulay Idriss Zerhoun.

The town appears against the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, its houses gathered closely around the contours of the hill.

Here another layer enters our journey.

A landscape can provide water.

It can provide food.

It can provide building material.

It can shape roads and settlements.

But human beings also give landscape meaning.

Moulay Idriss is associated with Moulay Idriss I, whose memory occupies an important place in Morocco's religious and historical consciousness.

Over generations, pilgrimage and remembrance have made this mountain town part of Morocco's sacred geography.

People came here not because the soil was fertile or because a road was convenient, but because memory drew them.

And once people begin returning to a place generation after generation, memory itself becomes part of the landscape.

The mountain remains stone.

The town remains houses and streets.

Yet to those who come with devotion, it carries something that cannot be measured by geography alone.

Perhaps this is another way nature becomes culture.

**We inhabit landscapes physically, but we also inhabit them through memory. **

North Toward the Rif

We continue north.

Again, watch rather than rush.

The country begins changing.

Rainfall increases.

Olive cultivation becomes increasingly visible.

Hills become more pronounced.

The great open landscapes of southern Morocco are now far behind us.

We are approaching the Rif.

This is green Morocco again—but not the cedar country we crossed before Fez.

The Rif has its own ecology, agriculture, settlement patterns and history.

Mountain ranges are never simply interchangeable because they share the word mountain.

Altitude differs.

Rainfall differs.

Geology differs.

Vegetation differs.

Access differs.

And people respond differently.

Chefchaouen — A Town Belonging to a Mountain

Eventually Chefchaouen appears beneath the Rif peaks.

Many travelers know it first through one color.

Blue.

And yes, we will walk through its blue-washed streets.

But Chefchaouen deserves more than to be reduced to a background for photographs.

Before entering the Medina, look at where the town is.

Look upward.

Look at the slopes.

Notice the water.

Notice how the settlement occupies its mountain setting.

Chefchaouen belongs to the Rif before it belongs to tourism.

Its position, water sources, agricultural hinterland and relationship with surrounding mountain communities are part of its story.

We enter on foot.

There is no need to hunt for the “perfect blue street.”

We walk slowly and allow the town to introduce itself.

A communal oven.

A small shop.

A doorway.

Water flowing at Ras el-Ma.

Someone carrying groceries home.

Children returning from school.

A craftsman working.

A conversation in a café.

These ordinary things tell us something photographs often miss:

Chefchaouen is somebody's home.

The Color Is Only the Surface

As afternoon softens into evening, there will be time to enjoy the Medina.

Certainly photograph it.

Beauty is part of travel, and there is no virtue in pretending otherwise.

But perhaps by now our eyes have changed.

Ten days ago—or even this morning—we might have looked first at the blue wall.

Now perhaps we wonder about the mountain behind it.

Where does the water come from?

What grows beyond the town?

How are surrounding villages connected to its markets?

What histories brought different communities into these mountains?

How did isolation and connection work together here?

The blue has not become less beautiful because we ask these questions.

**It has acquired depth. ** Tonight we stay in Chefchaouen beneath the Rif Mountains.

Tomorrow we descend from mountain country toward Morocco's Atlantic capital.

Another landscape is waiting.

But before leaving the Rif, perhaps we have learned something from the road between Fez and Chefchaouen.

We began among Roman ruins surrounded by agricultural land.

We climbed to a town made sacred through memory.

We ended in a mountain community known around the world for the color of its walls.

Three very different places.

Yet beneath each one lies the same relationship:

People do not merely occupy landscapes. They give them memory, meaning and identity.

Today's Question

When generations give meaning to a place, does the landscape eventually begin to remember them?

From the Rif to the Atlantic — Where the Land Opens to the Sea

This morning we leave Chefchaouen and descend from the Rif.

For several days, mountains have shaped our horizon.

Now the landscape begins to open.

The tight folds of mountain country gradually soften into hills, agricultural land and broader plains as we travel toward Morocco's Atlantic coast.

Watch the road again.

Yesterday we spoke about the way people give landscapes memory.

Today another force enters our story.

The sea.

Descending from the Mountain

Leaving Chefchaouen allows us to see the Rif differently.

Yesterday we were inside it.

Today we watch it recede.

Mountain villages, olive country and slopes gradually give way to lower and more open terrain.

This change affects more than scenery.

Mountain geography encourages particular forms of settlement, movement and agriculture. Plains permit others. Roads straighten. Fields broaden. Distances are experienced differently.

Once again, geography changes possibilities.

By now perhaps we no longer need to point out every transition.

The traveler has begun learning how to notice them.

That, perhaps, is one of the quiet achievements of this journey.

The Atlantic Enters Morocco

As we approach Rabat, the Atlantic becomes part of our landscape.

Morocco has never been shaped only by its interior.

The ocean brought another horizon.

It connected the country with other shores, other peoples and other histories.

Rivers reaching the Atlantic created places of settlement and exchange. Coastal cities looked both inland toward their agricultural hinterlands and outward toward the sea.

Rabat and its neighbor Salé developed around one such meeting place: the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Here water has changed character once again.

At Marrakech, we encountered water as something brought from the mountains.

In Ourika, it was a mountain river.

In the south, scarcity organized life around it.

In the Ziz, it drew a green line through arid country.

In Fez, it entered the city.

In the Rif, springs and rainfall helped sustain a greener mountain environment.

Now water becomes river, estuary and ocean.

We have followed it a long way.

Rabat — A City Facing Two Directions

Upon reaching Rabat, we begin exploring the city at a relaxed pace.

Rabat is Morocco's capital, but its character cannot be understood through government buildings alone.

The city faces in two directions.

Inland and outward.

Toward Morocco and toward the Atlantic.

Its history reflects both.

We visit selected landmarks that allow these different layers to emerge rather than trying to collect every monument.

At the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, we encounter Morocco's political and dynastic history expressed through architecture and national memory.

Nearby, the Bouregreg reminds us that the city existed within a geographical setting long before it became a modern capital.

The river is not decoration beside the city.

It helped create the possibilities of the city.

The Oudaya — Where River Meets Ocean

Later we enter the Kasbah of the Oudaya.

Its walls occupy a commanding position above the Bouregreg near its meeting with the Atlantic.

Before looking at the architecture, look at the geography.

Why build here?

From this position, river, estuary, ocean and surrounding country can all be understood differently.

Military strategy, settlement, maritime activity and trade become connected with the physical landscape.

Once again we discover that the placement of a monument may tell us as much as the monument itself.

Walk through the narrow streets.

White and blue replace yesterday's mountain blue with a distinctly coastal atmosphere.

Then find a place from which to look outward.

For much of this journey, mountains have stopped our eyes.

The Sahara stretched them toward an immense horizon.

The Medina drew them inward.

Now the Atlantic opens them again.

Chellah — Nature Returns to the Ruins

If time allows, we visit Chellah.

Here several periods of human history occupy the same ground.

Ancient settlement, later Islamic history, gardens, vegetation and birdlife coexist within the walls.

Ruins are particularly interesting on a journey about landscape because they remind us of something human beings sometimes prefer to forget.

We build.

We inhabit.

We abandon.

Nature returns.

Plants enter cracks.

Birds nest on walls.

Weather softens stone.

A place created by human hands slowly enters another relationship with the natural world.

Perhaps ruins are not simply evidence of what disappeared.

They are places where nature and memory learn to live together.

The Journey Opens

Tonight we are in Rabat.

Tomorrow we leave for Casablanca airport.

Our journey is almost complete.

Think for a moment about the landscapes behind us.

The Atlas on the horizon of Marrakech.

Water moving toward the city.

The Ourika Valley.

The mountain with two faces.

The dry southern valleys.

Roses growing beside cultivated fields.

Todra cutting through rock.

The oasis gathering around scarce water.

Saharan sand.

The green line of the Ziz.

Pastoral uplands.

Cedar forest.

The Saïss plain.

Fez transforming nature into culture.

The agricultural country of Volubilis.

Sacred Zerhoun.

The Rif.

Chefchaouen beneath its mountains.

And now the Atlantic.

None of these landscapes existed independently from the people who learned to inhabit them.

And none of those communities lived independently from the land.

Perhaps Morocco's diversity is easier to understand now.

We have not simply travelled through different scenery.

We have travelled through different relationships between people and place.

Tomorrow there is only a short road to the airport.

But tonight, beside the Atlantic, we allow the journey to remain open.

Today's Question

**After crossing a country from mountain to desert, forest to city, and river to ocean, are we still looking at landscape—or are we beginning to see relationship? **

The Road Home — What Will the Landscape Mean Now?

This morning, after breakfast, we leave Rabat and travel toward Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport for your departing flight.

There are no monuments to collect today.

No mountain to cross.

No valley waiting to be explained.

The journey has said what it needed to say.

So we simply travel.

The Same Road, Different Eyes

Look through the window one more time.

Fields pass.

Villages appear and disappear.

People are beginning their working day.

Perhaps there is traffic.

Perhaps a farmer is already in a field.

Perhaps someone is waiting beside the road.

Nothing needs to be extraordinary.

Ten days ago, some of these things might have appeared simply as scenery between one destination and another.

Perhaps they look different now.

Because we have learned that there is often a story beneath what appears ordinary.

A field contains knowledge.

A village has a reason for being where it is.

A cedar door once stood in a forest.

A rose belongs to an agricultural landscape.

An oasis is an agreement with scarcity.

A market contains the countryside.

A city drinks from somewhere.

A mountain can have two faces.

And a landscape can carry memory.

What We Have Crossed

We began in Marrakech with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.

At first, we simply noticed them.

Then we followed their water.

We entered their valleys.

We crossed to their southern face and watched the country become drier.

We followed rivers through rose country and gorges.

We saw life gather around scarce water.

We entered the Sahara.

Then we travelled north from the date palm to the cedar.

We followed the materials of the countryside into Fez and watched nature become culture.

We crossed fertile land where civilizations had flourished.

We climbed into sacred Zerhoun and the green Rif.

And finally we followed the land toward the Atlantic.

Morocco did not become simpler as we travelled through it.

It became more connected.

What the Map Could Not Show Us

A map can show Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Merzouga, Fez, Chefchaouen and Rabat.

It can show mountains, rivers and roads.

It can measure the kilometers between them.

But there are things a map cannot easily show.

How water becomes community.

How scarcity creates value.

How altitude changes agriculture.

How a mountain shapes climate.

How earth becomes architecture.

How a forest becomes a door.

How countryside enters a market.

How memory makes a place sacred.

How human beings adapt to the land—and how, over generations, the land enters their culture.

Those relationships were our real journey.
