Casablanca is often introduced simply as Morocco's economic capital, but its story reaches much further into the past. Long before the modern city appeared, a settlement known as Anfa occupied this Atlantic coast. Portuguese intervention later introduced the name Casa Branca, while the city that emerged during the French Protectorate became one of North Africa's most ambitious experiments in twentieth-century urban planning and architecture.

Explore central Casablanca, where Art Deco, Neo-Moorish and modernist architecture reveal the extraordinary transformation of the city during the twentieth century. Around Mohammed V Square, the Central Market and the surrounding boulevards, European planning encountered Moroccan architectural vocabulary, creating an urban landscape quite different from the medieval cities you will encounter later in the journey.

Continue toward the Old Medina and Atlantic waterfront, reminders that Casablanca's identity has always been connected to the ocean, commerce, migration, and exchange.

Visit the monumental Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the Atlantic and created through the work of Moroccan artisans using traditions of carved plaster, cedarwood, marble, and zellij on a remarkable contemporary scale. Rather than representing a Morocco frozen in the past, the mosque demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship continues to participate in modern Moroccan architecture.

As time permits, travel along the Corniche and experience another side of contemporary Casablanca. A visit to Rick's Café may also be included for travelers interested in the enduring international mythology created around Casablanca by the famous 1942 film.

After breakfast, leave Casablanca and travel north along the Atlantic coast to Rabat, Morocco's present-day capital and one of the country's four historic Imperial Cities.

Rabat reveals its history differently from Casablanca. Rather than belonging primarily to one period, the city contains layers left by successive civilizations and dynasties. Ancient settlement, medieval fortifications, royal architecture, colonial-era urban planning, gardens, residential neighborhoods, and the institutions of modern Morocco coexist within the capital.

Begin at Chellah, where archaeological remains reveal some of the earliest chapters of the city's history. The site preserves traces of the Roman settlement of Sala Colonia alongside the later Marinid necropolis, allowing two very different periods of Moroccan history to occupy the same landscape.

Continue to the Kasbah of the Oudayas, overlooking the mouth of the Bou Regreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. Enter through its monumental Almohad gate and explore the narrow streets of this historic fortified quarter. From its position above the river, consider Rabat's relationship with neighboring Salé and with the Atlantic world beyond.

Visit Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of the great mosque begun by the Almohad ruler Yaqub al-Mansur in the late twelfth century. Its surviving columns and monumental tower remain evidence of the scale and ambition envisioned for Rabat during the Almohad period.

Nearby stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, resting place of King Mohammed V, King Hassan II, and Prince Moulay Abdallah. Here the journey moves into modern Moroccan history and the monarchy's role in the country's transition from the Protectorate period to independence.

Throughout the day, your guide will help connect these different Rabats rather than presenting them as isolated monuments: ancient Sala, the Almohad city, the royal capital, the Protectorate-era planned city, and contemporary Rabat.

After breakfast, leave Rabat and travel inland toward Volubilis, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, and finally Fez. Few days on this journey reveal Morocco's historical layers so clearly: within a relatively short distance, the road connects the Roman world of North Africa with the beginnings of the Idrisid period and the emergence of Fez.

Begin at Volubilis, one of Morocco's most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the remains of this ancient city, where houses, mosaics, arches, public buildings, olive presses, and streets reveal the life of a prosperous settlement that became part of the Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana.

But Volubilis also helps us see Morocco as part of a much older Mediterranean and North African world. The region did not begin with Rome, nor did its history end when Roman authority declined. Indigenous Amazigh populations, Mediterranean trade, local kingdoms, Roman influence, and later Islamic dynasties all contributed to the history of this landscape.

Continue through the fertile countryside to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, dramatically situated on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun. The town takes its name from Moulay Idriss I, whose arrival in Morocco in the late eighth century became a defining chapter in the country's Islamic history. His descendants established the Idrisid dynasty, and his son, Idriss II, became closely associated with the development of Fez.

Moulay Idriss remains an important place of pilgrimage and spiritual memory. Walk through the town and observe the sanctuary from the areas accessible to visitors while your guide explains its significance in Moroccan religious and historical life.

Then continue toward Fez.

As the city comes into view, stop for a panoramic introduction before entering it. After encountering Roman Volubilis and the spiritual legacy of Moulay Idriss, Fez no longer appears simply as another old city. It becomes the next chapter in a story the traveler has been following across the landscape.

Today, enter Fez el-Bali, not simply as a collection of monuments, but as a living city whose streets, neighborhoods, crafts, religious institutions, markets, fountains, workshops, and homes have developed through centuries of urban life.

Meet your local guide and begin with a panoramic introduction to Fez, Morocco's oldest Imperial City and one of the country's great historic centers of scholarship, craftsmanship, commerce, and spiritual life. Continue through Fez el-Jdid, including the Royal Palace gates and the Mellah, before entering the UNESCO-listed old city on foot.

Inside the medina, explore an urban landscape that developed long before automobiles and modern city planning. Its narrow streets and passageways connect residential neighborhoods with mosques, madrasas, markets, bakeries, workshops, fountains, hammams, and communal spaces. What may initially appear to be a maze gradually reveals an intricate organization of everyday life.

Visit the beautifully decorated Al Attarine Madrasa and continue toward Al Qarawiyyin, founded in the ninth century and long associated with religious learning, scholarship, and the intellectual history of Fez. Nearby, experience Seffarine Square, where the sound of metalworkers shaping copper and brass remains part of the medina's working landscape.

Spend time among the artisans of Fez, observing traditions such as zellij, ceramics, leatherwork, textiles, woodcarving, and metalwork. These crafts are not merely decorative remnants of the past. They belong to systems of apprenticeship, family knowledge, commerce, architecture, and community that continue to evolve.

Pause for lunch in the medina before continuing your exploration through its neighborhoods, souks, workshops, and public spaces.

Leave Fez this morning and travel south toward the Sahara, crossing several of Morocco's geographical and climatic regions in the course of a single day.

Climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where forests, agricultural land, mountain towns, and cooler temperatures create an immediate contrast with the urban landscape of Fez. Stop in Ifrane, whose twentieth-century architecture and high-altitude setting reveal yet another expression of Morocco's geographical diversity.

Continue through the cedar country around Azrou, an important regional center long connected with Amazigh communities, pastoral traditions, agriculture, forests, and the mountain routes that link different parts of the Middle Atlas.

Travel onward toward Midelt, situated between the Middle and High Atlas ranges. Pause for lunch before continuing south, where the landscape gradually becomes drier and the vegetation begins to change.

The road then descends toward the Ziz Valley, where one of the fundamental relationships of southern Morocco becomes visible: water and settlement. The river supports extensive palm groves, cultivated plots, villages, and oasis communities, creating a green corridor through increasingly arid country.

Continue through the southeast toward Erfoud and eventually Merzouga, where the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise near the edge of the Sahara.

Leave the road behind for your desert experience and travel into the dunes as the afternoon light begins to change. Here, after a day of forests, mountains, valleys, palms, and increasingly arid landscapes, the Sahara does not appear suddenly. The traveler has watched Morocco transform gradually on the road toward it.

Rise early in the Sahara and walk into the dunes to experience sunrise over Erg Chebbi. In the quiet of the morning, changing light gradually reveals the contours of the desert before the heat and activity of the day begin.

Return to camp for breakfast before leaving the dunes by 4WD and beginning the journey west toward Tinghir and the Todgha Valley.

As the Sahara recedes behind you, the landscape changes again. Arid plains and rocky terrain gradually give way to settlements and cultivated areas, revealing once more how closely human life in southern Morocco follows the presence of water.

Reach Tinghir, an oasis town surrounded by an extensive palm grove sustained by the Todgha River. Walk through parts of the oasis landscape and observe the relationship between irrigation, date palms, cultivated plots, earthen settlements, and community life.

Continue into the spectacular Todgha Gorge, where the river has cut a narrow passage between towering limestone walls. Take time to walk through the gorge and experience the landscape on foot rather than simply viewing it from the vehicle.

Here, water tells two stories at once. Over immense periods of time, it helped shape the physical gorge itself; in human time, it has made agriculture, settlement, shade, and oasis life possible.

Leave Tinghir and travel west through the landscapes of southern Morocco toward Boumalne Dades, Kelaat M'Gouna, the Valley of Roses, and Ouarzazate.

Continue through the Dades Valley, where cultivated land, villages, kasbahs, and dramatic rock formations reveal another relationship between geology, water, agriculture, and human settlement. Along the valley, traditional earthen buildings seem to emerge from the same earth on which they stand, their materials and colors reflecting the surrounding landscape.

Travel through Boumalne Dades and continue toward Kelaat M'Gouna, gateway to the region known as the Valley of Roses. Here, roses have become part of both the agricultural landscape and the local economy. During the flowering season, rose hedges appear among cultivated plots and villages; after the harvest, the petals are transformed into rose water, oils, fragrances, and other products.

But the roses are more than something beautiful to photograph. They offer another example of how communities have learned to work with the particular possibilities of their environment, turning a local crop into a tradition, livelihood, and regional identity.

As the journey continues toward Ouarzazate, notice the increasing presence of kasbahs and ksour, the earthen architecture characteristic of much of southern Morocco. Built largely from local materials, these structures reflect practical responses to climate, family and community organization, security, and the resources available from the land.

Arrive in Ouarzazate, historically positioned at an important crossroads between the southern valleys, Saharan routes, the High Atlas Mountains, and Marrakech.

Leave Ouarzazate and travel toward Aït Ben Haddou, one of southern Morocco's best-known fortified settlements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walk through the historic ksar, where earthen houses, defensive walls, towers, narrow passages, and communal spaces rise from the hillside above the surrounding valley. After several days traveling through southern Morocco, much of what you see here will already feel familiar: earth as a building material, water and cultivation below the settlement, defensive architecture, and communities positioned along routes of movement and exchange.

Aït Ben Haddou stood along one of the historic routes connecting the Saharan regions and southern valleys with Marrakech beyond the High Atlas. Its importance therefore lies not only in its architecture, but also in its relationship with the movement of people, goods, and ideas across the mountains.

Continue toward the High Atlas Mountains and begin the climb toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, reaching an elevation of more than 2,200 meters. The road winds through valleys, mountain slopes, and Amazigh communities, with vegetation and settlement patterns changing as altitude increases.

Crossing the High Atlas provides more than dramatic scenery. These mountains have shaped climate, agriculture, communication, migration, and regional identities, while their passes have connected rather than simply separated the different landscapes of Morocco.

From the pass, descend gradually toward the plains of Marrakech. After days among desert margins, oases, gorges, valleys, and mountain communities, the return to a major historic city marks another transition in the journey.

Today, explore Marrakech, one of Morocco's four historic Imperial Cities and a city whose history has long been connected with the High Atlas, the southern valleys, and the trans-Saharan routes beyond them.

Begin at the Menara Gardens, where a large reservoir surrounded by olive groves provides an immediate connection between the city and the mountains you crossed yesterday. Water carried from the High Atlas through traditional hydraulic systems helped sustain gardens, orchards, agriculture, and urban life on the otherwise dry Marrakech plain.

Continue to the Koutoubia Mosque, whose celebrated twelfth-century minaret remains one of the great landmarks of Almohad architecture and a defining feature of the Marrakech skyline.

Explore the Bahia Palace, where courtyards, gardens, carved and painted wood, stucco, and zellij reveal another expression of the craftsmanship encountered throughout your journey.

Then enter the medina and souks with your local guide. Rather than experiencing the souks simply as shopping streets, observe how trades, workshops, markets, neighborhood life, food, craftsmanship, and commerce continue to interact within the historic city.

Throughout the day, consider Marrakech not as an isolated destination but as a city shaped by its position. For centuries, people, agricultural products, crafts, animals, knowledge, and merchandise moved between the surrounding plains, the High Atlas communities, southern Morocco, and the city markets.

Toward evening, arrive at Jemaa el-Fna, when the square begins its daily transformation. Food stalls, musicians, performers, storytellers, residents, and visitors gather in a public space whose cultural life has been transmitted across generations.

Leave Marrakech this morning and travel toward the Ourika Valley, where the plains surrounding the city gradually rise into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains.

Only a short distance from Marrakech, the landscape and rhythm of life begin to change. Follow the Ourika River through a valley of cultivated terraces, orchards, villages, and mountain slopes, observing how water, altitude, and available land have shaped settlement and agriculture.

Travel through Amazigh communities whose relationship with Marrakech has developed over generations through markets, agriculture, seasonal movement, work, and trade. The mountains are close to the city geographically, but life here reveals another expression of Morocco.

Depending on the day of the week, visit a local market, where people from surrounding communities gather to buy and sell vegetables, fruit, livestock, household goods, clothing, and other necessities. Rather than treating the market simply as a tourist attraction, experience it as what it is: an important social and economic meeting place for the valley.

Continue toward Setti Fatma, situated deeper within the valley. Those wishing for a more active experience may walk toward the waterfalls with a local guide, while others can spend time along the river and in the village.

Along the way, there may also be opportunities to learn about local plants, herbs, food traditions, and small-scale agriculture, depending on the season and what is available during your visit.

Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.

The journey into Ourika adds an important dimension to your understanding of Marrakech. Yesterday you explored the city from within its walls and public spaces. Today you have seen part of the mountain landscape and rural communities with which Marrakech has long been connected.

Leave Marrakech and travel west toward Essaouira, watching the landscape change as the journey approaches Morocco's Atlantic coast.

Along the way, pass through the argan-growing country of southwestern Morocco, where this remarkable tree has long supported rural livelihoods and local food traditions. Where appropriate, stop at a women's cooperative to learn about the traditional production of argan oil and its importance to communities of the region.

Continue to Essaouira, an ancient Atlantic city that has preserved something increasingly difficult to find: the atmosphere of a traditional port.

Fishing boats still return with the day's catch. Nets are repaired along the waterfront. Fish is sold near the harbor. Craftspeople continue distinctive traditions in wood and other materials. Behind the ramparts, the medina remains intimately connected with the sea, its streets carrying the light, wind, sounds, and rhythms of the Atlantic.

Explore the fishing port before entering the UNESCO-listed medina with your local guide. Walk through its streets, markets, workshops, and the Skala and historic ramparts, discovering a city shaped over centuries by maritime trade and encounters among Amazigh, Arab, Jewish, African, Mediterranean, and European communities.

But Essaouira possesses another quality that is more difficult to place on a map.

There is an unmistakable artistic spirit to the city. Its Atlantic light, windswept ramparts, music, crafts, unhurried streets, and openness to people arriving from elsewhere have long attracted painters, musicians, writers, and travelers. During the 1960s and 1970s, Essaouira became particularly associated with the international counterculture generation, drawing hippies, musicians, and creative travelers searching for places beyond the conventional routes of tourism.

That creative atmosphere did not arrive from nowhere. Essaouira already possessed deep musical and artistic traditions of its own, including the Gnawa heritage that would later contribute to the city's international reputation as a meeting place for musical cultures.

Spend the afternoon walking through the medina and waterfront without trying to turn every moment into a scheduled visit. Essaouira is one of those places whose character is discovered as much through wandering, listening, and observing as through its monuments.

Hamid Mernissi said: "I sometimes think of Essaouira as the city of the blue toga. The Atlantic seems to drape itself around the city, in its light, its fishing boats, its painted doors, its wind, and the blue that appears again and again against the white walls of the medina. But Essaouira possesses another quality that is more difficult to place on a map."
