Overview
Travel to Morocco on a small-group cultural and music tour that explores the country’s living traditions through sound, rhythm, spirituality, and community. Morocco, one of the fabulous historic Mediterranean and North African civilizations, has preserved ancient rituals, beliefs, and poetic forms of expression that continue to shape daily life today. Music in Morocco is both secular and spiritual — a mirror of the soul, present at every ceremony, gathering, and celebration, giving voice to feelings that words alone cannot express.
This immersive music journey introduces travelers to Morocco’s extraordinary diversity of musical traditions — from popular Oughnia and Chaabi music, to sacred Sufi chanting and devotional Samaa across spiritual brotherhoods such as Boutchichia, Tijani, and Shadhiliya. Experience trance-drumming rituals and ceremonial music, including Issawa, Hmadcha, Jilala, Heddawa, and Gnawa, each carrying centuries of history, symbolism, and healing resonance.
You will also encounter regional and tribal music traditions such as Rai, Reggada, and the legendary Jajouka oboe — sounds that have inspired prominent international artists, including The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, Peter Gabriel, and Sting, whose work has drawn upon Moroccan rhythms and melodies.
A central theme of this tour is Andalusian classical music, one of the earliest structured musical systems of the Mediterranean world (13th–14th centuries), which contributed to the evolution of Western classical music, Flamenco in Spain, and Fado in Portugal. You will also discover Malhoune poetry-music, a uniquely Moroccan art form preserved since the 12th century, alongside ancient Berber (Amazigh) musical traditions whose roots may extend back to prehistoric ritual culture.
This enriching cultural and music expedition to Morocco is designed for travelers, musicians, scholars, and enthusiasts who wish to deepen their understanding of indigenous music, oral history, traditional instruments, and spiritual performance. Throughout the journey, you will meet musicians, observe ceremonies, and experience music in both rural Berber communities and historic cities such as Fez, Chefchaouen, and Marrakech.

Culture and Music Tour of Morocco
Judith Frugier Jun 04, 2025
The tour was good and our driver , Nisrine, was very competent, professional, and personable. We enjoyed her company very much. The musical presentations were delightful, particularly on the hills outside of Fes and in a Marrakech home, but fell short of expectation because there was no expert to educate us about either the music or the instruments played. After all, the emphasis of the trip was on music and culture. Our local guides in Volubulis, Fes, and Marrakech were excellent. We spent a lot of time driving and watching the scenery from the window. Food and accommodation were excellent, except for one stop.
