There is a reason our musical journey begins here.

Volubilis and the sacred town of Moulay Idriss stand within one of Morocco's oldest cultural landscapes, where layers of ancient history, spirituality and rural life have met for centuries. For us, this is more than a first stop. It is one of the spiritual heartlands of Morocco and the natural place to begin listening.

Moulay Idriss is also closely connected with some of Morocco's great traditions of spiritual music. Hmadcha and Issawa are not brought here to entertain visitors; they belong to the cultural and spiritual life of this region. This is important to us. Throughout this journey, whenever possible, we seek music where it lives and among the people who carry it.

After settling into our accommodation overlooking the countryside and the ruins of Volubilis, there will be time to rest after the journey. Those who wish may join an afternoon walk through Moulay Idriss, allowing the town to introduce itself slowly through its lanes, shrines, everyday life and surrounding hills.

After dinner, we gather informally for our first introduction to Moroccan rhythm and to the musical journey ahead.

There is no need to understand everything on the first evening.

For now, we begin by listening.

From the heart of Morocco to yours.

When Rhythm Becomes Remembrance

We begin the morning at Volubilis, walking among the remains of a city that has witnessed nearly two thousand years of human passage. Rather than rushing through the ruins, we take our time. There is space here for history, silence and reflection before continuing on foot through the ancient olive groves of Zerhoune.

After lunch overlooking the valley, we turn from the visible history of the region toward something that cannot be preserved in stone: its living spiritual traditions.

This afternoon we are introduced to the Hmadcha, one of Morocco's distinctive Sufi brotherhoods, whose roots are deeply connected with Moulay Idriss Zerhoune. Their tradition brings together devotional poetry, chanting, powerful percussion and movement. The rhythms can build gradually, repetition becoming intensity, until music is no longer something merely heard but something experienced through the body.

But we do not meet the Hmadcha simply to watch a performance.

We spend time with local musicians, learning about their instruments, rhythms and spiritual tradition. Through an informal drumming session, we begin to understand how repetition, voice and percussion can become forms of remembrance and communal expression.

Those who wish may join the rhythm and movement. Others may simply sit and listen. There is no obligation to perform, and there is no need to understand everything.

Our purpose is to encounter the tradition where it belongs, among people for whom it carries meaning.

By the end of the afternoon, Morocco's music has begun to reveal something important:

sometimes rhythm is entertainment; sometimes rhythm is remembrance.

Today we travel to Fez, where our exploration of Morocco through music enters one of its richest settings.

We begin by discovering the Medina itself. With our local guide, we walk through its quarters and markets, passing madrasas, fountains, workshops, mosques and shrines. At Seffarine, even work has its rhythm, as the sound of coppersmiths striking metal has echoed through the square for generations. Fez teaches us early that the boundary between music and everyday sound is not always as clear as we imagine.

Our journey eventually leads us toward another tradition deeply woven into the life of the city: Issawa.

The Issawa brotherhood traces its spiritual lineage to Sheikh al-Kamel of Meknes, but Fez embraced Issawa and made its music and rituals part of the city's own cultural life. Families including the Guissi, Bouzoubaa and Berrada have been among the custodians of its modes, rhythms and traditions, helping transmit them from one generation to another.

In the evening, we enter a traditional house such as Dar Lebbar or Dar Mernissi, where the large central patio provides the natural setting for a Jedba circle.

Here, something important happens.

This is not a private performance arranged only for our travelers.

As the percussion gathers strength and the haunting sound of the ghaita rises through the house and into the Medina, the door remains open. Neighbors, friends and anyone drawn by the familiar rhythms may enter. Some come to listen. Others chant, move, participate in the Jedba or simply sit among the gathering.

Our travelers do the same.

For an evening, the distinction between visitor and local becomes less important. We sit together within the same circle, experiencing Issawa not as something removed from its surroundings and placed on a stage, but within the community that has carried it forward.

And perhaps this is one of the most meaningful ways to encounter a living tradition.

The door remains open because the music still belongs to the community.

After two days of encountering Morocco's musical traditions within towns and cities, today we step beyond the walls and into the countryside north of Fez.

Mount Zalagh rises immediately beyond the city, yet few visitors explore its slopes. For generations, however, the mountain has been part of the life of Fez. Families come here for Nzaha — outings into the countryside to share food, conversation and the pleasure of being together among the olive groves and open landscapes.

For me, Zalagh is also personal. I grew up knowing these foothills, their paths and communities, and I believe that understanding Fez should not end at the gates of its Medina.

Our journey takes us toward the sanctuary associated with Sidi Ahmed Bernoussi, also remembered as Zerrouq el Fassi, a respected scholar in Morocco's Sufi tradition. The sanctuary and surrounding landscape have long provided a place of learning, retreat and spiritual reflection for his followers.

Here we make our first encounter with the rural communities surrounding Fez. The neighboring population includes communities of both Riffian and Arab heritage. Their histories and identities may differ, but the mountain, its sacred places and many of its traditions are shared.

Drums and the piercing voice of the ghaita accompany celebrations, gatherings and spiritual occasions throughout these mountain communities. Here again, music cannot easily be separated from place. The rhythms belong to weddings and festivities, to religious gatherings and to the people who have heard them since childhood.

But today we listen to another kind of music as well.

At the sanctuary, the voices of Quranic reciters can be heard while a sadaqa couscous is prepared. Couscous here is more than lunch. Preparing and sharing food as sadaqa — an offering made in generosity — transforms the meal into an act of hospitality and community.

And the people of these mountains happen to make exceptionally good couscous.

We sit with the community, listen to the recitation and share the meal together. There is no special table separating our travelers from everyone else. We eat from the same couscous, within the same sanctuary, participating respectfully in a tradition that existed long before we arrived and will continue after we leave.

Later we walk through the olive groves and surrounding countryside, meeting local people and enjoying the mountain in the unhurried spirit of Nzaha.

Bringing travelers to Zalagh is also part of our philosophy of responsible tourism. Tourism should not continually follow the same road while neighboring communities remain invisible. When approached respectfully, travel can widen the circle — allowing visitors to discover places they might otherwise never encounter while creating opportunities for the people who continue to care for those places.

Today, the music leads us beyond the Medina.

And the circle becomes a little wider.

Today we make one of Morocco's great geographical crossings, leaving the fertile Saiss plains and traveling through the Middle and High Atlas toward the pre-Saharan landscapes of the south.

The transformation begins gradually.

The agricultural plains around Fez give way to the evergreen forests of the Middle Atlas, where cedar, oak, streams and mountain pastures have shaped a very different way of life. Around Ifrane and Azrou, we travel through landscapes associated with pastoral communities before continuing toward Midelt, where the greener Middle Atlas begins to surrender to the rugged heights and stark horizons of the High Atlas.

Beyond the mountains, the world changes again.

Water becomes precious. Vegetation gathers around rivers and springs. Settlements begin to follow the logic of the oasis, and the traveler starts to understand why life in the desert margins depends so deeply upon cooperation, patience and an intimate knowledge of the environment.

This changing geography also prepares us to understand the music of southern Morocco.

In oasis and mountain communities, music has traditionally accompanied the important moments of collective life — harvests, seasonal gatherings, weddings, celebrations and occasions when the community comes together. The themes often emerge from the environment itself: hardship and endurance, love and loss, gratitude for rain and harvest, humility before forces greater than ourselves.

Among these traditions is Ahwash, where poetry, rhythm, movement and community meet within the circle. Men and women gather, voices answer one another, drums establish the pulse, and individual expression becomes part of something collective.

It is music that is difficult to separate from the people who make it.

As we descend toward the Ziz Valley, palms begin to appear against an increasingly arid landscape. What at first seems almost impossible gradually reveals itself: life flourishing where water permits it.

The oasis is therefore more than a beautiful landscape. It is an achievement of community.

And perhaps its music tells us the same thing.

In a demanding land, survival itself becomes a reason for gratitude — and celebration belongs to everyone.

The Circle of Ahwash

Among the musical traditions we begin to encounter as we approach southern Morocco is Ahwash. To call it simply a dance or musical performance would miss much of its meaning.

Ahwash belongs to the community.

Musicians and dancers, men and women, form a circle together. Around them other circles emerge as people join in — singing, dancing, praising, watching, and sometimes simply thanking God for the blessing of being together. Traditionally, these gatherings take place in village squares or within communal spaces where participation matters more than being a spectator.

The circle has no privileged front. In its own beautiful way, it makes people equal.

This communal spirit can also be seen in the architecture of southern villages. The traditional Agadir, or communal granary, was far more than a place for storing grain. Families kept precious possessions there under collective protection, making it something like an early community bank. Survival in a demanding environment required trust, cooperation and shared responsibility.

Perhaps Ahwash expresses the same wisdom through music.

The granary protects what the community possesses.

The circle celebrates what the community is.

By now, we have begun to become familiar with the quietness of the desert — the date palms gathered around water, the immense horizons, the dunes and the hospitality of the people who have learned to make their lives here.

We visit Rissani and the remains of Sijilmassa, once an important center on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Here the desert reminds us that it was never an empty space. For centuries, people, goods, beliefs, languages, poetry and music moved across it.

Toward evening, we continue to the dunes of Merzouga.

As darkness settles, a campfire is prepared and rugs are spread around it. We gather without rows of chairs or a stage. The desert itself becomes our gathering place.

Then, out of the darkness, the musicians begin to appear, dressed in the blue and white robes and turbans of the region.

The drums are placed near the fire to warm their skins. Among them is the large cattle-skin drum that gives Rokba its deep bass voice. It must remain close to the heat; as the skin cools, its sound changes. Even before the music begins, the desert is teaching us something about the relationship between instrument, environment and sound.

Then the chanting starts.

Rokba is not simply a performance with a fixed program. At its heart is an exchange between poets. Two voices challenge and answer one another, improvising verses on different subjects. Romance is a favorite theme, particularly when the poetry turns toward the line of women dancers waiting to respond.

A poet offers his verse.

The dancers answer through movement.

Another poet responds with words.

The circle listens, laughs, encourages, dances and judges the beauty of the improvisation. When a poet feels that his verse has truly reached the gathering, a piercing high cry rises above the drums — an expression of exhilaration and gratitude shared with the audience and dancers.

Nothing requires our travelers to remain spectators. You may sit on the rugs and listen, rise and dance, follow the poetry through interpretation, or simply watch the silhouettes moving between firelight and darkness.

The gathering belongs to everyone who is present.

Even the camels are welcome.

After days of learning how geography, community and music belong together, tonight we no longer need to explain the lesson.

We sit around the fire and experience it.

In the silence of the Sahara, the community finds its voice.

This morning we leave behind the dunes, date palms and oasis life of the Sahara and travel west toward the great valleys lying between the folds of the Atlas Mountains.

The transformation is remarkable.

Water returns to the landscape, flowing along lush riverbeds bordered by cultivated fields and villages. In the Dades Valley, greenery winds between extraordinary rock formations whose shapes seem almost sculpted rather than geological. Earthen kasbahs punctuate the valley, their walls rising from the same soil on which they stand until architecture and landscape appear to belong to one another.

As we continue toward Megouna, the landscape softens again.

Here, along the river valley, small agricultural plots are traditionally divided by hedges of Persian roses. When spring arrives and the roses are flowering, fragrance accompanies the landscape and shades of pink appear among the green fields.

Without exaggeration, for a brief moment it can feel like passing through heaven.

And once again, as the landscape changes, so does the music.

The Ahwash traditions of this region have a character all their own. Costumes become exceptionally colorful, the collective movements more elaborate, and the music carries an unmistakable sense of joy. Men and women move together in formations that appear beautifully choreographed, although their patterns belong naturally to a tradition learned and transmitted within the community.

After the austerity and vastness of the desert, the Ahwash of Megouna seems to celebrate abundance.

There is youth in it. There is vitality in it. And particularly in spring, when the valley is alive with roses and cultivation, music, movement and landscape seem to be celebrating the same season.

Yesterday, around the desert fire, we discovered how poetry can move the body until the knee bends.

Today the body seems to answer differently.

It rises to celebrate life.

Today we allow our eyes to lead us.

Traveling through the valleys toward Ouarzazate, we discover another expression of the culture of southern Morocco — not principally through ceremony or performance, but through the way people have learned to shape the land around them.

Water is the beginning of everything.

Along the river valleys, traditional canals carry it toward orchards, gardens and cultivated plots. Fig, almond, olive and fruit trees appear among fields protected by earthen walls and hedges. What might seem from a distance to be a harsh landscape reveals, on closer inspection, an extraordinary human geography of water, cultivation and care.

Kasbahs rise naturally from this landscape. Built from the earth beneath them, their walls, towers and geometric decoration demonstrate that practicality and beauty were never necessarily separate. These were places in which people lived, worked, stored harvests, raised families and protected what was valuable to them.

There is elegance here, but it is the elegance of everyday life.

We see it also in the women working among the fields and orchards, their garments and distinctive headdresses bringing unexpected colors into the greens, ochres and reds of the valley. Clothing changes from community to community, quietly revealing identity, geography and tradition.

And although today is more visual than musical, music never entirely leaves us.

A song may emerge while people work. A rhythm may begin at a gathering. Someone sings and another person answers. In these communities, music does not always wait for musicians, instruments or an appointed hour. Sometimes it simply happens.

We continue through this beautiful Berber hinterland toward Ouarzazate, taking time to notice the small things: how water moves, how gardens are protected, how houses emerge from the earth, how people dress, and how beauty finds its place within necessity.

After several days of listening to Morocco, today we discover that culture can speak without making a sound.

Sometimes, we listen with our eyes.

Today we leave the landscapes of the southern valleys and return gradually to urban life, crossing the High Atlas on our way to Marrakech.

Along the way, we visit Ait Ben Haddou, where earthen architecture rises from the landscape much as it has throughout our journey across the south. From here, the road climbs into the High Atlas before crossing Tizi n'Tichka and beginning its long descent toward the plains of Marrakech.

On the other side of the mountains, Morocco changes once again.

We return to the city — but what a city.

Marrakech is known affectionately as Al Bahja — the joyous, radiant city. After the quietness of the desert, the intimacy of the oasis and the measured life of the valleys, Marrakech seems to move to a rhythm of its own.

Here, music is difficult to contain within the idea of performance.

Listen to people talking to one another and conversation itself can become rhythmic — quick, provocative, humorous and theatrical. Watch the way people walk, gesture, bargain, greet one another and occupy the street, and the city begins to feel almost choreographed.

Marrakech does not merely have music.

Marrakech moves musically.

We have deliberately saved this city until near the end of our journey. By now, we have listened with Hmadcha and Issawa, entered the communal circle of Ahwash, sat around the desert fire with Rokba, and watched geography continually reshape sound, movement and community.

The traveler who arrives in Marrakech today is therefore not the same traveler who arrived in Morocco nine days ago.

You are ready to hear more.

As evening approaches, we enter Jemaa el-Fna and allow Al Bahja to reveal itself in its natural theater — storytellers and performers, conversation and laughter, movement, food, voices and rhythms overlapping one another.

Later, our musical journey continues with traditions associated with Marrakech and southern Morocco, including Dekka and Gnawa. But by now we understand that the evening's music does not stand apart from the city surrounding it.

It belongs to the same pulse. ** We began this journey by learning to listen.**

Tonight, Marrakech teaches us to listen to life itself.

Welcome to Al Bahja — the rhythm of life.

Our final full day in Morocco belongs to Marrakech.

We spend the morning exploring the historical city with our local guide, walking through its monuments, gardens, neighborhoods and Medina. But after everything we have experienced during this journey, we now look at Marrakech differently.

We have learned to listen.

Tonight, we bring the musical journey together.

We begin with Dekka Marrakchia — literally, the Marrakech beat. Born from the cultural life of the city, Dekka gathers voices, handclaps and different percussion rhythms into an increasingly animated conversation. One rhythm answers another, voices enter, the tempo gathers energy, and gradually individual sounds become part of a larger whole.

For our travelers, there may now be something familiar in this.

Throughout Morocco we have encountered music as devotion, poetry, celebration and community. We have heard the haunting ghaita of the mountains, entered the circles of Hmadcha and Issawa, followed Ahwash through changing landscapes, and sat beside the desert fire as Rokba joined poetry to movement.

In Dekka Marrakchia, those memories seem almost to meet again — not because the traditions are the same, but because rhythm has accompanied us all the way to Marrakech.

And then we turn from the beat toward harmony.

Our final musical encounter introduces Al-Ala, the great classical tradition commonly known as Moroccan Andalusian music. Here poetry, voice, melody, modes and instruments come together within a highly refined musical form whose heritage carries the memory of centuries of cultural movement between Al-Andalus and Morocco.

It is a fitting place for our journey to arrive.

We began by listening to individual traditions rooted in particular communities and landscapes. Gradually, we discovered relationships between them — between music and spirituality, rhythm and environment, poetry and movement, individual expression and the circle.

Tonight, Marrakech gives us both.

Dekka gives us the beat. Al-Ala gives us harmony.

And perhaps that is also what this journey has been about.

We arrived in Morocco listening for music.

We leave having discovered something larger: the rhythm of people living together, differently, within the same cultural landscape.

Many rhythms. One journey. And, finally, harmony.

After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and transfer to Casablanca Airport for your flight home.

Our journey through Morocco may be ending, but perhaps listening does not end so easily.

Over the past days, we have heard drums beside a desert fire and the haunting voice of the ghaita in the mountains. We have entered the circles of Hmadcha, Issawa, Ahwash and Rokba, listened to poetry answered through movement, shared couscous at a sanctuary, crossed landscapes where environment changes the sound of music, and finally arrived in Marrakech, where rhythm seems to enter everyday life itself.

But there were other sounds too — the ones we never planned.

A song heard in a souk. A celebration encountered along the road. Quranic recitation drifting through a sanctuary. The hammering of craftsmen. Conversation, laughter, footsteps, prayer, silence.

Perhaps these are the sounds that will return unexpectedly long after you have gone home.

We called this journey Morocco Heard.

But Morocco was never asking merely to be heard.

It was asking us to listen.

And listening is something we can take home with us.
