Marrakech express Tour

Welcome to Morocco.

We meet at our hotel in Casablanca at 3:30 pm, where your tour leader will welcome the group and introduce the journey ahead. Airport transfers can be arranged for travelers who require them.

Rather than rushing into a long list of sights on your first afternoon, we begin by getting acquainted with Casablanca and with one another.

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and its great Atlantic metropolis—a place shaped by commerce, migration, architecture and the country's encounter with modernity. Depending on arrival times, we will take an introductory walk or drive through parts of the city, allowing you to begin noticing a Morocco quite different from the historic medinas we will encounter later in the journey.

The evening is deliberately relaxed. After international travel, there is time to settle in, meet your fellow travelers and enjoy your first evening in Morocco.

Tomorrow morning, our journey begins in earnest with the Hassan II Mosque, standing dramatically beside the Atlantic, before we travel overland north to Rabat.

Tonight we arrive. Tomorrow, we take the road.

From the Atlantic Metropolis to Morocco's Capital

After breakfast, we begin at the Hassan II Mosque, one of Casablanca's defining landmarks, rising beside the Atlantic Ocean. Those wishing to visit the interior may join the guided visit, while others can enjoy time nearby.

The mosque gives us an interesting place to begin our journey. Although Casablanca is often described as Morocco's modern city, the Hassan II Mosque demonstrates how traditional Moroccan craftsmanship continues to find expression within contemporary architecture.

Later in the morning, we leave Casablanca and travel north along the Atlantic corridor to Rabat, Morocco's capital.

After checking into our hotel, we head toward the old city and the Souika, where small restaurants and food stalls provide an opportunity to choose lunch in a more local and informal way.

In the afternoon, a local guide introduces us to Rabat through some of the places that reveal its many historical layers. We visit the Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum, then continue to the Kasbah of the Udayas, overlooking the mouth of the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic.

Time permitting, we may also visit Chellah, where Roman remains and the later Marinid necropolis occupy the same remarkable site.

Rabat is quieter than Casablanca, but its history runs deep. Roman settlement, Islamic dynasties, Andalusian migration, the French Protectorate and modern Morocco have all left their traces here.

Our first overland day therefore introduces an idea that will accompany us throughout the journey:

Morocco is not one story, but many historical layers living beside one another.

From Imperial Power to Ancient Volubilis and Sacred Moulay Idriss

After breakfast, we leave Rabat and travel inland toward Meknes, watching the Atlantic landscape gradually give way to the agricultural plains of Morocco's interior.

Meknes introduces us to another chapter of Moroccan history. During the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail, the city became an imperial capital, surrounded by monumental gates, walls, granaries, gardens and vast royal complexes that expressed the ambitions of his reign.

With our local guide, we explore some of the city's historic quarters and monuments before continuing into the countryside.

The landscape now becomes part of the story.

Among rolling hills, olive groves and fertile farmland lie the ruins of Volubilis, one of Morocco's most important archaeological sites. Long before the arrival of Islam, this region was already connected to the wider Mediterranean world. Walking among its houses, mosaics, arches and public buildings allows us to see another layer of Morocco's long human history.

From Volubilis, we continue toward the whitewashed town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, dramatically spread across the slopes above us.

Here the journey moves from archaeology to living spiritual memory.

The town takes its name from Moulay Idriss I, whose arrival in Morocco in the late eighth century became closely associated with the beginnings of the Idrisid dynasty and the early formation of an Islamic Moroccan state. His sanctuary remains an important place of pilgrimage and devotion.

We spend the afternoon walking through the town's steep lanes, neighborhoods and viewpoints, discovering a place where spirituality is not confined to a monument but remains woven into everyday life.

Tonight we stay in Moulay Idriss, allowing us something that hurried visitors rarely experience: the town after the day-trippers have gone home.

From Roman stones to a living sacred town, today's journey reminds us that civilizations do not simply replace one another.

They leave traces—and sometimes those traces continue to live.

Yesterday we looked at Fez from the surrounding hills. Today, we enter it.

Only when you step into the labyrinth of the Medina of Fez do you begin to understand how different it is from almost anything you may have imagined.

With our local guide, we walk through narrow streets, covered passages, small squares and neighborhoods that have developed over more than twelve centuries. But Fez is not interesting simply because it is old.

Fez is not authentic because it has remained unchanged. It is authentic because it has remained alive.

People still live here. Bakers bake bread in neighborhood ovens. Craftsmen work in workshops inherited through generations. Goods move through streets too narrow for cars. Mosques, fountains, markets, schools and homes remain woven into the same urban fabric.

Our exploration takes us through some of the places that reveal the intellectual, spiritual and working life of the city: the Al-Qarawiyyin quarter, the Al Attarine Madrasa, Seffarine Square, traditional craft neighborhoods and the souks that continue to serve the people of Fez.

We also discover the city's celebrated pottery and tile traditions, not simply as beautiful objects to purchase, but as part of a larger system of craftsmanship in which knowledge passes from hand to hand and generation to generation.

Along the way, your guide will help interpret what we encounter: why neighborhoods developed around particular crafts, how water helped organize the medina, how religious and commercial life grew beside one another, and how a medieval urban structure continues to function in the twenty-first century.

There will also be time simply to walk, observe and allow Fez to reveal itself.

Because a city like Fez cannot be understood entirely through monuments.

Sometimes the street itself is the museum, the workshop, the marketplace and the classroom.

Into the Rif Mountains — Fez to Chefchaouen

After breakfast, we leave Fez and change the rhythm of our journey.

Today we travel as many Moroccans do, aboard a comfortable CTM coach to Chefchaouen. Your tour leader takes care of the arrangements, leaving you free to watch the country unfold beyond the window.

This change of transportation is intentional. Travel is not always about being separated from everyday life in a private vehicle. Sometimes sharing the road with local travelers gives us another small window into the country we have come to understand.

As we travel north, the landscape begins to change. The plains and hills around Fez gradually give way to the Rif Mountains, and by the time we reach Chefchaouen, we have entered a Morocco with a noticeably different geography, architecture and rhythm.

Set against the mountains, Chefchaouen grew from a small fortified settlement founded in the late fifteenth century and was later shaped by Andalusian and other communities who settled in the region.

After arrival and settling in, we explore the medina with a local guide. We walk through its narrow streets and small squares, discovering the houses for which Chefchaouen has become famous, but also looking beyond their blue walls to the life of the town itself.

At Ras El Ma, water descending from the mountains reminds us again of something we have encountered throughout this journey: settlements grow where geography makes life possible.

There is time to wander, enjoy the local markets and crafts, sit over a glass of mint tea, and experience Chefchaouen at a gentler pace.

If conditions and energy allow, those who wish may walk toward the Spanish Mosque viewpoint later in the day, where the town can be seen against the surrounding Rif landscape.

Fez taught us to look inward, into the complexity of a great historic city.

Chefchaouen asks us to look outward, toward the mountains.

Tangier — Crossroads of Continents, Then South by Night Train

After breakfast, we leave Chefchaouen and travel through the Rif Mountains toward Tangier.

The journey is part of the experience. Mountain settlements gradually give way to the approaches of the coast, and before long we arrive in a city whose personality has been shaped by something unusual: Tangier has always looked in more than one direction.

It looks toward Morocco and Africa behind it, toward the Mediterranean to the east, toward the Atlantic to the west, and across the Strait of Gibraltar toward Europe.

For centuries, geography made Tangier a meeting place.

With our local guide, we explore the Kasbah and Medina, walking through streets that carry traces of Moroccan, Andalusian, Mediterranean and international influences. We continue through the Grand Socco and the historic Marshan quarter, discovering a city that has long attracted merchants, diplomats, travelers, writers, artists and musicians.

We also visit the American Legation, a remarkable reminder of the long relationship between Morocco and the United States and of Tangier's former importance as an international diplomatic center.

But Tangier is more than the people who came from elsewhere.

There will be time to observe the city as it is lived today: its cafés, markets, streets and the constant movement of people through a place that still feels like a gateway.

Later in the day, we gather for dinner before making our way to the railway station.

And then comes the journey that gave this tour its name.

We board the overnight train to Marrakech, settle into our couchettes and begin traveling south through the Moroccan night.

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about sleeping on a train.

You leave one city in the evening. Stations appear and disappear outside the window. Somewhere during the night, landscapes change without you seeing them.

And in the morning, you wake somewhere else.

Our own route from Tangier is different from the train journey that inspired Graham Nash's famous Marrakesh Express, but perhaps the pleasure he captured remains the same: the simple excitement of crossing Morocco by train.

Tonight, the hotel does not wait for us at the end of the road.

Tonight, the road itself becomes our room.

Waking Up in Marrakech

Sometime during the night, the Rif Mountains, northern plains and cities have passed beyond our window.

This morning, we wake in Marrakech.

After arriving at the railway station, we have breakfast and continue to our hotel. The morning is deliberately unhurried, with time to freshen up and rest after the overnight journey.

Around midday, we meet our local guide and begin discovering Marrakech on foot.

The Koutoubia Mosque and its minaret provide a natural introduction to the city. Visible from many directions, the Koutoubia has helped define Marrakech's skyline for centuries and reminds us that the city's architecture was shaped not only to be inhabited, but also to orient those moving through it.

We continue to the Bahia Palace, where courtyards, gardens, carved plaster, painted cedar and zellij reveal another side of Moroccan architecture: spaces designed around shade, water, privacy and beauty.

From there, we enter the souks and working quarters of the medina.

As in Fez, craftsmanship remains part of the living city. But Marrakech has its own rhythm, colors and relationship with trade. We walk among workshops, markets and small streets, meeting the city through the people who continue to work within it.

Eventually, the medina leads us toward Jemaa el-Fna.

The square changes character throughout the day, but toward evening it becomes something else entirely. Food stalls appear, smoke rises from grills, musicians and performers gather, and people from across Marrakech converge upon a space that has served as one of the city's great meeting places for generations.

After eight days on the road, we have reached the city whose name has accompanied us from the beginning.

But perhaps the Marrakech Express was never simply about reaching Marrakech.

It was about everything Morocco revealed along the way.

Farewell to Morocco

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to Marrakech and to the journey we have shared across Morocco.

Depending on your departure arrangements, there may be time for a final coffee, a last walk through the neighborhood, or simply a quiet morning before checking out of the hotel.

Nine days ago, we met in Casablanca.

Since then, we have traveled by private vehicle, public coach, on foot and by overnight train. We have crossed cities and mountains, walked through ancient ruins and living medinas, encountered places of scholarship and spirituality, and watched Morocco change beyond our windows.

We arrived in Marrakech.

But the journey was never only about Marrakech.

The Marrakech Express was everything we discovered along the way.
