Women Active Tours to Morocco

Welcome to Morocco.

Upon arrival at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, you will be welcomed by your tour leader and introduced to the women with whom you will share the journey ahead.

From Casablanca, we travel north toward Rabat, following the Atlantic corridor through an increasingly green landscape of farmland, nurseries and growing towns.

There is no need to rush today.

After checking into our hotel in Rabat, there will be time to settle in, rest and become acquainted with one another. Depending on arrival times and the energy of the group, those who wish may join a gentle introductory exploration of Morocco's capital.

Rabat is a particularly good place to begin. Quieter than Casablanca and layered with history, the city brings together ancient settlement, Islamic dynasties, Andalusian influences, colonial-era architecture and the institutions of contemporary Morocco.

We may visit the Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum, before continuing to the Kasbah of the Udayas, overlooking the mouth of the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic.

If time permits, we may also visit Chellah, where ancient remains and the later Marinid necropolis reveal how different periods of Moroccan history came to occupy the same landscape.

But the purpose of this first afternoon is not to see everything.

It is simply to arrive.

Over our first evening together, we begin getting to know the women with whom we will walk, travel, eat and share experiences during the coming days.

Tomorrow, we leave the capital behind and turn north toward Ouazzane, Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains.

Tonight, nine women may arrive as travelers. Tomorrow, they begin the road as companions.

North to the Rif — Sacred Roads and the Blue City

After breakfast, we leave Rabat and travel north toward the Rif Mountains.

As the urban landscape recedes, the countryside becomes greener and more agricultural. Olive groves, cultivated hills and small communities begin to introduce us to northern Morocco and the Jbala country.

Our journey takes us through Ouazzane, a town whose importance cannot be understood through monuments alone.

Ouazzane developed into an important spiritual center associated with the Wazzaniyya Sufi tradition, attracting pilgrims, scholars and seekers from Morocco and beyond. Its religious heritage helped shape not only the town itself but also its relationships with communities throughout northern Morocco.

We spend time walking through Ouazzane and discovering its markets and neighborhoods before continuing deeper into the Rif landscape.

By afternoon, we reach Chefchaouen, nestled beneath the surrounding mountains.

The town is famous today for its blue-painted streets, but there is much more behind the color. Founded in the late fifteenth century, Chefchaouen was shaped over time by the mountain communities surrounding it and by Andalusian and other families who settled here.

We settle into our riad, owned and managed by a Moroccan woman, where we are welcomed with mint tea and homemade pastries.

It is a simple moment, but an important beginning to this particular journey.

During the coming days, some of our understanding of Morocco will come from monuments and historical places.

But much of it will come from tables, kitchens, markets, trails, conversations and the women who welcome us into their world.

Later, there will be time for a gentle walk through Chefchaouen's medina and perhaps toward Ras El Ma, where mountain water enters the town.

Tomorrow, we leave the streets behind and begin walking into the Rif.

**Walking into the Rif — Mountains, Villages & Women's Hospitality ** After breakfast, we leave Chefchaouen and travel deeper into the Rif Mountains, where today's journey gradually changes from driving to walking.

The blue streets are behind us now.

Ahead lies a landscape of cultivated slopes, forests, scattered settlements and mountain paths connecting communities that have lived with this terrain for generations.

We begin our walk through the Amergou region, taking time to understand the countryside rather than simply crossing it. Agriculture here follows the contours of the land, and villages, fields, water sources and pathways reveal how people have adapted their lives to the mountains.

Our walk continues through the area around Lalla Outka, with opportunities to stop, rest and enjoy the changing views across the Rif.

Along the way, we also encounter places associated with local spiritual traditions, including the shrine of Moulay Bouchta, whose memory has long been connected with musicians and popular religious culture in northern Morocco.

But today's most important encounter is not a monument.

We are welcomed by a local family and spend time with the women of the household.

This is an opportunity to sit together, talk, help where appropriate, observe the preparation of food and learn something about family life in the mountains—not through a staged demonstration, but through hospitality and conversation.

Dinner is prepared from local ingredients and shared together.

Tonight, we remain close to the landscape, camping in the Rif Mountains.

As daylight disappears, the experience becomes simpler: mountains, food, conversation, stars and the company of the women with whom we have traveled.

There is nowhere we need to hurry to.

Tonight, the destination is where we stop walking.

Across the Mountains — Markets, Women's Work & the Road to Taza

We wake in the mountains and begin the morning with a homemade breakfast prepared by our host household.

After sharing the previous evening together, breakfast gives us a final opportunity for conversation before saying goodbye to our hosts and continuing our journey.

Today we travel east across northern Morocco toward Taza.

This is a day for watching the landscape.

The road carries us through mountain country, forests, cultivated valleys and scattered villages. We stop along the way for gentle walks, allowing us to experience some of this changing geography on foot rather than only through the vehicle window.

One of today's most interesting stops is a local village market.

These rural souks are much more than places to buy and sell. On market day, people arrive from surrounding communities to trade produce, household goods, livestock and locally made products, but also to exchange news, maintain relationships and participate in the economic life of the region.

Here we pay particular attention to the role of women in the rural economy.

Depending on the market day and season, we may encounter women selling produce, food or handmade goods and see how skills practiced within households also become sources of income and exchange.

We do not enter the market looking for a performance.

We enter because the market is where life is already happening.

Later, we continue toward Taza, situated at one of Morocco's great natural passages between the Rif to the north and the Middle Atlas to the south.

After several days in smaller mountain communities, arriving in Taza introduces another kind of place—a historic city whose importance has always been closely connected to geography.

We settle into our hotel for dinner and a comfortable night's rest.

Tomorrow, the walking becomes more demanding as we enter the landscapes of Tazekka National Park and the Middle Atlas.

Into the Middle Atlas — Forests, Caves & Mountain Trails

After breakfast, we leave Taza and enter the mountain landscapes of Tazekka National Park, where today's journey is devoted primarily to walking and exploring the natural environment.

This is one of the more active days of our tour.

The landscape changes noticeably as we move into the Middle Atlas. Forested slopes, limestone formations, valleys and mountain settlements replace the gentler agricultural country of the previous day.

We travel toward Bab Boudir, stopping along the way to walk through sections of the forest and explore the relationship between geology, vegetation and human settlement in this remarkable region.

Depending on conditions and access, we visit the area around the Friouato cave system, one of the best-known natural features of the Tazekka region. Here the mountains reveal another history—not one measured in dynasties and monuments, but in limestone, water and geological time.

Our walking continues through the surrounding landscape, with time for a picnic lunch in nature.

As we move through forests and mountain paths, we also begin to notice how communities have adapted agriculture, grazing and settlement to terrain that offers both opportunities and limitations.

This is why we walk.

A mountain seen from a vehicle is scenery.

A mountain crossed on foot becomes geography.

By late afternoon, we return to our accommodation for a well-earned rest, dinner and conversation about the day's discoveries.

Tomorrow, we leave the high country and follow the landscape west toward Beni Sadden and Fez.

**From the Mountains to the Foothills of Fez ** After breakfast, we leave Taza and begin our journey west toward Fez, but once again, the road between the two cities is part of what we have come to experience.

We travel through the changing landscapes around El Menzel and Bir Tamtam, leaving the higher mountain country behind as forests gradually open into agricultural land, villages and the cultivated foothills east of Fez.

There will be opportunities along the way for short walks and stops in the countryside, allowing us to see how rural life changes with the landscape.

As we approach Beni Sadden, agriculture becomes increasingly important to the story.

Here, the countryside surrounding Fez supports farming communities whose lives have long been connected to orchards, fields, livestock, seasonal work and local markets. Much of that rural economy depends upon work that is shared within families, including work performed by women that is not always visible to the passing traveler.

Our destination tonight is a rural guesthouse in the Beni Sadden countryside.

After several days of walking through Morocco's mountain landscapes, this evening gives us time to stop and experience another rhythm of rural life.

Depending on the household and season, there may be opportunities to learn about food preparation, farming, gardens or other activities taking place around us.

Dinner is prepared locally and shared together.

There is no performance required of the evening.

Sometimes sitting around a table, asking questions, laughing, helping with the bread or simply listening tells us more about a place than another monument ever could.

And tomorrow morning, something remarkable happens.

From this rural landscape, we travel only a short distance—and enter one of the most complex historic cities in the Islamic world:

Fez.

Fez Through Women's Eyes — The Living Medina

After breakfast in our rural guesthouse, we make the short journey into Fez, where a Moroccan woman guide joins us for a full day exploring the historic medina.

We begin around Bab Ftouh, one of the traditional gateways into the old city.

From here, we enter a world very different from the mountain landscapes of the previous days.

Fez is a city of narrow streets and hidden courtyards, neighborhood fountains and workshops, mosques and madrasas, markets and family homes. For more than twelve centuries, these spaces have developed beside one another to create one of Morocco's most complex living cities.

But today we explore Fez with a particular question:

Where are the women in the story of the city?

Their presence is not always immediately visible in monuments or public squares.

We discover it instead through homes and neighborhoods, education and religious life, food and family traditions, embroidery and textiles, commerce and craftsmanship—and through the knowledge passed between generations.

Our walk takes us through the Al-Qarawiyyin quarter, whose history itself begins with the remarkable legacy of Fatima al-Fihri, traditionally credited with founding the Qarawiyyin Mosque in the ninth century.

We continue through some of the medina's great architectural and working spaces, including Al Attarine Madrasa, Seffarine Square, artisan quarters and traditional markets.

Along the way, our guide introduces us to women's contributions to Fez's textile traditions, particularly embroidery, weaving and other forms of skilled work historically practiced within households and workshops.

We also visit pottery and craft areas, where another generation of artisans continues to negotiate the relationship between inherited knowledge and contemporary economic life.

But Fez should never become merely a catalogue of crafts.

There will be time to stop, observe, ask questions and allow the medina to reveal the lives behind its walls.

Late in the afternoon, we leave the city and return to our rural guesthouse in Beni Sadden.

Tonight, we gather for a celebratory meal accompanied, when arranged, by local music and dance traditions from the surrounding region.

After days of walking together through mountains, villages, markets and homes, the evening is not simply entertainment.

It is another way communities remember who they are.

Walking Through Time — From Moulay Idriss to Volubilis

After breakfast, we leave the countryside around Fez and travel toward Mount Zerhoun, where the whitewashed town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun rises across the hills.

The town holds a special place in Moroccan history and spiritual memory. It takes its name from Moulay Idriss I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad whose arrival in Morocco in the late eighth century became closely associated with the beginnings of the Idrisid dynasty.

We explore the town on foot, climbing its narrow stepped streets and pausing at viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside.

Then we leave the town in a way particularly suited to this journey:

on foot.

We descend through the landscape of Mount Zerhoun, following paths through old olive groves and agricultural country toward the valley below.

Walking here allows us to see the relationship between two very different chapters of Moroccan history.

Above us stands Moulay Idriss, associated with the beginnings of Islamic Morocco.

Below us lies Volubilis, where the remains of an earlier city reveal Morocco's connections with the ancient Mediterranean world.

We stop along the way for a picnic lunch beneath the olive trees, with time to rest and enjoy the landscape we have been walking through.

Eventually, the ruins of Volubilis come into view.

With our guide, we explore the archaeological site, walking among ancient streets, houses, mosaics, arches and public buildings that tell us about life in this important city of Roman-era Mauretania Tingitana.

But after eight days together, perhaps we see these ruins differently.

We have walked through living villages, stayed with families, entered markets, crossed forests and mountains and explored Fez. We have seen repeatedly that history is not only what civilizations leave behind in stone.

It is also what people continue to carry.

Later in the afternoon, we leave Volubilis and travel to Casablanca for our final night together.

Tonight, we share one last evening as a group.

Tomorrow we say goodbye.

But today, we finish as we have traveled throughout this journey: on foot, through a landscape where human stories have accumulated for centuries.

Farewell to Morocco

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye.

Your tour leader will accompany the group for the transfer to Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, according to departure arrangements.

Nine days ago, we arrived as travelers.

Since then, we have walked together through mountain villages and forests, shared meals and conversations, visited rural markets, slept close to nature, entered the medina of Fez through women's stories, and followed an old landscape from Moulay Idriss through the olive groves to Volubilis.

But perhaps what we take home cannot be measured in kilometers walked or places visited.

It is found in the conversations around a table, the hospitality of people who welcomed us, the knowledge shared between women, the laughter along the trail, and the friendships that grew while traveling together.

Morocco will remain here.

But something of the journey travels home with each of us.

We arrived as travelers. We leave as companions.
