Where the Journey Begins — Tangier, Bowles & the Road into the Rif

Welcome to Morocco.

On arrival in Tangier, you will be met by your Sarah Tours tour leader and begin your journey in a city that has long stood between worlds.

Facing the Strait of Gibraltar, with the Mediterranean on one side and the Atlantic on the other, Tangier has for centuries been a meeting place of Morocco, Africa, Europe and the wider Mediterranean world.

It was also the Moroccan home of Paul Bowles, who settled here in 1947 and remained closely associated with the city for the rest of his life.

Writers, painters, musicians and travelers came to Tangier for many different reasons. Some were searching for freedom, some for inspiration, and others perhaps for distance from the worlds they already knew.

Bowles understood something about that desire to travel beyond the familiar.

But our journey does not remain in his Tangier.

This is where he introduces us to the road. Morocco will take us from here.

Depending on arrival time, we explore some of Tangier's historic quarters and viewpoints before leaving the coast and turning south into the Rif Mountains.

Almost immediately, the landscape begins to change.

The road winds through hills and cultivated valleys, past villages, olive groves and small agricultural plots. Tangier's maritime horizon gradually gives way to the enclosed geography of the mountains.

And this transition is important.

On the first day of the Sheltering Sky Tour, we begin to understand that traveling through Morocco is not simply about moving from one city to another.

Every change in landscape introduces another way of living.

By afternoon we reach Chefchaouen, the mountain town whose whitewashed and blue-painted houses climb the slopes beneath the Rif.

After settling into our guesthouse in the medina, we explore Chefchaouen on foot with a local guide.

We walk through its narrow lanes and neighborhood squares, passing houses, small workshops and local markets before reaching Ras El Ma, where water emerging from the mountain has long been part of the life of the town.

There is no need to hurry.

This evening is our first opportunity simply to walk, observe and become accustomed to the rhythm of Morocco.

Tomorrow, the road continues.

But tonight, beneath the Rif Mountains, we begin by learning how to arrive.

From the Rif to Zerhoun — Ancient Roads & Sacred Hills

After breakfast, we leave the blue lanes of Chefchaouen and travel south through the countryside toward the fertile plains surrounding Mount Zerhoun.

Yesterday, Morocco introduced us to the Rif Mountains.

Today, the landscape begins to reveal something else:

how many civilizations have traveled through it before us.

Our first major visit is Volubilis, one of Morocco's most important archaeological sites.

Long before Morocco existed as the country we know today, communities lived, farmed and traded across these fertile plains. Volubilis grew into an important city and later flourished under Roman rule as part of the province of Mauretania Tingitana.

Walking through the archaeological site, we encounter the remains of houses and public buildings, mosaics, olive presses, columns and monumental arches.

But ruins become more interesting when we ask why a city existed here in the first place.

The surrounding land provides part of the answer.

This was productive agricultural country, particularly suited to cereals and olives, connected through trade to a much larger Mediterranean world.

The stones tell us about Rome. The landscape tells us why people stayed.

From Volubilis, we continue toward the whitewashed town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, rising across the nearby hills.

Its story belongs to another chapter of Morocco.

The town is closely associated with Moulay Idriss I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad who arrived in Morocco in the late eighth century and became the founder of the Idrisid dynasty.

His presence helped establish a new political and spiritual center in the region, and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun remains one of Morocco's important pilgrimage towns.

We explore its steep lanes and small squares on foot, observing everyday life around a place whose sacred significance has endured for centuries. From the upper parts of town, the surrounding hills and plains open below us, including the countryside around Volubilis.

We do not need to enter every sacred space to understand its importance.

Sometimes it is enough to observe how a place continues to live around it.

Tonight we stay in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun.

From the ancient city below to the sacred town above, only a few kilometers separate the two.

Yet they belong to very different chapters of Morocco's story.

The landscape remained. The civilizations changed. The road connected them.

Approaching Fez — Before Entering the Labyrinth

After breakfast, we leave the sacred hills of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and continue toward Fez.

The distance is not great, but the journey brings us toward one of the most important cities in Moroccan history.

Fez cannot be understood only by entering its medina.

Before walking through its gates, we first need to understand why the city is here.

As we approach, the landscape begins to provide clues.

Fez developed where water, fertile land, surrounding hills and routes of movement came together. Over the centuries, these advantages helped the city become a center of trade, craftsmanship, scholarship and spiritual life.

On arrival, rather than immediately disappearing into the medina, we spend the afternoon discovering Fez from the outside.

We visit viewpoints overlooking Fez el-Bali, where the old city spreads across the valley below.

From here, what can seem like a maze at street level begins to reveal its geography.

We follow sections of the historic ramparts and gates and visit the area around the Royal Palace of Fez, whose monumental doors introduce another dimension of the city: Fez not only as a city of scholars and artisans, but as a center of political history and royal authority.

From Borj Sud, the relationship between the medina and its surrounding landscape becomes clearer.

Mosques and minarets rise above thousands of closely built houses. Hills enclose the city. Beyond them lie the agricultural lands and routes that connected Fez with the rest of Morocco and the wider world.

We are looking at a city that has grown, adapted and remained alive for more than twelve centuries.

But we have not entered it yet.

That is deliberate.

There are places that become more meaningful when we resist the temptation to rush inside.

This afternoon is about orientation—seeing the walls, understanding the valley, noticing the gates and allowing the scale of Fez to settle in our imagination.

Tomorrow we will enter on foot.

Tonight, we remain outside the labyrinth.

Before Fez asks us to lose ourselves in its streets, it allows us one afternoon to understand where we are.

Fez — Entering the Living City

Yesterday, we stood above Fez and looked across its roofs, walls, minarets and surrounding hills.

Today, we enter.

We begin on foot, passing through one of the historic gates and allowing the streets of Fez el-Bali to draw us gradually into the old city.

At first, Fez can seem bewildering.

Streets narrow into lanes. Lanes become passages. A doorway opens unexpectedly into a courtyard. The sound of metalworkers announces a workshop before we see it. Water appears in neighborhood fountains. Bread disappears into communal ovens and returns warm. Children make their way to school while merchants open shops that may have belonged to the same family for generations.

There is no single street from which Fez can be understood.

The city reveals itself through relationships.

Water made neighborhoods possible. Neighborhoods supported mosques, fountains, bakeries and hammams. Markets developed around particular trades. Crafts depended upon networks of apprentices, merchants and families. Scholarship grew beside commerce, spirituality beside ordinary domestic life.

Nothing existed entirely alone.

Our walk takes us toward the Al-Qarawiyyin quarter, the intellectual and spiritual heart of the old city.

Here stands the Qarawiyyin Mosque, traditionally founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri. Over the centuries, the institution that developed around it became one of the great centers of Islamic scholarship in the western Muslim world.

But learning in Fez was never confined to a single building.

Nearby madrasas, libraries, mosques, bookshops and circles of scholars formed an intellectual landscape within the city itself.

At the exquisite Al Attarine Madrasa, we stop not simply to admire zellij, carved plaster and cedarwood, but to consider the purpose behind such beauty.

Why surround a place of learning with extraordinary craftsmanship?

Perhaps because in the civilization that created it, beauty and knowledge were not strangers to one another.

We continue through Seffarine Square, where the rhythmic sound of metalworkers reminds us that Fez is not a museum preserved behind glass.

People still work here.

Throughout the medina we encounter artisans practicing crafts for which Fez has long been known—metalwork, leather, weaving, embroidery, woodcarving, ceramics and zellij.

Some techniques have endured. Others have changed. New generations negotiate constantly between inheritance and livelihood.

And that is precisely why Fez remains interesting.

Fez is not authentic because it has remained unchanged. It is authentic because it has remained alive.

We make time for the markets as well.

Not simply to shop, but to notice.

Spices, vegetables, olives, fabrics, household goods, workshops, food stalls and neighborhood commerce remind us that behind the monumental Fez exists another city—the one whose inhabitants wake every morning and simply get on with life.

Lunch gives us another doorway into the city.

Fassi cuisine developed from the same history of movement and exchange that shaped Fez itself. Ingredients, techniques and tastes carry memories of Andalusia, the Mediterranean, the countryside surrounding the city and generations of family kitchens.

During the afternoon, we continue walking without trying to turn every corner into an attraction.

Sometimes we stop because something is beautiful.

Sometimes because someone is making something.

Sometimes because our guide has a story.

And sometimes simply because the street itself is the museum, the workshop, the marketplace and the classroom.

By late afternoon, we emerge from the medina.

Yesterday, from above, Fez looked almost impossible to understand.

Today we have discovered that perhaps Fez was never meant to be understood from a distance.

It must be walked.

It must be listened to.

And, for a little while, it must be lived.

Tonight, over dinner, the city may still feel like a labyrinth.

But perhaps we now understand something important:

The labyrinth was never the confusion of Fez. It was the way Fez learned to hold a civilization together.

Beyond Fez — When the Horizon Begins to Open

This morning, we leave Fez behind.

For several days, our journey has taken us through cities—Tangier, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Fez—places where human history has accumulated layer upon layer.

Today, something changes.

The buildings begin to disappear, and the land takes over.

We travel south toward the Middle Atlas Mountains, gradually climbing from the plains around Fez into a cooler landscape of hills, forests and high plateaus.

We pass through Ifrane, whose architecture and mountain climate reveal yet another unexpected face of Morocco, before continuing toward Azrou and the great cedar forests of the Middle Atlas.

Here, among some of North Africa's most remarkable cedar landscapes, we may encounter Barbary macaques living in the forest.

But the animals are only part of the story.

The forest itself tells us about altitude, rainfall and climate—and about the pastoral communities that have moved through these mountains for generations.

As we continue south, the landscape changes again.

Forests become high plateaus.

Villages become farther apart.

The road crosses country where seasonal movement, grazing and agriculture have long shaped human life.

We do not stage encounters with nomadic families.

If an opportunity arises naturally and respectfully, our guide may help us understand something of these pastoral traditions. But today the landscape itself already tells much of the story.

Then we begin to descend.

Mountain water gathers into valleys, and eventually the green ribbon of the Ziz Valley appears below us.

Palm groves follow the river through an increasingly arid landscape.

The contrast is striking.

Here, water does not merely beautify the land.

Water decides where life is possible.

Villages, fields and date palms cluster where irrigation and human ingenuity have made settlement possible. Beyond them, the earth stretches dry toward the horizon.

We continue through Errachidia and the Ziz country, following the old geographical corridor toward Erfoud and the desert.

By now Fez feels very far away.

The cedar forests are behind us.

The mountains have opened into plains.

The architecture has changed.

The vegetation has changed.

Even the light seems different.

Eventually, near Merzouga, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise ahead.

Here we leave our vehicle and, according to conditions and arrangements, continue toward our desert camp.

There is no need to manufacture drama.

The desert provides its own.

As the sun lowers, shadows lengthen across the dunes and the enormous sky that has accompanied us throughout the journey suddenly seems larger.

Tonight, we eat together at camp.

There may be music around the fire, conversation, laughter—or perhaps simply a period when nobody feels the need to say very much.

Because after a day of crossing Morocco from forest to plateau, valley to oasis, and oasis to desert, we arrive somewhere where absence itself becomes a presence.

Few buildings.

Few lights.

Few distractions.

Just earth and sky.

And perhaps, for the first time since Tangier, the title of our journey quietly returns.

The farther the horizon moves away from us, the more room there seems to be beneath the sheltering sky.

From Desert to Kasbah Country — Following the Geography of Water

Morning comes differently in the desert.

For those who wish to rise early, there is time to walk onto the dunes and watch the first light move across Erg Chebbi.

At this hour, the desert has not yet accumulated the sounds of the day.

The dunes change color slowly. Shadows retreat. The horizon becomes visible again.

After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and begin traveling west.

Yesterday we followed water toward the desert.

Today, strangely enough, we follow water out of it.

Our road crosses the arid landscapes of southeastern Morocco toward Tinghir, where the green ribbon of the oasis appears almost suddenly against the surrounding earth.

From a viewpoint above the valley, the relationship becomes visible.

Palm groves and cultivated fields follow the course of water. Villages occupy the edges of productive land. Beyond them rise dry mountains and plateaus.

What from a distance looks like a beautiful oasis is, in reality, the result of generations of knowledge.

The oasis is not simply where water exists. It is where people learned how to share it.

We continue into the Todgha Valley, where the landscape narrows dramatically between towering limestone walls.

There is time to walk through the gorge and along sections of the valley, allowing us to experience the scale of the landscape on foot.

But once again, the geology is only half the story.

Water emerging from the mountains has helped sustain agriculture and settlement downstream, linking the dramatic gorge to the gardens, palms and communities of the valley.

After lunch, we continue west toward Boumalne Dadès and the Dadès country.

The road now passes through a remarkable succession of valleys, cultivated plots, earthen villages and fortified architecture.

Here the color of buildings seems to emerge directly from the earth.

That is not accidental.

For centuries, people built with materials close at hand—earth, stone, timber and palm—creating houses, villages and fortified structures adapted to climate, available resources and community life.

As we travel toward Kelaat M'Gouna, we enter country associated with rose cultivation. In spring, roses appear along fields and hedgerows; at other times of year, their distilled waters, oils and other products remain part of the local economy.

The roses are beautiful.

But here, as elsewhere on our journey, beauty also has a livelihood behind it.

Our road continues toward Ouarzazate, following the broad corridor between the Atlas Mountains and the desert landscapes to the south.

The farther we travel, the more the architecture begins to tell the same story as the geography.

Water determines cultivation.

Cultivation influences settlement.

Climate influences architecture.

Roads create exchange.

And slowly, what tourists sometimes call the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” becomes something more meaningful than a picturesque name.

It becomes evidence of how people learned to inhabit a demanding landscape.

By evening, we arrive in Ouarzazate and settle into our hotel for dinner and rest.

Yesterday, beneath the dunes, the desert seemed almost empty.

Today we have discovered something different.

The desert was never empty. We simply had to learn where to look for life.

Across Southern Morocco — Kasbahs, Saffron & the Road to the Souss

After breakfast, we leave Ouarzazate and continue west across southern Morocco.

Our first major stop is Aït Ben Haddou, where a fortified earthen settlement rises above the valley along one of the historic routes connecting the Sahara and southern Morocco with Marrakech beyond the High Atlas.

We explore the ksar on foot, climbing gradually through its narrow passages and earthen buildings toward the upper part of the settlement.

From above, the reason for its location becomes clearer.

The river valley, cultivated land, mountains and old route all meet here.

Aït Ben Haddou is famous today for its appearances in films, but long before cameras arrived, this landscape belonged to travelers, merchants, families and caravans.

Hollywood discovered the scenery. The caravan knew the geography.

We return to the road and continue toward Taznakht, a town known particularly for the weaving traditions of the surrounding region.

Here, textiles are more than decorative objects.

Wool, color, pattern and technique carry knowledge passed through generations, particularly among women whose weaving has long been part of household life and the rural economy.

We continue toward Taliouine, where another relationship between people and land becomes visible.

This is Morocco's principal saffron-growing region.

The precious spice comes from a small crocus whose flowers are harvested carefully by hand, traditionally during a short season of the year. When circumstances allow, we learn about saffron production and the work involved in transforming a delicate flower into one of the world's most valued spices.

Again, the landscape is producing more than scenery.

It is producing livelihood.

After lunch, we continue toward the Souss, and once again Morocco begins changing around us.

The arid landscapes of the previous days gradually give way to broader agricultural plains. Villages, fields and orchards appear more frequently, and the distinctive argan tree begins to become part of the landscape.

Rather than treating argan as simply another Moroccan product, we begin to understand the tree as part of an ecological and human system—adapted to a dry environment and connected with food, agriculture and rural livelihoods.

By late afternoon, the walls of Taroudant appear.

We settle into our guesthouse and allow the evening to slow down.

Tomorrow we will explore the city properly.

For now, it is enough to recognize how far we have traveled.

Only yesterday morning we woke among the dunes.

Since then, we have followed valleys and rivers, passed earthen settlements, crossed weaving country and saffron fields, and entered the agricultural world of the Souss.

The road has not simply brought us somewhere new.

It has shown us why Morocco keeps changing.

Taroudant — Behind the Walls of the Souss

After several days of moving across mountains, desert and valleys, today we stay in one place.

And that change of rhythm is part of the journey.

After breakfast, a local guide joins us to explore Taroudant, the historic walled city of the Souss.

From outside, the city's long earthen ramparts immediately establish its presence. Gates open through the walls into streets, neighborhoods and markets that have connected Taroudant with the surrounding countryside for centuries.

But rather than beginning with monuments, we begin with a simple question:

What is the relationship between this city and the land around it?

Yesterday, the road brought us through saffron country, weaving communities, argan landscapes and the agricultural plains of the Souss.

Today, much of that countryside arrives in the city.

We walk through Taroudant's souks and markets, where agricultural products, spices, household goods, clothing, leatherwork and crafts reveal the commercial relationship between the town and the communities around it.

A market is never only a place where things are sold.

It is where countryside and city meet.

Farmers bring what the land produces. Artisans bring what their hands make. Merchants connect one region with another. News travels with people. Relationships are renewed.

The souk is commerce, but it is also conversation.

As we continue through the old city, we explore its neighborhoods, gates and ramparts and learn about Taroudant's place in the history of southern Morocco and the Souss.

Its importance has changed over the centuries as dynasties, trade routes and political centers changed around it.

Yet Taroudant continues to serve the region that surrounds it.

And perhaps that continuity is more interesting than calling the city “untouched” or “authentic.”

Taroudant has changed.

It simply continued being Taroudant while it changed.

There is time during the day to meet artisans and observe some of the skills practiced in the city, depending on what workshops are active during our visit.

Lunch introduces another expression of the Souss through its food.

Then the afternoon deliberately slows.

There may be time to continue exploring the markets, walk along sections of the ramparts, sit over mint tea, visit a workshop or simply watch the ordinary rhythm of the city.

We do not need to fill every hour.

After seven days on the road, time itself becomes part of the journey.

Later we return to our accommodation for dinner.

Tomorrow we leave the walls of Taroudant and follow the argan country toward the Atlantic.

But tonight, we remain in the Souss.

Not as spectators searching for something exotic.

Simply as travelers who have finally stayed somewhere long enough to notice how it works.

Toward the Atlantic — Through the Argan Country to Essaouira

After breakfast, we leave the walls of Taroudant and turn west toward the Atlantic.

The road carries us through the Souss and argan country, where one of Morocco's most distinctive trees becomes part of the landscape.

The argan tree survives in conditions that would challenge many other species. Its roots reach deeply for water, its branches provide shade, its fruit supports rural livelihoods, and for generations communities have developed knowledge around its many uses.

Where appropriate, we stop to learn about the production of argan oil and the work of the women whose cooperatives have become an important part of the regional economy.

But the argan tree is more than a product.

It belongs to an entire landscape of agriculture, grazing, ecology and human adaptation.

As we continue west, another change begins.

The air becomes softer.

The horizon opens.

And eventually, after days of mountains, desert, valleys and enclosed cities, we reach the Atlantic Ocean.

Ahead lies Essaouira.

Historically known as Mogador, the city developed as an Atlantic port connecting Morocco with commercial networks reaching into Europe, the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa.

Its personality is immediately different from the places we have visited before.

The wind moves through the streets.

Gulls circle above the harbor.

Blue fishing boats gather beside the quays.

The smell of salt replaces the dust of the interior.

After settling into our accommodation, we explore the city on foot.

We begin around the port, where fishing remains part of Essaouira's everyday life, before entering the medina through its fortified walls.

Along the Skala, Atlantic waves break below the ramparts while the horizon stretches almost without interruption.

Inside the medina, we walk through markets, workshops and residential streets and discover some of the many communities that have contributed to Essaouira's history.

Muslim and Jewish traditions, merchants and fishermen, craftspeople and travelers all left their traces here.

The city's artisans became particularly known for working with thuya wood, while musicians, painters and other artists have continued to give Essaouira a creative identity extending well beyond its walls.

There is time to explore without rushing.

Perhaps we stop for fresh seafood near the port.

Perhaps we sit over tea.

Perhaps we simply walk until the Atlantic appears unexpectedly at the end of a street.

After so many days traveling across the interior of Morocco, reaching the ocean feels significant.

The Sahara gave us a horizon of earth.

Essaouira gives us a horizon of water.

And between them lies almost the whole journey we have traveled.

Tonight, we remain beside the Atlantic.

The road could go no farther west. So we stop and listen to the sea.

From the Atlantic to Marrakech — Returning to the City

This morning, we leave Essaouira and the Atlantic behind and turn inland toward Marrakech.

Yesterday, our journey reached the ocean.

Today, the road turns back toward the interior.

As we travel east, the Atlantic air gradually gives way to the drier landscape of inland Morocco. The horizon changes again, and eventually the distant outline of the High Atlas Mountains begins to appear.

Those mountains will become part of tomorrow's journey.

But first, Marrakech.

After arriving and settling into our accommodation, we begin exploring the city on foot with our local guide.

Marrakech has accompanied the imagination of travelers for generations, but like every city on this journey, we are interested not only in what it looks like.

We want to understand why it became what it is.

Founded in the eleventh century, Marrakech developed at a strategic meeting point between the plains, the High Atlas Mountains and routes leading toward southern Morocco and the Sahara.

The city grew because people, goods, ideas and power moved through it.

We begin near the Koutoubia Mosque, whose great minaret has watched over Marrakech for centuries.

Its architectural language connects Marrakech to a wider Almohad world, echoed across the Strait of Gibraltar in monuments such as the Giralda in Seville.

But resemblance is more interesting when understood as relationship.

Architecture traveled because civilizations did.

From the Koutoubia, we continue into the medina and visit the Bahia Palace, where courtyards, gardens, carved cedar, painted ceilings, plaster and zellij reveal another expression of Moroccan architecture.

We do not need to declare it greater than the Alhambra, as the old itinerary does.

Beauty does not require a competition.

From the palace, we enter the souks.

Here Marrakech becomes less monumental and more human.

Workshops, merchants, food sellers, craftspeople, neighborhood streets and small exchanges remind us again that a medina is not simply an attraction.

It is an organism.

And eventually the streets release us into Jemaa el-Fna.

During the day, the square seems spacious.

Toward evening, it changes.

Food stalls appear. Smoke rises into the air. Musicians gather. People form circles around performers and storytellers. Families, travelers, vendors and residents move through the same enormous public space.

Jemaa el-Fna is difficult to explain because it was never designed to be watched from a distance.

The square only becomes itself when people arrive.

There is time this evening simply to experience Marrakech—to eat, walk, listen, observe or find a terrace and watch the square change below us.

Ten days ago, we began in Tangier beneath a sky that opened toward Europe.

Since then, we have crossed mountains and cities, Roman ruins and sacred hills, cedar forests and desert dunes, oases and kasbah country, the Souss and the Atlantic coast.

Now we are back inside the intensity of a great Moroccan city.

But perhaps we are not looking at it in quite the same way.

The traveler who arrives in Marrakech today is not quite the traveler who arrived in Tangier.

The Road Across the Mountains — Power, Caravans & the High Atlas

After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and travel south toward the High Atlas Mountains.

From the plains, the mountains can appear almost like a wall.

But mountains are rarely simply barriers.

For centuries, people crossed them.

Merchants carried goods between the Sahara, southern Morocco and the cities of the north. Villages developed along routes and valleys. Animals carried loads over difficult terrain. Political power grew around those who could protect, tax or control important passages.

Today we follow one of those historic corridors into the High Atlas.

The road climbs gradually toward Tizi n'Tichka, crossing an increasingly dramatic landscape of valleys, exposed slopes and mountain settlements.

As we gain altitude, Marrakech disappears behind us.

We stop along the way not simply for photographs, but to look at how people have adapted to the mountains—where villages were built, how land was cultivated and why particular routes became important.

From the main road, we continue toward Telouet.

Here stands the great Kasbah of Telouet, associated with the powerful Glaoui family, whose influence extended across parts of southern Morocco and the High Atlas during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The kasbah tells a complicated story.

From outside, sections appear austere and weathered.

Inside, surviving rooms reveal extraordinary craftsmanship—zellij, carved plaster, painted cedar and decorative work of remarkable refinement.

The contrast is striking.

But Telouet is more than architecture.

Its location helps explain its history.

The Glaoui did not become powerful merely because they possessed an impressive kasbah.

Power followed the road.

Control of mountain routes meant influence over movement, commerce and communication between regions.

And long before motor vehicles crossed these mountains, caravans understood every pass, water source and stopping place along the way.

We continue through the mountain country toward Taddert, stopping for lunch and allowing time to experience the High Atlas at a slower pace.

Short walks, according to conditions, give us an opportunity to leave the vehicle and feel the scale of the landscape around us.

By afternoon, we begin descending toward Marrakech.

It is our final road journey together.

And perhaps the mountains allow us to see the entire Sheltering Sky journey differently.

We have crossed Morocco through cities, forests, plains, deserts, oases and coastlines.

Again and again, what first appeared to be an obstacle became a route.

A desert became a network of oases.

A river created agriculture.

A mountain pass connected worlds.

Geography did not merely surround Moroccan civilization. Moroccan civilization learned how to move through it.

By evening, we return to Marrakech for our farewell dinner.

Tomorrow we leave Morocco.

Tonight, there is nowhere else we need to reach.

Farewell to Morocco — Beneath the Same Sky

After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and travel toward Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport for our departing flights.

The road carries us north across the plains.

There are no monuments to collect today.

No medina to navigate.

No mountain to cross.

Just the road.

Twelve days ago, we arrived in Tangier and began traveling south through Morocco.

Since then, the journey has taken us through the Rif and the sacred hills of Zerhoun, into the labyrinth of Fez, across cedar forests and the Middle Atlas, through the Ziz Valley to the Sahara, then west through oases, kasbah country, the Souss and finally the Atlantic coast.

We returned inland to Marrakech and crossed once more into the High Atlas.

But perhaps a journey should not end with a list of where we have been.

What matters is what we learned to notice along the way.

Water where there seemed to be only desert.

A market as a meeting place.

A mountain as a passage rather than a barrier.

A city as a web of relationships.

A road as something more than the distance between two destinations.

And people everywhere making a life from the landscape beneath them.

In Tangier, Paul Bowles introduced us to the road.

Morocco took us from there.

Now the road brings us back.

We say Besslama to Morocco and to the companions with whom we have shared the journey.

And perhaps The Sheltering Sky leaves us with one final thought.

The sky above us has been there all along.

It was the traveler beneath it who kept changing.
