Overview
Morocco changes dramatically when we leave the familiar roads behind.
The Morocco Mountains, Steppes & Sahara Overland Tour travels through some of the country's least-visited landscapes, crossing mountain ranges, high plateaus, pastoral country, remote settlements and the open spaces of eastern and southern Morocco before reaching the Sahara.
This is not a journey built around a collection of famous sights. The land itself is the journey.
As we travel, the geography continually changes. Mountain valleys open onto broad steppes. Forested slopes give way to grazing country. Villages become smaller and farther apart. Cultivated land gradually surrenders to stone, sand and the immense horizons of the desert.
But these landscapes are not empty.
For generations, pastoral communities, farmers, traders and nomadic families have learned how to live within environments that demand mobility, knowledge of water, careful use of pasture and an intimate understanding of the seasons.
Travelling overland allows us to begin seeing these relationships.
We follow secondary roads and tracks through places rarely included in conventional Morocco itineraries, stopping to walk when the landscape asks us to slow down. Along the way there may be mountain trails, isolated villages, weekly markets, grazing lands, oases and encounters with people whose lives remain closely connected to the country through which we are travelling.
The purpose is not to search for an Morocco supposedly "untouched by time." These regions are changing, as everywhere changes.
What makes the journey remarkable is the opportunity to see how people continue to adapt to the land—and how the land continues to shape human life.
Eventually, the steppes begin to open toward the Sahara.
Here distance acquires another meaning. Settlements become fewer, horizons wider and silence becomes part of the experience.
For Sarah Tours, overland travel has never simply meant reaching remote places.
It means understanding what lies between them.
**Because sometimes the road between two destinations is the destination. **
