Morocco Mountains, Steppes, and Sahara Tour

Upon arrival at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, meet your Sarah Tours guide and driver and begin the journey north and inland toward Fez.

The first day is intentionally gentle. After a long international flight, there is no need to begin Morocco with a checklist of monuments. Instead, the road itself provides the first introduction to the country.

Leaving the Atlantic plains around Casablanca, we travel through Morocco's agricultural heartland toward the foothills surrounding Fez. Along the way, your guide will introduce the geography of the journey ahead and explain how dramatically the landscapes will change over the coming days—from cultivated plains and mountain ranges to the eastern steppes, oasis valleys and eventually the Sahara.

Depending on your arrival time, we may stop at Volubilis and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun on the way to Fez. For later arrivals, these visits will not be rushed simply to satisfy an itinerary; the priority is to arrive comfortably in Fez.

In the late afternoon or evening, we reach Fez and settle into a small guesthouse within or near the historic medina.

Over dinner, we gather for an informal introduction to the journey ahead.

Tomorrow we will enter Fez on foot.

But tonight, there is nothing more required of you than to arrive.

The journey has begun.

After breakfast, we begin our exploration of Fez, one of Morocco's great centers of history, craftsmanship, spirituality and learning.

Before entering the medina, we first look at the city from the surrounding heights. From the Merenid Tombs, the old city spreads below us as a dense landscape of roofs, minarets, courtyards and walls.

From here, Fez begins to make sense.

The city grew where water, trade routes, fertile land, religious life and human knowledge could meet. For more than twelve centuries, generations have continually adapted this urban world without destroying the relationships that gave it life.

We then descend toward the medina and continue on foot.

Passing through its gates, we enter a city where streets narrow into lanes, workshops open directly onto the path, neighborhood fountains still mark the presence of water, and craftsmen continue working within trades inherited and transformed across generations.

Our walk leads through artisan quarters and traditional markets toward Nejjarine Square, Souk el Henna, the Al-Qarawiyyin quarter, Al Attarine Madrasa and Seffarine Square, where metalworkers, carpenters, leather workers, merchants and food sellers reveal another dimension of the city.

But Fez is not a museum.

Fez is not authentic because it has remained unchanged. It is authentic because it has remained alive.

There will therefore be time simply to walk and observe: a mule carrying supplies through a narrow street, bread disappearing into a neighborhood oven, the sound of metal from a workshop, people stopping to exchange news, and goods moving through a city whose streets were shaped long before motor vehicles existed.

We also explore the intellectual and spiritual landscape surrounding Al-Qarawiyyin and the sanctuary of Moulay Idriss II, whose presence became inseparable from the historical identity of Fez.

Later, we are welcomed into a local home for traditional mint tea—an opportunity to leave the public city for a moment and experience another essential Moroccan space: the home.

We return to our guesthouse in the late afternoon.

Tomorrow we leave the density of Fez behind and travel east.

The streets will become roads. The houses will become villages. And eventually, the horizon will begin to open.

Today we leave Fez and begin our overland journey east.

As the city falls behind us, the landscape gradually takes command. Cultivated plains give way to hills and increasingly rugged country as we travel toward Taza, historically positioned at one of Morocco's great natural passages between the Rif Mountains to the north and the Middle Atlas to the south.

This geography explains much of Taza's importance.

For centuries, people, armies, traders and travelers moving between eastern and western Morocco passed through this natural corridor. Taza was not simply a town along the road. The road existed because the geography made passage here possible.

Rather than rushing through the region, we take time to explore its surrounding landscapes, stopping where appropriate for short walks, viewpoints and encounters along the way.

The country here begins to prepare us for what lies ahead. Villages become smaller, mountains more prominent, and the relationship between settlement and land becomes increasingly visible.

On arrival in Taza, we explore the town and its surroundings before settling in for the evening.

Tomorrow, the journey changes again.

We will leave this mountain corridor and begin travelling into the broad landscapes of eastern Morocco, where cultivated country gradually gives way to high plateaus, pastoral lands and the steppes.

Today we leave the city behind. Tomorrow, the horizon begins to open.

Today we leave Taza and travel east and south toward Figuig, crossing one of the least-visited landscapes of Morocco.

Beyond Taza, the country begins to open. The mountains gradually recede, cultivated land becomes more scattered, and the horizon expands into the broad plateaus and steppes of eastern Morocco.

This is a landscape that rewards attention.

At first it may appear empty, but the longer we travel through it, the more we begin to see. Grazing lands, isolated settlements, wells and springs, distant flocks and the occasional movement of pastoral families reveal a geography where life has learned to exist with little water and enormous space.

We travel through the Guercif region and continue across the high plateaus, stopping along the way to walk, observe the landscape and enjoy lunch in the open country.

As we continue south through Tendrara and Bouarfa, the environment becomes increasingly arid. Distances between settlements grow longer and the road itself becomes part of our understanding of eastern Morocco.

This is why we travel overland.

A flight could take us somewhere else. A faster road could simply deliver us to a destination. But neither would allow us to watch the country change beneath our feet.

Late in the day, something remarkable begins to appear against the arid landscape.

Palm trees.

We are approaching Figuig, one of Morocco's great historic oasis settlements near the Algerian frontier.

After a day of stone, steppe and immense horizons, the sudden presence of a green oasis reveals one of the oldest lessons of desert geography:

Where there is water, human life gathers around it.

We settle in Figuig for the night.

Tomorrow, we leave the vehicles behind for a while and enter the oasis on foot.

Today we leave the long road behind and explore Figuig on foot.

Surrounded by an immense arid landscape near Morocco's eastern frontier, Figuig exists because of something both simple and precious:

water.

From the higher ground, we descend toward the oasis, where thousands of palms transform the landscape below us. After yesterday's journey across the open steppes, the contrast is striking. Stone and distance suddenly give way to shade, gardens and human settlement.

Walking through the oasis allows us to understand what cannot be seen from a vehicle.

We explore the palm groves and old ksour, including Zenaga, following paths that have connected homes, gardens and cultivated land for generations.

Here, water is more than a natural resource. It has shaped agriculture, settlement, architecture and community life. The oasis is therefore not simply a beautiful patch of green in the desert. It is a carefully maintained human landscape built upon generations of knowledge about how to live in an arid environment.

Along the way, we observe traditional earthen architecture and the relationship between the compact settlements and the gardens surrounding them.

At midday, we are welcomed by a local family for lunch and an opportunity to experience Figuig through hospitality rather than sightseeing alone.

The afternoon is deliberately unhurried. We continue walking through the oasis, with time to observe, photograph, talk and simply enjoy the shade of the palms.

By the end of the day, yesterday's lesson becomes clearer.

The steppe taught us the importance of space. Figuig teaches us the importance of water.

Today we leave Figuig and continue south and west toward Merzouga, travelling through a changing landscape of high desert plateaus, oasis settlements and palm-filled valleys.

It is a long overland day, but the distance is part of the experience.

Leaving the green world of Figuig behind, we return to the open country and travel toward Boudnib, an old oasis settlement on the eastern approaches to the Tafilalet region.

As we continue, water once again begins to transform the landscape.

Around Meski and the Ziz Valley, palms and cultivated fields appear between the arid mountains. Depending on time and conditions, we stop to walk through the oasis landscape and observe how settlements, gardens and irrigation have developed along the precious corridors of water.

The contrast is one of the great pleasures of travelling through this part of Morocco. Beyond the cultivated valley lies seemingly barren country; within it, water creates gardens, date palms, villages and life.

We continue through the Tafilalet, a region whose oases and settlements were historically connected to the great caravan routes crossing the Sahara.

Then, toward the end of the day, the landscape changes once more.

On the horizon rise the great dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.

After days of mountains, steppes, rocky plateaus and oases, we have finally reached the great sand landscape most travelers imagine when they hear the word Sahara.

But we have reached it differently.

We have watched the Sahara arrive.

Tonight we settle into our desert camp near the dunes, with dinner beneath the open sky.

We rise early in Merzouga to watch the first light reach the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

After breakfast, we leave the sand behind and travel toward Rissani and the Tafilalet, one of Morocco's great historic oasis regions and an important crossroads in the long history of trans-Saharan trade.

From here, our journey continues west toward Tinghir and the Todgha Valley.

The landscape changes dramatically.

The open desert gives way to cultivated oasis country, and then the immense rock walls of the Todgha Gorge begin to close around us. Water has cut its way through the mountains here, creating not only the gorge but also the conditions for agriculture and settlement along the valley below.

We stop to walk through part of this remarkable landscape, with time to observe the palm gardens, earthen villages and relationship between mountain, river and cultivated land.

After lunch, we continue south toward Jbel Saghro, entering one of Morocco's most austere mountain landscapes.

The road carries us through a world of dark volcanic rock, high plateaus and deeply eroded valleys before descending toward another extraordinary transformation.

Green begins to appear again.

We have reached the Draa Valley.

Date palms, gardens, ksour and earthen villages follow the course of the river, forming a long corridor of human settlement through otherwise arid country.

We follow the valley toward Zagora, where we settle for the night.

Today Morocco has changed before our eyes several times.

We began among dunes. We walked beneath the walls of a gorge. We crossed a desert mountain. And we ended beneath the palms of the Draa.

Today we stay in Zagora and explore the landscapes and communities of the surrounding Draa Valley.

After several days of travelling across mountains, steppes and desert country, this is a day to slow down.

The Draa teaches us another way of understanding southern Morocco.

Here, human settlement follows water.

We explore the palm groves and oasis landscapes surrounding Zagora, walking where possible through gardens, cultivated plots and old settlements. Beneath the canopy of date palms, a second agricultural world appears—fruit trees, vegetables and small fields carefully maintained within the protection of the oasis.

The landscape may look natural from a distance, but much of what we see is the result of generations of human knowledge: irrigation, cultivation, construction and the careful management of limited water.

We also visit some of the ksour and earthen villages of the valley, where architecture responds directly to climate and available materials. Thick earthen walls, shaded passages and compact settlements are not simply picturesque features; they are intelligent responses to heat, scarcity and the environment.

There will be time during the day to meet local people, explore Zagora and experience the everyday rhythm of this southern oasis region without rushing toward the next destination.

This slower day also prepares us for what comes next.

For centuries, the Draa was connected to routes extending southward across the Sahara. Zagora therefore stands not at the end of Morocco, but at the beginning of another geography—one that historically connected North Africa with communities far beyond the desert.

Tomorrow, we follow that direction.

Today we learn how people live with the oasis. Tomorrow, we follow the road toward the open Sahara.

Today we leave Zagora and travel west across one of the most open and dramatic landscapes of our journey.

As the palm groves of the Draa fall behind us, paved roads give way to desert tracks and the settlements become increasingly distant. Ahead lies the vast landscape of Iriki, between the lower Draa country and the Anti-Atlas.

We travel by 4x4 across this immense desert environment, passing through changing surfaces of stone, sand and open plains until we reach the broad basin of Lake Iriki.

For much of the year, Iriki appears not as the conventional lake its name suggests, but as an enormous open lakebed. Standing within it, distance becomes difficult to measure. The mountains retreat toward the horizon and the sky seems to occupy more of the world than the earth beneath us.

Here, silence becomes part of the landscape.

We stop along the crossing to walk, photograph and experience the scale of the country around us. This is not a place to hurry through. The apparent emptiness begins to reveal tracks, vegetation, geology and signs of movement through a landscape that has long been known to pastoral and nomadic communities.

Eventually, the desert track carries us toward Foum Zguid, where we return to the paved road.

After lunch and time to rest, we continue west toward Tata.

Gradually the landscape begins changing again. The Anti-Atlas draws closer, and isolated pockets of green announce the presence of water. By late afternoon, palms gather around us once more as we arrive at the oasis of Tata.

Tonight we settle into our guesthouse after one of the great overland crossings of the journey.

Today there was no monument to reach. The landscape was the monument.

Today we leave Tata and travel west into the Anti-Atlas, following a landscape shaped by mountains, oases and old routes of movement across southern Morocco.

Our first part of the journey takes us through the oasis country around Akka, where palm groves and settlements appear within an otherwise arid landscape.

This region carries memories of much older networks of movement. Southern Morocco was never isolated from the Sahara beyond it. Trade routes connected oasis communities with larger commercial and cultural networks extending across North and West Africa, carrying goods, people, stories and ideas in both directions.

We continue into the Anti-Atlas.

Here the landscape changes once again.

The broad desert spaces of the previous days begin to fold into mountains. Granite formations, narrow valleys, scattered villages and cultivated terraces replace the immense horizons of Iriki and the southern steppes.

Along the way, we stop to explore some of the region's prehistoric rock engravings, traces left by people who inhabited and travelled through these landscapes thousands of years before us.

They are reminders that the Sahara and the mountains we see today have not always looked as they do now. Climate, animals, vegetation and patterns of human life have changed repeatedly across deep time.

The road continues toward Tafraout, surrounded by the extraordinary rock formations and valleys for which this part of the Anti-Atlas is known.

As we approach the town, almond and argan trees begin to appear among the rocks and cultivated pockets of land.

We settle into Tafraout for the evening, surrounded once again by mountains—but mountains very different from those through which our journey began.

Yesterday we crossed a landscape measured by the horizon. Today the mountains gather around us again.

Today we leave Tafraout and travel north through the Anti-Atlas toward the fertile Souss Valley.

The road winds through a landscape of granite mountains, narrow valleys and villages that seem to grow directly from the surrounding rock.

As we travel through the Aït Baha region, we begin to notice another remarkable relationship between people and difficult terrain. Villages occupy slopes and ridges, cultivated terraces appear wherever the land permits, and argan trees survive across country that at first seems too dry to sustain them.

The argan tree is part of an entire rural economy. Its fruit, oil, woodlands and grazing environment have long been connected to household life and agricultural knowledge throughout southwestern Morocco.

We stop along the way for short walks and viewpoints, allowing time to experience the gradual transformation of the landscape.

Then the mountains begin to release us.

Ahead lies the broad Souss Valley.

After the confined valleys and rocky country of the Anti-Atlas, the land opens into a fertile agricultural plain where orchards, farms and villages reveal another Morocco shaped by water, soil and cultivation.

By afternoon we reach Taroudant, enclosed within its distinctive ochre-colored ramparts.

Rather than treating Taroudant simply as another monument stop, we enter the medina and allow ourselves time to walk. Its markets, workshops, neighborhood streets and public squares belong to a city that continues to serve the agricultural communities surrounding it.

There is no need to call Taroudant “Little Marrakech.”

Taroudant has a personality of its own.

We settle into our traditional guesthouse for dinner and overnight.

This morning the mountains held us closely. By evening, the Souss had opened the land again.

Today we leave Taroudant and the Souss Valley and turn north toward the High Atlas Mountains.

Ahead of us rises the great mountain barrier that has accompanied our journey from a distance and now stands directly across our path.

We begin climbing gradually from the agricultural plains into increasingly rugged mountain country. Villages cling to slopes and valleys, cultivated terraces follow the contours of the land, and the road begins to twist upward toward Tizi n'Test, one of the historic passages across the western High Atlas.

The higher we climb, the more clearly we can see what mountains do to geography.

They divide watersheds, influence rainfall, create different environments on either side, and determine where roads, villages and agriculture can exist.

Along the way, we visit Tinmel, a small mountain settlement with an extraordinary place in Moroccan history. Its celebrated mosque is associated with the origins of the Almohad movement, which emerged from these mountains before becoming one of the great powers of medieval North Africa and al-Andalus.

Then we continue across Tizi n'Test.

From the pass, the relationship between the mountains and the country on either side becomes visible. Behind us lie the Souss and the southern landscapes through which we have travelled. Ahead, the valleys descend toward another face of the High Atlas.

We stop along the route for viewpoints and short walks before continuing through the mountains toward Imlil, beneath the great massif of Jbel Toubkal.

By late afternoon, we arrive in a very different mountain world.

After the Sahara, Iriki, the Anti-Atlas and the Souss, we are once again among high peaks, running water, terraced fields and mountain villages.

We settle into our guesthouse in Imlil for dinner and overnight.

The mountains have been on our horizon for days. Today, we cross them.

We wake this morning in Imlil, surrounded by the peaks and valleys of the High Atlas.

There is no reason to hurry away.

After breakfast, we set out on foot with our mountain guide for a morning walk through the surrounding valleys and villages beneath the Toubkal massif.

Walking changes our relationship with the mountains.

From a vehicle, we see slopes, villages and terraces passing through the window. On foot, we begin to notice how paths connect one settlement to another, how water is directed toward cultivated land, how houses respond to the slope, and how every usable piece of ground has been understood through generations of living here.

We return to Imlil for lunch before beginning our descent toward Marrakech.

The road carries us through the mountain valleys toward Asni and Tahnaout. Gradually, the high peaks retreat behind us. Terraces give way to foothills, the valleys broaden, and the great plain of Marrakech begins to open ahead.

Then the city appears.

After so many days travelling through steppes, oases, desert tracks, palm valleys and mountains, Marrakech feels different when approached this way.

We have not flown into it.

We have arrived through the land that surrounds it.

After settling into our accommodation, we enter the medina and make our way toward Jemaa el-Fna, where storytellers, musicians, food stalls, merchants and crowds gather as evening approaches.

The square is not our introduction to Morocco.

By now, Morocco has already introduced itself to us many times.

Tonight, Marrakech is simply another chapter.

We began this journey by leaving the city for the land. Today, the land brings us back to the city.

Today we explore Marrakech, but we begin with the landscape.

After yesterday's descent from the High Atlas, the city's location makes much more sense. Marrakech grew on a great plain beneath the mountains, connected historically to routes leading across the Atlas toward the Souss, the Sahara and lands farther south.

The mountains we crossed yesterday are therefore not simply Marrakech's beautiful backdrop.

They are part of the reason Marrakech is here.

We begin with the Menara Gardens and its great reservoir, where water introduces us to another essential part of the city's story. Marrakech stands in a relatively dry environment, yet generations of hydraulic knowledge brought water from the High Atlas and underground sources to gardens, orchards, households and public fountains.

From there, we enter the historic city through Bab Agnaou and explore some of the monuments that reveal Marrakech's long political and architectural history, including the Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace and the remains of El Badi Palace.

But monuments tell only part of the story.

We continue on foot into the medina, where workshops, markets, neighborhood streets and souks reveal the living city around them.

There is time for lunch and for wandering—not merely shopping, but observing how Marrakech continues to function as a meeting place for people, goods and ideas arriving from different regions of Morocco.

Later in the afternoon, we return toward Jemaa el-Fna.

Yesterday we encountered the square as arriving travelers. Today we have more time to watch it change as evening approaches: food stalls appear, musicians gather, conversations overlap and the public life of Marrakech takes possession of the space.

After nearly two weeks crossing Morocco, something becomes clear.

The mountains, steppes, oases, caravan routes, agricultural valleys and desert landscapes we have travelled through are not separate from the cities.

They helped create them.

Tonight we enjoy our final evening in Marrakech.

During the past two weeks, we have crossed Morocco from its historic cities into the eastern steppes, walked through the oasis of Figuig, watched the Sahara arrive at Merzouga, followed the Draa, crossed the vast landscape of Iriki, travelled through the Anti-Atlas and Souss, and crossed the High Atlas before returning to Marrakech.

Today there is nothing left to discover deliberately.

There is simply the road, conversation, and perhaps a little silence as the landscapes pass the window one final time.
